  • G4NSJ - Noise covering the HF spectrum is worsening. Sadly, the noise on 60 metres, the 5MHz frequencies, is particularly bad at my QTH. I've made this video so you can not only hear the noise but see it on the waterfall display.

    The sources of noise on HF bands could be one or more of the following:
    1- Solar power systems in the neighborhood ( chargers and inverters)
    2- LED street lights
    3- Power line transformers
    4- Switching mode power electronics everywhere, including poor phone chargers.
    5- Over the horizon radars.

      I was out on my 2nd ever ARRL Field Day last weekend and "wisely" brought a solar panel, lead-acid battery, laptop and 400W inverter to keep the laptop topped-up. That last thing was not so wise. The little inverter did lay a local blanket of noise on our affairs, so I ditched it quickly. A head thumping moment as I should have known better.

      The led street light right out front of my house. It messes with 60meter band. It wasn't till they I stalled that light I started having all types of troubles. It's bad enough that the power lines or in bad shape around me,now the led street light is bad on noise.
      I've had to go around my house and check and switch out so many power supplies,and light bulbs even?? It's just crazy now of days,I'm pulling my hair out. I'm almost ready to move to the sticks to get away from all this nosie. But I know it would just fallow me anyway now a days.
      Sorry about the rant.love The channel 👍.

    I bought a car battery charger from Amazon only to find it puts out more RF than most of my QRP radios! It wipes out huge chunks of the HF spectrum even at a fair distance. It's shocking to see the amount of untested and often dangerous rubbish that is allowed to be sold on that site and others.

    We had a power cut the other day in my area & the bands were as clear as they once were years ago! on the subject of cheap power supplies, i can remember the dodgy 12v power supplies that used to power CB radios back in the 70's/80s that could give you a lethal shock on some types!
    at least they were not noisy, best regards.

    If you called Ofcom to investigate this, they would say it's perfectly acceptable and leave, they are not fit for purpose and should be held accountable. Trust me I know having had them come out on several occasions and do nothing to stop it. Leave you high and dry and frustrated to say the least. I have done everything I possibly can to combat the noise here at my QTH this is unacceptable, but unfortunately the so-called Regulators will not do anything about it, that's the Problem!!

    I live out in the country here in the US. My normal noise floor is S2. Last year we had a insulator on a power pole about 3 miles down the road go bad. I ended up having to call and file a complaint with the FCC. My power company finally fixed it, but for 10 months I had a solid S6 of a raspy electric shaver noise on most of the bands. I came real close to just unhooking everything and getting out of shortwave listening after 40 years. The 2 things that saved my SWLing were the MFJ 1026, and my DXE-RF-PRO-1B magnetic loop. Both of those let me completly remove the interference. I have a demo of the 1026 on my channel if your interested. Now that the noise is gone, I can use the 1026 and the loop to optimioze signals. But if the interference ever comes back, (and I'm sure it will someday) I hope those 2 things will help again.

    Plasma TV, unfiltered SMPS, etc take your pick. I've got an intercom system where I live and was getting lots of noise from it's SMPS. Thankfully, Ofcom were able to help me. I put loads of clip on ferrites of type 31 material on it's power leads. This reduced the noise considerably on 60m.

    Good morning Ray great video Sir, I have had similar interference too that "moves" on 160 , 80m & 40m, I found it was a pair of CTEK trickle chargers rated at 0.8A (Designed in Sweden BUT made in "China" plus they could be fakes too haha) as the charge cycle / rate decreases (as the battery charges) the interference frequency moves on the bands, plus my neighbour has one too ouch....... as you say there is limited or no RFI filtering in todays in appliances, bring back the British Standards Institute, back in the day I worked for a battery charger & power supply company, where filtering was paramount supplying products to Burndept, Storno, Racal, The Home Office, Thorn Erricsson, Telephone Rentals, Rank Pullin, GPO, Dowty, & NCB to name a few .......... (all linear products of course) we dabbled with the switch mode side of things PSUs & BCs the RF they produced was a big problem .....Cheers Marcus M7WMK (Ex Stoneleigh Electronics design draftsman 1980s)

    Good to see you back with another video Ray.
    I’m not a HAM but use 11m/CB and listen to a lot of SW… I had a problem a few months ago with a pulsating noise that covered 27 MHz right down to 18 MHz.
    There is a very knowledgeable old radio operator guy lives across from me so I asked his advice. He said if it’s local I could track it down with a portable SW receiver and directional antenna. I thought it was something like OTHR with the problems in Eastern Europe but he was right. After a few hours I ended up at a flashing Chicken and Pizza takeaway sign on the high street. The flashing was in time with the pulsating noise.
    It disappeared on the Sunday morning when the takeaway closed and didn’t appear again when it opened back up that night. Not sure if there was a faulty bulb or something that got replaced but thankfully the noise has not returned.
    Keep the interesting videos coming 🙂

These Plasma TVs are one of my main issues for 75 meters. Then on 40 I have some raspy signal every 50 Khz on starting at 7.00 MHz. Raspy buzz. Id like to try a receive magnetic loop to see if I can null out some of it. We will see.

    I'm new to this SDR/waterfall malarky. I found the 'donated' laptop RADIATED 8kHz steps; touching the built-in mouse pad produced unstable harmonics, an external mouse helped. The PSU shoves out hash, so the laptop is only effective on batteries; BT powerline adaptors are a hideous source of repetitive noise, and broadband noise from overhead telephone cables which are obviously out of balance (not my line with the ring wire mod) beween frequencies of 8.5 - 12 MHz. An ATU helped some of the worst laptop harmonics, the worst around 155kHz. Adding additional ferrite clamps has not helped at. all. In fact without an aerial the SDR box is electrically quiet and relatively noise free. I'm currently building a DC filter to place in line between the laptop and PSU brick with preserving the earthing.
    I also suspect the LED street lighting and other people's computer equipment nearby, judging by the local wifi neighbourhood.
    Further afield, I suspect there is jamming from military sources in the Aeronautical mobile segments of the 60M band and there's suspect wideband interference on 11m too that sounds like the 'Woodpecker' over the horizon radar.

    • @g4nsj

    You have my sympathy. My main interest these days is the Dutch, Balkan and Greek pirate stations above the mediumwave band. Optimum reception from the Netherlands is the exact opposite direction of the interference that's coming from my neighbours house. Not great when you use a loop. Around 1660 khz is the worst.

    Noise has become a terrible blight for many of us. However I seem to have had a lot of success recently with reducing the issue. In my case a vertical antenna away from the house as much as possible as well as common mode chokes on the feeder, the mains supply, the phone line and the satellite downleads has helped to reduce the 10dB over S9 noise on 40m to about S3.
    (I know you said you removed the mains from the equation). With phonelines carrying VDSL common mode chokes can help a lot.
    FWIW a web resource using TDoA is fantastic for locating some sources. Prior to te recent troubles it was interesting to see various noises on 40m locate to Russian military sites, they have been denying it for all of my lifetime but it is so easy to locate them now. I used a web TDoA to locate a random broadcaster just to see how good it was, the "hotspot" highlighted the correct field.
    I cannot remember the website, but a search for KIWI SDR TDoA ought to find it...

      @@g4nsj thank you Ray, your videos always provoke a response. Noise can easily pretty well destroy the hobby. Quite a few people have had remarkable success with loops on the ground for receive, might be worth playing with. I guess many of us regard our aerials as being reciprocal, a good transmit aerial might not produce a good signal to noise ratio on receive. Most of our HF rigs have tons of sensitivity so an inefficient aerial might be fine. One of my rigs has a sub receiver, so you can listen "in stereo" using two antennas, It is suprising at times to hear signals pan across as the low wire wins over the high dipole or vice versa.

    Sadly for unknown reasons there are various transmission towers on the planet that deliberately transmit noise across the bands to prevent radio communications , it's just yet another problem of recent times , the noise transmissions are synthesized to emulate a similar sound of basic local environmental interference , the interference transmissions are essentially a camouflage unlike the woodpecker , on occasions there are noise transmissions that are received all over the world , these are tower transmitters that are transmitting millions of watts , perhaps from Russia or possibly China ?.

    • @julianrobertson3303

      Indeed there are jamming stations out there , I've read that there's various military reasons for signal jamming , I'm not all together sure as to why ? , there's also other factors such as cosmic RF from space , I know a few years back there was a global noise on the 11 meter band , it's difficult to pin down the causes due to the global technology factor . Half the battle is to find a remote & high location to obtain a true noise factor , far from the suburbs , sadly we're living on a planet that's full of signal noise , a far cry from the 1950's .

    Try MFJ-1026 Noise canceller, it worked for me, this device opposes the signal from your main antenna and the signal in antiphase from the second so called noise antenna, which is placed closer to the noise source, and as a result the noise disappears, you just have to manually adjust the intensity of the signals from each antenna and the phase angle

      Hi Fred, nice to hear from you. My noise is all below about 8MHz. Upwards from there is pretty much noise free. Some people locally are experiencing noise on 2 and 4 metres. I don’t know what’s going on! Cheers, Ray.

    This is actualy one reason i haw not converted everything into LEDs in my home yet, i actualy still had to use fluorescent lamps in my kitchen for this reason, i know there are better LED dreivers which don't, but i for me it's realy not worth the effort for the little i use that light as long as the old armatures still works.

    Hi Ray,yes ok, well i have a 7300 with a scope on, and on 4 meters i get a whole row of spikes, therefore when i listen on there i get noise on every other channel, on 2 and 70 i dimdnt have any trouble, but just recently on 20m upwards i get what looks like mushrooms on there, i do have a 3 element yagi, could be deliberate qrm from Russia...i sometimes hear the reminence of the woodpecker...we have a thing nearby called Kelvedon Hatch secret nuclear bunker, and they have an sdr system there, the vhf/uhf is ok but the hf to me sounds terrible..so maybe its not local to me...Fred

      @g4nsj  Рік тому

      Hi Fred, you could be right about deliberate qrm from Russia. Anything is possible these days! OK on Kelvedon Hatch, I've heard of that. I wonder what they get up to. Great to hear from you, as always. Cheers, Ray.

  • @G1XOW
    @G1XOW 9 місяців тому +1

    That group of QRM is almost certainly coming from one source, likely an unstable switched-mode power supply or mains inverter/charger.. Get yourself a QRM eliminator and take some time to learn to use it properly....it is an acquired skill. The noise pick-up antenna only needs to be 10 feet of wire in the room/roof space, but ideally somewhere where it will get the QRM signal better than the real DX stations (ideally not a good DX antenna at all). It needs some practice to use it well but with time you'll be able to null out almost any single-point QRM.

    • @g4nsj
      @g4nsj  9 місяців тому

      Hi Steve, you're right. I've now tracked it down to a switched mode supply. I might look into getting a QRM eliminator for future use. Cheers for now, Ray.

    I quite often listen to Volmet frequencies to gauge condx on 60m. Can't say I have heard that around 5.45MHz. My QTH is west central Scotland. Also, if that noise was causing significant interference to aircraft reception of Volmet, assume that Ofcom would have been onto it ages ago? Therefore, suspect it is local. Wonder what kind of antenna you used when you tried to locate it?
    As per other comments, it is a losing battle. We are drowning in a quagimire of RFI. As you say, only affects a minority, and I suspect our rights were eroded when we stopped paying a license fee. Therefore, suspect absolutely nothing will be done.

    • @g4nsj
      @g4nsj  2 роки тому

      When I tried to locate the noise, I had a portable radio with a ferrite rod on 80 metres. It was a great little radio. It used the ferrite rod up to about 4MHz. Cheers, Ray.

    • @Steve-GM0HUU
      @Steve-GM0HUU 2 роки тому

      @@g4nsj You would think the ferrite rod would give you some idea of the direction (or directions 180° apart). If you could only get one those 80m fox hunt receivers that worked on 60m this might help? Perhaps you could mod an 80m set to work 60m?

    Wall warts, plasma tvs, LED lights, create static for radio frequency. Also power transformers on telephone poles could also do it too. Power wires with cracks that get moisture in it can do it. Time to move out to the country!

    Ive got noise coming from the power supply in my PC's ( have to turn them off when on HF ) as well as from my 60 inch plasma tv as well as the inferior switching power supplies and cfl light bulbs . Its disgusting just like the LED Headlights on cars so bright they blind you at night and its all said to be in the name of progress...humbug...disgusting as you say and I have to say the more technology moves forward the more problems it creates. Oh yes then there is power line noise due to how it is generated these days and the noise from the tv cable companies lines overhead and their digital amplifiers..
