Awesome tour!
Woah!... and I thought I was a hoarder!..
An excellent tour of your radio room setup (and the antennas of course..), thank You Ray. You certainly have got some equipment there, it's a wonder your better half tolerates to share the room with such collection of radios, cables, power supplies etc. She must be a VERY understanding lady!
Always a pleasure to see your videos Ray, thank You!
73's from VK2 land..
Thanks, Arthur. It's nice to hear from you. I have a very tolerant wife! Cheers, Ray.

Great video, a pleasure to watch!
Thanks, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
Thanks for sharing. Old stories are never boring! Now we need to see some old photos of Ray when he was a young pirater, oh, I mean when he was aware of his friends doing that :)
Haha, a young pirate! I really wish I had some old pics.
Thanks for showing us your shack. I haven't seen anything from you for a while and it is always interesting to see what you are up to.
Thanks, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
Brilliant stuff Ray, no, not boring at all, didn't talk long enough! I subscribed to your channel way back because I like vintage radio, to be honest, when you went round your radio room, you lost me within a sentence! but I still found it fascinating, your enthusiasm is just wonderful, by the way I too was born in '51, and have fond memories of all the pirates, Radio North Sea, Radio 270, Radio Geronimo... as well as the better known...anyway, I'm rambling too haha, anyway mate, I look forward to all your videos... a nice distraction in these dark days, look after yourself, best regards, Dave
Thanks Dave it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
Very nice and informative video. Thank you
Thanks!
Thanks for the tour of the shack and antennas! 73, bill
Thanks Bill, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
What a dream radio room, absolutely swap you yours with mine. I have a Tecsun S2000 receiver for HF and a random wire antenna. I also listen to the air band and the marine band with my Uniden Bearcat BCT 15 X which is attached to a discone on a 30 foot pole. I also live near an airfield here in Lydd, Kent. The Coastguard station is a whisker away from my house based at the airport. I can hear the Helicopter running up ready to go. I hear the comms (Polycon) as far as Eastbourne which unfortunately is where the Rescue helicopter is a lot of the time. I am in a unique location where I live, I hear all of the marine band in the channel and all what goes on in the Dover docks, and count myself really lucky. I still get a thrill when the Search and Rescue helicopter returns from a rescue mission and thunders over my house on it's way home to the airport. Myself and my wife spent a whole day a couple of years ago listening to the Coastguard helicopter rescuing the crew from a ship in the channel after it was hit by a huge barge carrying a cargo of boulders. This was in a fierce storm. The helicopter rescued most of the crew and took them to Dover docks. A skeleton crew was left on board. The damaged ship was towed to France by the French navy Tug Abeille Languedoc based in Boulogne. Very interesting hobby we have. I am in the throws of getting to grips with Software Defined Radio, on it goes. Thanks Ray for another interesting video.
Love the Marconi CR100 receiver. Thanks for the tour Ray. Ian. G0YAP in Diss
Thanks Ian, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
Hi Ray, love the radio room there and all the awesome aerials. A DX'ers paradise!!! I thought I had radios, but my collection is tiny compared to yours. Well done and thanks for sharing the excellent radio room tour. I also have a Kenwood receiver, though it is actually an AM-FM Stereo tuner, which I purchased second hand several years ago. I actually heard 648kHz Radio Caroline via an Internet remote SDR located in West London UK back in 2018. My coax comes through the floor behind my desk and I have had to colour code the ends to work out what goes to what. All my gear is also old. I still use analogue TV receivers connected to STB's. Most of my radios are either second hand or very old, though I don't have any valve gear these days. Anyway, wishing you the very best. Robert.
Thanks, it's nice to hear from you. All very interesting stuff. I'be labelled my coax. Cheers, Ray.
I am also operating a Kenwood TS 570D. It's 20 years old but I'm quite pleased with it. I'm just getting back on the air after being off for quite a few years. 73, jim, WA7VVV
Thanks Jim, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
Nice ham shack and good equipment for sure!
Thanks, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
Hey Ray. thanks for he shack tour.

Nice set up 👍
Great video Ray! Stay safe and keep well. 73, G1DRP
Thanks, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
Wow very interesting radio room Ray i have a spare room which is my shack i have to ban my wife from coming in with her feather duster like Hilda humming and singing tunes that have no known lyrics as hilda use to do on the tv those were the days hahahaha anyway stop waffling John great to see you well and fighting fit looking forward to the next episode of The Radio Workshop 73 take care and stay safe all of you God bless 2E0XGX.
Thanks John, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
Nice one Ray..👍
Thanks Ray, nice radio room lots to keep you busy I'll listen for you on the low end of 80 meters. w4rem
OK, I hope to hear you!
Very interesting Ray, thanks for showing us around, like the Marconi Rcvr, due to living on the ground floor of an 8 storey block and surrounded by other tall buildings the QTH iwas getting increasingly difficult to operate at so I took the decision to sell all my gear, just kept a couple of handhelds which i've hung on to, I was having to rely on indoor antennas which in 1993 when I first got my licence did the job ok, but as the years have rolled on lots of new buildings have been built around me, so best 73's thanks for the video Mike QTHR G7POG & M3MHM
Thanks, Mike. It's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
Good video Ray, thanks for the tour. I'm not a ham but I do have a good receiver and I listen to 80 meters a lot from here in central Illinois. Take care and stay well...
Thanks Gary, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
Thanks for the shack tour Ray, a very nice layout indeed with the CR100 there on a sturdy table. I still have my old CR100, serial nr 271676 from when I was an SWL back in the 70s, it was given to me by a G8 Ham friend Martin Betts, who completely renovated it. At present I have a Wellbrook loop and AOR receiver, set up for listening to sferics on VLF, between 10KHz and 30KHz, hearing the clicks is most fascinating. It's lightning natural radio so to speak. Keep up the good work! 73 Matt
Thanks Matt. Sounds like you have a nice set up. It's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
@@g4nsj Cheers Ray!
Nice shack. I really like the looks of that Marconi!! de K4TEN
Nice setup !
Alinco DX70 one of the best under rated radios ever absolutely bombproof and always sound good to they should of never stopped making those
People said the noise blanker did not work well it dose if you turn the ACG to fast and then switch it on !
Great Videos Ray I found your web page years ago looking for some radio frequencies you had listed on it. Keep the videos coming makes my 12 weeks of isolation / Quarantine go by 👍
73 M0SRW Sam
Hi Sam, it's nice to hear from you. Glad you like the videos. The Alinco is an amazing little transceiver,. I'm really pleased with it. I use it for CW on 6 metres, brilliant! Cheers, Ray.
Radio Workshop I’ve had a DX70 since 1997 I don’t use 6m often But for HF mobile from all over Europe in my truck I can’t fault them no silly mind bending menus 100% a great mobile set 👍
Great video.
Marc D thanks! Cheers, Ray.
Very nice setup
Thanks!
That was the first time I've herd 4 meters, as we are not permitted to use it here in the states. Thank you!
we dont get it here in australia either
We ID at least once every 15 mins, as per the rules. Well, we try to!
I built a MW 40 inch loop aerial, and used it to receive Radio Wales. The teabaformatio to the weak signal was immense. With my QTH being in Derby, Radio Wales sounded like an FM broadcast. The Internet has remove the need for the old loop aerial.
Sorry about the error (transformation)
That Marconi is lovely
Hello Ray. Just found your channel and subscribed.. I'm working on a broadcast valve radio atm which is how I found your channel.. 73's OM
...And what do my wondering first behold but the radio I grew up with: The British Admiralty Marconi B28! I spent several years trying to find info on this animal so I could pull mine off the shelf and give it a proper restoration, and finally found it online a couple of weeks back. Now up one pops right before me!
Bill Martin Hi Bill, nice to hear from you. Happy restoring, it’s a lovely receiver.
How are you sir?
I'd like to know from you, what is the correct way to check volts(when power is on) in the germanium transistor radio by digital multimeter? If the body is positive of the radio,
should I clip negative prod directly to the negative supply of the adaptor/battery? And check the volts of various components/transistors,by using the positive prod.?actually I'm working on a telefunken radio. No signal on the base of transistor on 2nd ift stage.
wow that Marconi looks great
You are my hero. Congratulations?
73 de Patrick, K5OAR
Thanks, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
I loved mine too but they were a bit of a brute, just after that absolutely mint BC 348 came into the surplus market. You could take the rotary converter out and it left a perfect place to build a power supply. I loved that receiver.
John L a brute, indeed!
Nice radio room! Mine is confined to a rucksack at the moment
nice shack. Just got back into the hobby now I'm retired to Wimborne and using the small bedroom as my shack. 73 de John G1HOK
Thanks John, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
Hi Ray just found your vid and went straight down nostalgia street. Back in the day we started out on the naughty side bands but decided it was getting a bit hot so went and sat the exam me G6YAU and the Mrs G1EAM but we missed the DX so I did the Morse and became G0JDU . A couple of years ago we moved down to Smallfield with a big garden and I am getting tempted to get set up again. If you want that extra room get the Mrs licenced Ha Ha
Haha! I don't think she's go for that!
ZL3JMC John Living in New Zealand.. Nice to see you on I think you are in the UK, looking to come back to UK and hit the canals for a few years, I will be bringing my Yeasu FT900 and my two meter Kenwood.. but will get myself a CB for the Canals. I cannot see me getting of soon with the Corona issue, Kaiora, I might need some none conspicuous antennas for canal boat. cheers for now John. (Old call sign 41 AT174
Thanks John, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
“can I make a small hole in the ceiling ?” ... your spouse is a good person !
John Peterson indeed she is!
Nice, thank you.
I saw this old style antenna and understand that I mustwatch the video
Excellent!
hi,good video,interesting content,thanks.
Great radio room Ray.Guess what....I've got the Longwave loop now! Tell you more when we catch up on GB3WO.73.G7HFS
Talk soon, Ian. Cheers for now.
I have the same 4 meter radio Ray . It works quite well. They dont have the best rep for reliability so i guess we have been lucky so far lol. Nice shat u have there.
Gary g1fsh they are great radios for the price. Take care and all the best, Ray.
Love the set up . I am as bad with my cb radio gear . I also have a old Bush valve radio and several short wave receivers. Reg 29vlf21 Dublin ireland
Thanks, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
I used to have the microwave modules RTTY decoder around 88 had it hooked up to an hf realistic dx302 mainly used to pick up stuff from TASS . Used to have a trio ham band hf RX too nice bit of old kit . I got my G7BTH callsign around 88 .lapsed a long while now though . Did some APRS around early 2000s and packet . Managed to transmit via ISS using a trio THR7 APRS handy .
I remember letraset can you still get it .
Paul Fiero thanks, Paul. Nice to hear from you. Yes, I think you can still get letraset. Cheers, Ray.
Hi Ray. Always find your channel very enjoyable. Thanks for releasing your videos. You mentioned some frequencies to listen to. Would you be able to leave a list of those frequencies? In your next video you could film you going through and listening to those other frequencies. Anyway, we are based in Horsham but not to open up GB3WO but GB3IW no problem. Cheers
Thanks, it's nice to hear from you. Yes, I'll list some frequencies on the web site. Cheers, Ray. www.radio-workshop.co.uk/g4nsj-amateur-radio/
5:45 Can I ask you more about the beacon interface, please? I know there's a banddplan for 10m, but how do pick the frequency for the beacon to operate on? How I do the same thing with my full licence or do I need a NoV?
You will need to contact the RSGB and they will pass it on to Ofcom. You will need a NOV. Choose a frequency somewhere in the beacon section of the band. Cheers, Ray.
Would love to know if a high up mounted arial would improve my intaride 4 watt? Pmr set and what's best size wise.Fasinating video. Thanks
Yes, it probably would.
Ray, I'm sure you've checked but those two black power supplies on the left (EP-925 ?) were sold under various names and some don't have any over-voltage protection. Certianly the Maplin version I have doesn't. Cheers!
EssArrB yes, you’re right. I must build a protection circuit for each of them. Thanks for commenting. Cheers, Ray.
Recognized the CR100 as soon as I saw it, I was 17 years old my call G3NEM and lived in Liverpool. The CR100 had just come on the surplus market, I could not afford the AR88 and it was about 1958. I emigrated to Canada in 1966 I am not active now but still have my call. John VE7BAN
John L Hi John, nice to hear from you. I use my CR100 every day. Love it! Cheers, Ray.
You are definitely not boring.73
john forte thanks!
A well set out radio room .
Im located 180 feet up in a Tower Block in Bletchley but only use 2m & 70cms FM only
G6XEG Marc in Bletchley
I went to Bletchley Park last year. Amazing!
Hi, do you share the same antenna with all? Is there an RF switch needed?
There are a few RF coax switches.
Hi Ray. I would like to put a zs6bkw dipole on the chimney with both legs down the sides of the house. Do you think this would work for HF? Don't have much garden space . Great vids, thanks
Wow, it's certainly worth a try!
TS 570D, I've one myself. Nice radio, quite portable - I often use it when I travel up and down to the cabin on weekends. Catch you on the CQWPX this weekend? :-)
CQWPX... I'll take a listen. Cheers, Ray.
I’d like to hear the “waffle” Ray, and you wouldn’t be boring us, honestly. Maybe do another video, of “when I was a boy” or how You got interested in radio, or what radio was like “back then”. I find this kind of thing very interesting.
OK, I';ll do one about my boyhood. That should be fun! Cheers, Ray.
I second this too - be interesting to know about what were on the bands from the bygone era. I can only go back as far as the mid 90's when even then it was chocca on HF to UHF :)
@@Scotscan OK, I'll do it!
I’m sure you have stories to tell about touching live wires, blowing things up, or your “friend” annoying the neighbours with spurious rf emissions, all in the name of education of course. I remember building an electric shock machine and having fun with it at school, only to have it confiscated by a teacher muttering something about “lethal contraptions”.
ctho admin yes, the electric shock machine! They were amazing, I had some great fun with one!
Glad you're OK, really like the doublet video ("you can tune a bucket of water"). Ever tried a horiz. loop with balanced line?
Yes, I have tried a loop but I don't have a great deal of space here so it wasn't too good.
Hello Ray, would be interested in you're earthing system for the radios as you appear to have a 1st floor radio room. Best wishes Adrian M0NOD.
Hi Adrian, basically I have a copper pipe running from the window down to an extensive earth system in the garden.
SEM Transmatch. Used to have one of them. Wish I still had it! G4XCQ.
They are amazing!
Great shack ray.
Andy M0UKN
might be a silly question
However, isn't there just 1 radio, available at a reasonable price,
that can cover all or most of the frequency bands?
There are radio which cover several bands but I prefer separate radios. That way, I can listen on more than one band at the same time.
Nice radio room
Thanks!
Great video. If someone is younger than 30 they probably hear your 10 meter beacon through the camera microphone haha
Ok soy de Argentina Lu7dhr que Estación congratuleccion
I'm just getting GB3NSJ here in Brighton Ray, 5/8 wave CB vertical into in IC-7300. It's pretty weak with me.
Tony Ling thanks, Tony!
Around The World, I hope that I can hear You on HF Band. Very nice, quite not noisy and many things Room.
Thanks, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
Thanks Ray for the look at your "shack" I am not married so my "shack" is in my bedroom. I don't have that much equipment because I just don't have the room. Like you I got an old dinning room table under the window and my coaxes go through the window via a MFJ-4601. I have a question the S.E.M. TranZmatch has Isle of Man on it. Was it made on the Isle of Man? I did not know they had much manufacturing facilities there. Back in the 70s wasn't Radio Caroline a Pirate radio station? I wish we had 4 meters here in the US but we don't. The only vertical antenna I have is a Sirio 1/2 wave base loaded for 10 meters the rest of my antennas are home brew wire antenna. I just finished a 30 meter Inverted Vee and its working great. Nice looking Shack Ray. 73 Joe KN4IFI
Yes, it was made in the Isle of Man and Caroline was a pirate station. Iit's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
Those solar panels on the house opposite wow, could power your shack on them
Paul Fiero yes, I wish they were mine!
I was going to go for my Technician license (U.S), but honestly I never hear anyone ever on my I-COM. However, I do hear pirate CB operators with directional antenna's obviously broadcasting waay over 4 watts.
Excellent!
Thanks Ray did you ever go out to Radio Caroline
No, I never made it. It's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
in the 20s the word DEN was used later on it became SHACK .. JEFF.. M0PRF.
Interesting, thanks.
Thanks for the tour Ray, nothing wrong with older *fit for purpose* equipment... not everyone needs to aspire for the latest and greatest to enjoy radio 👍
+1 for the "waffle" always enjoy the nostalgia content 😊
Thanks, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
@@g4nsj Likewise 👍
Thank you for sharing! 73 de KB2SDR
jason matonis thanks! Cheers, Ray.
that is one cool room. I am working on my radio room. I really need someone to come over and help me set up the antennas, I am over my head.
Keep at it!
Nice QTH Ray. Love the Marconi. Made in Canada? Stay healthy.
Thanks, it's nice to hear from you. Cheers, Ray.
The Marconi is Brilliant
Very Impressive - so what is it that you listen to and in particular talk about with other radio folks ?
Orion Karl Daley we chat about radio related topics. Aerials, transmitters, receivers...
@@g4nsj thanks for your reply - I remember talking skip during the CB days -
