I remember when my BF had first baby. We were holding our breath when doctor started with "I am so sorry, but your baby appears to be ...deaf" Wheww! We were all so relieved nothing was wrong with her.

Yeah. The first test your child has passed in her lifetime. My child was born Deaf and I had nurses apologising that our baby is Deaf. I’m Deaf myself and my partner is not, we went… huh? Why so sad? We are happy she’s Deaf (as we would if she was hearing). Just bugging me how people react to their perception of what’s good news and bad news.

Hi Cheyenna, I found out my son had Down Syndrome in my 1st trimester. I was so distraught and didn't know what to do. I read so many books, networked with other parents of children with DS, and had a lot of support from the ministers at my church. Few days after my son was born, we also found out he failed his hearing tests but this time I wasn't sad at all. I had Deaf friends in college and I learned sign language because of them, so I felt so prepared to sign with my son. Deaf Awareness helped me with that. Unfortunately, I had little awareness of the Down Syndrome community, which is why my reaction was completely different. Bringing awareness to others will help our society move toward positive change in our mindset and allow accessibility for all people with different abilities.

While I totally agree that the nurse shouldn’t have said it like that, I get where she’s coming from. Of course there’s nothing wrong with being deaf but it makes living in our society harder

That's such a wild thing to say to anyone. Beyond "these are the results and here are some resources" (which I would need regardless of whether my kid is hearing or deaf), I don't know why they would feel the need to comment.

That’s what they say to every parent. Most parents will be happy to hear that there child doesn’t have any form of disability and that they are healthy and happy.

@@FableM Being deaf you are literally missing (or are severely lacking in) your ability to hear, one of the 5 senses. It might not be nearly as debilitating as other disabilities,, and actually has some positives, but it by very definition is one.

OP, I think you may have missed the point of Chyenna’s video. It was inappropriate for the nurse to give their opinion when delivering the news of the hearing test. It’s enough to say her baby passed. Adding the ‘congrats’ and ‘you must be relieved’ bit is unnecessary. It’s like when a doctor or nurse tells you you are pregnant-that’s not good news for some people (deeply distressing, in fact). It shouldn’t come with a congratulations when delivering the news. Just give people straight up facts instead of making assumptions about how they must feel (in any medical situation).

U could tell nurse or Dr if ur daughter is hearing and u still will teach ur daughter deaf cultures with sign language to be aware of deaf world and it obviously nurse is happy that ur daughter are hearing not deaf so if I were u I would file complaint against nurse and if I have baby and they say need do hearing test I will say hell no and take baby with me to get out of hospital
