Learn more about the music:
Praveen Sheolikar was born into a family of reputed violinists from Raipur, and trained under his grandfather Rambhau Sheolikar and father V.R. Sheolikar. He quickly mastered the techniques and ideas of his family, and has since pushed to develop his own approach to gayaki ang [singing style]. He balanced burgeoning acclaim as a young soloist with academic studies, gaining a first class Masters degree in Science. He now plays full-time, touring to acclaim and bringing his distinctive style to audiences home and abroad.
Gorakh Kalyan is a spacious raga of the early night hours. It takes its name and structure from regional folk tunes of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh - in fact its modern form appears to have no distinctive traces of Kalyan at all, leading some musicians to refer to it simply as Gorakh. It ascends with only four core notes [SRmDS], and descends with only five [SnDmRS], although ornamental touches of Pa can be included in either direction for added colour. Sa and Ma are the vadi-samvadi [king and queen notes], and komal Ni in mandra saptak [low octave] is a key resting note. Musicians often utilise the high degree of melodic space with heavy ornaments, balancing its folksy character with intricate detail. It lends itself particularly well to instrumental renditions.
Recorded at Darbar Festival on 22 Sep 2018, at London’s Southbank Centre:
-Praveen Sheolikar (violin)
-Vinod Lele (tabla)

We'd like to upload everything for free - but filming, editing, and hosting cost money, and we’re a small not-for-profit organisation. Signing up to the Darbar Player costs about the same as a couple of coffees a month ($5), which we hope is an excellent price for such a wealth of unique music.
Beautiful rendition. Thanks for this precious upload!
This performance has a different beauty. Very different from other performances at Darbar. The more I'm listening to it, the more I'm enjoying.
This style is called gayki style which translates to playing like a singer. Hence more soothing. One of the doyens of the style is dr. N. Rajam
Really hats off to that guy who made this tabla like a mridangam.
It's dhal or kharaj tabla tuned like pakhwaj it's face is bugger and it's also used in jori
Gorakh Kalyan is an extremely soothing raaga and this rendition is awesome. The Tabla accompaniment is also extremely nice. The audio quality... Darbar is the best

The magic of the Dayan tuned accurately to Madhya Shadaj and correctly adjusted Bayan, small Alankars matching the fingering of the Violinist, a very nobel Audava-Shadav Raaga played in slow tempo and expertise of the violinist creates a World you do not want to leave. Thanks for the upload. Please do upload the Aalap and Druta portions if available.

What a synchronization!!! Melody of violin and bass of tabla
Soulful Violin imitating Vocal Style ‘Khayal’ elaboration of Raag is the speciality of Praveen Dada. Always a treat to listen him.
There are not many performances that are as pleasing to watch as to listen to, like this one. Simplicity is gold.
The whole piece is magnificent but 8:40 to 8:45 is just pure magic. Pranam to you sir🙏🙏
This is one of the rare few performances where one would be hard pressed to say if it's better on it's own or with the background.
Rare This type of players. This is fully meditation.
वाह अति सुंदर लाजवाब 🎻♥🎻

stunning performance by Praveen....
Incredible vibrato😮
Wow 😍 precision sound system. Soulful 😘💕
The tabla that is used is called the Dhala . It is used by Suresh Talwalkar ji in most of his accompaniments. Certainly with Pt Kashalkar ji.
Madhya Laya is the most suitable mizaj of this raag in my opinion.
The sound quality is EXTREMELY good. Kudos Darbar
Take my bow sir. awesome.

Why is the Tabla sounding so different from usual? It sounds more like a Mridangam.
It's a larger diameter tabla, and the bigger head and body size brings the pitch closer to that of its ancestral drum, the pakhawaj. Hindustani classical music, and in particular the Dhrupad style of it, is traditionally accompanied with a pakhawaj. However, this piece trends more towards Khayal so it gets a tabla; one that is tuned lower to better fit the tone produced by this violin. The larger tabla's sound gives it a really unique richness and grandiose that is really hard to explain.
😍🥰🎵❤️
