Adonis seems a little desperate to me. He seeks out the listener, approaching them for a deal, then proposes this trade which is lose-lose for the listener and not as great as he makes it sound. If the listener fails, he gets to keep them for himself. But if the listener succeeds and Adonis gets the Trident, and it's as powerful as he claims, then there's nothing to prevent him from forcing the listener to be his anyways. His true goals are a mystery, but he seems to really want the listener for some reason and is willing to trap them into an impossible situation. I'm very curious to see where this goes and why he seems to want the listener so much.
Maybe not desperate, but definitely up to something. As you said, this guy put the listener on an impossible situation, so she is going to lose in any of the cases.
To sum up: this is a trap.
