The song was written in 1920 from what I know, based on a poem about Florian Geyer made in 1880 or something.
Technically not a landsknechts song since this was made in the early 1900’s from earlier poetry. Also it’s from the perspective of peasants which were later defeated by landsknechts. This is a proud peasants song!
It's a song about the 16th century peasant revolt, which Luther was actually vehemently against. He wrote a tract about it that is available in English if you're interested in history. "Against the Murderous, Thieving Hordes of Peasants" is the title.

It is weird that this song was adopted by the NSDAP and not the, you know, actual socialists/communists. If they changed the chorus to _"setzt aufs Klosterdach die Rote Fahn'"_ ("put the red flag upon the monastery roof"), it would have made a perfect companion piece to "Der Heimliche Aufmarsch" (which calls upon the workers to place their Red Banners of Labor on every ramp and every factory).

This is not an "original" Landsknecht song, it's a song that was made much later, but in Landsknecht style.
