I've been to Shaoxing and experienced first hand. I absolutely loved the experience and, as a white Aussie bloke, I was really looked after by the people of Shaoxing.
I'm a Singaporean tourist who visited Shaoxing six months ago. It's truly an underrated gem that's just a short train ride from Hangzhou. Awesome experience! Great to see you enjoying yourself there too. The locals are very friendly.

Traditional houses can only be preserved by commercialization.Even though people are saying that they don't like commercialization, the fact is no young people want to live in old houses and those house will be abondoned finally.
You're right! Commercializing traditional houses helps preserve them, as younger generations are less likely to live in old structures. Without such efforts, these houses may be abandoned over time.

This is an amazing interesting episode Katherine ! So full of of history. Near Santa Monica in LA is a sweet neighborhood called Venice existing as narrow canals with cute homes lining the waterways. They nicknamed it ‘the Venice of the north’, drawing a lot of artists. Not half as interesting as this historic village in China. What a fascinating vast country China is and such beautiful areas like the mountains. I love how friendly the people are. The media don’t show this side of China. BTW, boyfriend ? Thing like iPhones & iPads are so old, I saw an EV complete with some charging station only a few weeks ago! I have not seen any solar panels yet - guess they aren't useable in the underworld. If you should come across one, perhaps you can show us in one of your videos 😅

这些几百年的老村子政府不允许商业化,纳入古村落保护单位,私人重建的话不允许现代化的外观,只能按原样修建,同时地方狭窄成本很高,所以年轻人都搬出去住了!但是地皮很值钱,没有个五十万美金根本买不下来,而且你必须把户籍迁到这个村落!

14:58 深有同感,这些老房子确实是很老旧了,但有很多融合了传统文化颇具审美性的细节元素在里面,我老家的那些还存留的祠堂也是这样。中国在建设新房子的时候,CBD那种现代化的办公楼群不算,住房类的,不论是新式的高层住宅(大部分是土黄色,包括杭州的),或者农村新建的自建房(90年代00年代建的大部分是难看的方块瓷砖房,现在建的大部分是难看的乡村欧),能将这些老房子中具有审美性的细节元素融合进来的并不多见。中国新一代的建筑设计师们要加把劲了。
