As a retired electrician can tell you that ultility companies will never have the generators or distribution network to power up all electric homes. If a home owner that has 2 EV cars would need at least a 300 amp service to handle the 80 to 130 amos needed for electric heat, 35 amps for range 25 amps for dryer, 24 to 40 amps for water heater, 60 to 90 amps for 2 EV chargers and 25 amps for general load ( refrigerator, frezer, TV'S , LED lights etc ). A friend drove his EV car on vacation. Nearest EV charging station was almost 2 miles away. Had to wait over a hour before somebody was finished charging then moving their EV. So he had to leave it then take a cab back to motel. Then pay for another cab to take him to pick up car. He took cabs rest of week to resturants & shopping. Money he saved in gasoline only covered a small portion of cab fares.

Someone needs to create a petition to appeal this bill. Gas powered equipment is better than electric because of the lifespan of battery powered equipment. This will hurt many people, one of my close friends has a lawn care/landscape maintenance business and I feel for him and other lawn care/landscape maintenance businesses big and small. I've never seen an electric chainsaw with a bar bigger than 20", or an electric rototiller, or stump grinder

Kyle, the reality is. We can't have a sustainable and habitable planet by continuing to rely on not only limited, but climate change contributing focal fuels. Especially with maintaining our outdoor spaces. The outdoor equipment manufacturers (Sthil, Husqvarna, Echo, all MTD brands, etc.) will use this opportunity to innovate for more powerful battery equipment with longer battery life.

One or two years ago several California Counties had rebates if you turned in your residential gas powered equipment and bought electric as pilot projects for this plan. There was overwhelming demand for the rebates and the rebate money was exhausted within a few days. Clearly residential folks were turning in old busted up gear worth $0 to get half off on new electric gear. Commercial folks with high end equipment (riding mowers, big gensets, etc.) are going to hang on to them because you can't run them on battery power for 8-24 hours a day.
CARB has been after the little guy for years. They've banned barbecue starter fluid, residential paints with volatile solvents, ethanol for heating and cleaning purposes, methanol in windshield wiper fluid to prevent freezing, the list goes on. It's trivial emissions compared to aircraft, agricultural, industrial, transportation and hydrocarbon mining but those folks have big lobbying operations to protect themselves. Did you know that piston engine aircraft still use leaded gasoline and residential areas below the takeoff patterns are so polluted with lead that children test way above allowable limits? CARB is mute concerning it because, um, it's a "Federal Problem." They're a bunch of bureaucrats targeting the defenseless trivial offenders while letting the big polluters who have lobbies get a pass and then brag abut their accomplishments. Government at its worst.

You're relying on politicians to understand the difference between gas and fuel... think about how poorly they understand f1rearms, and try to decide how much it really matters what they *say* one way or the other. You're trying to find a loophole based on a technicality, but no one is paying attention to things at that level anymore. It will be by some politicians interpretation, which won't land in your favor.
My guess is if it doesn't use electricity to operate, then it falls into this category.

I understand they are expensive and have limited run time but I changed my lawn care setup here in Australia to battery and it’s been brilliant so far. I have 8 9ah 36v batteries that fit my stihl ap system and I do agree that they have less power but they go up against Australian plant growth no problem and they do they job 99% of the time. I do still have a gas/petrol stihl kombi system in my trailer for worst case scenario and a gas leaf blower for heavy jobs. I’m just curious why people are so against them? I do understand there is a cult following of being green but I have asthma and I’m only 28 and the fumes irritate my lungs and it is so much cheaper to run over time.

A rebait really? I bet you that that "rebait" if your lucky is a tenth of what its worth. Then you have to buy a battery operated tool cause lets face how many ppl are going to let you plug into their outlets even if they are accessible. So there is that part of this. Not only is there the crazy high prices of said equipment there is also the batteries. You have to buy multiple batteries for each piece cause you not going to be able to charge on the fly. The batteries themselves are triple what the price is of the tool. Then you have to buy a gang load of charges to charge the batteries at night on your off time who knows how many times it's out to the wherever to switch packs instead of spending time with your loved ones and recuperating. If that isn't enough your electric bill is going to skyrocket charging all these batteries cause convicted felon PG&E sure as hell is not giving you free power or even a discount for that matter. Oh yeah one other thing don't forget that during summer months 5pm to 8pm power is double price and what if your caught in one of those rolling power cut offs. Thank you governor d!@#$%^&g (who buy the way got a 250,000 dollar kickback from PG&E) go figure.

The real funny thing is California gets most of their energy from Arizona and Utah and those two states get most of their energy from burning coal so I'm not really sure what the point of this law is...

Thanks for sharing the information on California but i think the OPE business will still be in great shape just like my son Jake's '67 Mustang. Equipment that is maintained will always be around and need service or repair. I also think that the production of all components including the batteries for this green equipment cause as much pollution, The OLD MAN over and out.

You are very right about the production of this equipment. Moral of the story, maintain your equipment…? Thanks for sharing Old Man!

Trees and plants grow because of carbon dioxide. Electric chainsaws will also be powered in part with fossil fuels for many decades, until wind and solar have blanketed the countryside and new nuclear plants have been built.

Anybody paying attention to the wild fires in the West this summer? The realty is climate change is real with real consequences. This is but one necessary step of many to combat climate change. Good for California and I hope other states will follow their lead.

Do you know where you get plastics from. Do you know where you get lithium from to produce the batteries for these devices you use everyday. From mining and drilling.

Heres another gift for this world. Solar powered lawn mowers make sense. Autonomous/robotic lawn mowers can just stay outside soaking up the sun charging the batteries and start and stop mowing as the batteries are charged and used. I don't want to give everything away. I just don't have any money/resources.
