- Vivica Genaux sings the aria "Agitata da due Venti" from Griselda, opera from Vivaldi.
Le Concert Spirituel, Hervé Niquet.
This was a live broadcast on French TV France 3 from Opéra Berlioz in Montpellier, France, for the "17e Victoires de la musique classique", 17th Classical Music Awards on February 8 2010.
All these experts saying poor technique. Hahaha. She has had a great career singing over twenty years. Just because you don't like her, say so. Every singer figures out the way to sing for themselves. Their body, vocal cords etc. She figured out what works for her. Great I say.
The same was said of Bartoli who's technique is unorthodox...it works for her and she learned that technique from her mother and has always sung that way. Her breath support is much higher than the way that the old Italian school teaches...yet she sings things nobody else can.
Her quick vocal transition’s are incredible. She makes something so incredibly difficult seem almost easy. I love her.
Thanks for people who love and still defend classical (and Vivaldi).
The interpretation is breathtaking : powerful and original, watching the live on FR3, it gave me goosebumps.
THis woman is so passionate!!! And this Vivaldi's interpretation is the best ever!
@@ceciliavargaslizarragahave you seen Cecilia Bartoli one? She is the best no doubts, no one is at the level of Cecilia Bartoli
@@fromista_sn2140 stop comparing them !!
Viveca Genaux is an artist of the highest order. I've seen her several times recently in concert in San Francisco and Berkeley, and her voice is even more spectacular in person. Contrary to many comments below, her voice is improving with age. It has an amazing range and sparks with a thousand colors! She is just entering her prime. Brava!
i am not a singer and i don't care how this is supposed to be done technically. But i love the baroque opera and i realize how difficult this must be. I love the way she does it!!! for me, as a member of the audience, it transported me. i am simply mesmerized by this aria and the execution. Bravaaaaa!!!!
👍👍❤
It's the first time I see melismas and vibrato produced with the lips! o.O
I don’t think it’s so much the vibrato she’s having trouble with. It’s firing off 5 16th notes in one bout that’s getting the best of her! 🤣😂 But damned if she didn’t pull it off! If you were just listening and not watching, we’d probably be none the wiser. 😉
Quelle voix étonnante et quelle maîtrise musicale ! Magnifique Vivica Geneaux.
Elle est nulle, ici. Je l'appréciais beaucoup ailleurs.

OMG this killed me
hahahahahahaah
Sounds like a high pitched dog voice barking. This is far from grace. Now I remember why I don't like this period of music.
I don't care what faces she makes. I'm impressed by anyone who can sing this song without coughing up blood.
There are techniques for every kind of music. I don't care if you don't care about her faces. She's not a good singer. STOP.
NEVER
Verdenmord why don't you sing it and we'll see how good you are. I'm thrilled
cecilia bartoli perform this one fare better and without this tricks wich is clearly not the best technics and the easyest to perform this song....

Totally agree.
I got to sing with her and talk with her when she returned to her hometown for an opera concert (we both grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska) It was an absolute honor and she is a delightful person.
Vibrato from the jaw and lips. First time I see that trick...
Thank you!, I'm not the only one that sees this poor technique, somehow she manages to keep on tempo though, she's using a V sound to sing some form of staccato, it's adding tension to the lips and the jaw and I'm not sure how she keeps the foaming saliva in check on both sides of her mouth. The tone changes should made by the Larynx and use vowel migration to do the runs as most other professionals do. Even Simone Kermes a very unconventional singer does not do this. I do like the timbre of her voice, she just needs better technique
me too. thanks i thought i'm just clueless :D
I totally agree! My voice teacher recently used this video as an example of "how to sing incorrectly". xD
Gonanza Bons brilliant!!
she needs to do a master class with Joyce Di Donato and learn how to really do vibrato
Her voice really has a deep sentimental matice, even she is doing great agilities, which delivers a magistral performance of this so dificult aria; wonderful interpretation and wonderful voice all in a beautiful young lady...MARAVILLOSA!!!!
Impressive performance! I still prefer Cecilia Bartoli's technique...
This is one of the repertoire's most difficult arias to sing, and Ms. Genaux goes through it with great intelligence and skill. She doesn't always do these jaw movements, this is just very, very difficult. Brava Vivica!
I've never heard anyone sing coloratura with their lips before....but it seems to work for her.
5:19 Excuse me guys, I just let my chihuahua out for a walk.
I love to see this video before going to sleep :) There's the same concert of Vivica - Agitata realized in Köln. But, in my appreciation this is the best :) Not just the movement of the lips, How she can give life the partiture so preciseley! Bartoli is precious yes, but L'Agitata for a Mezzo sounds stronger. Bartoli, doesn't risk anything in the word "naufragar", Vivica does, she doesn't hesitate in mantaining the sound of deep desperation of the "due venti". I like it a lot. THANKS Wienerfr!!!
Compliments for Vivica Genaux for this extreme difficult aria. This lady is IN FULL CONTROL,both regarding voice and with the orchestra.Bravo! I am deeply impressed. P.S. How can there be 134 negative comments? These voters only pay attention to what they see and NOT to what can be heard. They are clearly outsiders.Pity they can give their negative opinion when it is not right. Why don't they "play" elsewhere and criticize non-classical singers(e.g. Patricia Kaas). Vivica Genaux is a genius.
Funny the way some insignificant people gratuitously attack great artists, but can't bear to be put in their place.Even funnier when they try to play the victim while they're the rude uneducated ones, who've been pathetically trying to spit their venom at great artists out of frustration,or is it jealousy? Let's see if they have accomplished 0.1%of what the artists they attack have in say... 20 years.Thank again Vivica for sharing your gift with us. HeartSong90,grow up,you have so much to learn!
Thank you for your kind post. I was lectured last night on Caffarelli practising before the looking-glass to eradicate 'ugly grimaces'. I still maintain, as you yourself do, that the sound and beauty of the voice are the most important aspects in singing. Based on that criteria, Madame Genaux is magnificent.
She's using her lower lip to rhythmically accentuate the fast notes, especially the notes repeated on one pitch. Bartoli's technique, I agree, is much sounder.
The most wonderful voice and timbre, great agility, and great balance between her chest and head voice. Such a level of mastery anyone with ears should able to hear how comfortable she is in her production. Nevermind her facial movements, they are not tricks or vocal tension, but just a habit/byproduct that frankly should be none of your concern.Anyone who feels clever saying "vavava" i would invite to listen without looking. You are being fooled by your eyes, it's obvious listening to it that there is no consonants thrown into her coloraturas whatsoever. If you can't use your ears, I don't know what business you have commenting on an opera video frankly.
I agree, it is difficult to properly enunciate the lyrics without shaping the lips the way she does. The technique of the coloratura is among the most difficult to master, and she does so quite spectacularly! She gave a performance worthy of Vivaldi himself!
Because it's her technique!! Everyone has its own !!!
Extraordinary skill! The best interpretation I have seen of one of the most difficult aria ever written. Bravo! Is it even better than Sumi Jo's interpretation? I think yes.
I'm glad I don't know as much about music as those who are writing bad reviews. So I can enjoy both Genaux and Bartoli, in the same way I can enjoy a good wine but also a better one.
Exceptionnel. Une prouesse physique et artistique !!!! 🙏🙏🙏
Incredible technique, wonderfull voice, Brilliant performance! Thx for uploading!
Espectacular intrerpretacion. Bravo Vivica, has ganado la medalla de oro.
I wander if all of you who make comments about technique have even attempted to sing this...It is probably one of the hardest things written and surviving it and being able to even sing the notes is an achievement on its own.
And please, Cecilia also looks funny when she sings it and she was not the first one even who sang it..So good job Vivica
Sorry but it’s not participation trophy hour: even amateur opera singers don’t use their lips and jaw like that.
Fantastic, thanks for upload!!
Sensacional! Estupenda! Extraordinária performance ! Viva Genaux!
Check out Veronica Cangemi. It comes pretty close!
Concordo
Assolutamente insuperabile la nostra Cecilia!
She is amazing. Period.
A brilliant voice in an exceptional performance!
Thais IS the most beautyful performance of all times!!!!
fantasticoooooooo ..
Fantastic!
You don't get to hear this kind of voice now adays~! oh wait...we we can~! Amazing....What a great pefrormer, and a brilliant timber. Thanks for the poost.
this woman is adorable!!!
vivica is on fire at this concert...awesome vocal technique....bravo!
Very nice piece and beautyfull performance...
Maravillosa interpretación. Genial. Orquesta y voz. Flores para Vivica Genaux.
Not bad at all... Ok
Still more enjoyable than most that I have heard. While Cecilia Bartoli's rendition is my favorite, this one is so close...
As for the"musical technicians" that know everything, I say to you: WHAT MATTERS IS WHAT WE HEAR AND HOW WE FEEL ABOUT IT. PART (IMPORTANT PART) of quality is in that.
I give you an example: La Callas vs. Renata Tebaldi. Tebaldi would never miss a note, but Callas would. So, wby is Callas above her? Because she understood that Opera is SUNG THEATRE. Not just a concert thing. And how this transposes to Bartoli?... She REALLY knows what the spirit of bel-canto is! THE SOUND OF IT! NOT the notes, not the composer's written redition, but what the WHOLE performance entailed: how it could elevate both the singer and the audience to a higher level of adhesion and unison.
Waoh...terrific performance...bravissima
This is Vivaldi’s 3rd to last Opera. He was in a much more advanced stage of composing by this point. His concerti were noticeably intricate with much more complexity and color than his earlier, typical pieces we all know
Viva Vivica!
this woman is amazing!!!!! comme elle chante! mon dieu!
Does anyone know?
if she is actually improvising, because she is doing different things compared to other sopranos?
was it accustomed to improvise in Vivaldi's time?
mourgoukos She does not improvize, but every singer is free to write what he wants to add technichal difficulties in the 2nd part of the aria. It's tradition !
of course i just HAD to do this in the library. almost got kicked out. it was worth it.
She was phenomenal while singing in İşsanat Concert, İstanbul. I was lucky enough to listen her. ☺️
to eradesso and rayangreene,
I`m behind you a hundred percent : Vivica does a good job here and although her jaw movements are a bit odd, her technique is flawless. Let Heartsong90 say whatever she wants to say she obviously doesn`t know what music is about and calls ``rude`` whoever puts her in her place and then, try to befriend with them when she realizes she`s made a fool of herself. Really sad. I also agree with you : instead of criticizing great artists, she should try to become one.
Bravo to Miss Vivica
bravo !
brilliant! effortless with emotions
Oh come on, people! Nothing new about the comments! Yes! Using the jaw to direct the notes is wrong. Yes! This is probably unhealthy for her voice (though she seems to be doing it for almost 10 years and nothing happened to her voice, yet). But do not let that overshadow her qualities! Hers is probably the cleanest, most articulate and full coloratura we have today! Have you tried to play that at 50% speed? You can spot each note separately and clearly, like a piano. And she is a fine actress.
got to love the faces she pulls ha it is hard to do vibrato as well as pitch changing passages listen to sumi jo sing this haa no ugly faces and perfect pitch with pure vibrato just amazing
I love the scared look of Niquet at @1.48 ! ! ! ! LOL
indeed it is a monster aria... and both Bartoli and Genaux are brave brave artistic souls :)
Love it!!!
Dans la lignée des grandes cantatrices !
Simply Superb!!!!! MERAVIGLIOSA!!!!!!
Fantàstic
like the dress... and the da capo part is really superbe!
You do not know anything apparently about the support of the singers and the use of their resonators. This one singer has all the support on the shoulders, so we will not see her on stage long. This is a huge mistake to let them do that, it's due to bad teachers. Her mouth problem is not trivial either.
Vivica looks lovely here. And, God, what a difficult aria! She copes gracefully…
Why don't all these negative voices try to refrain from contributing their personal opinion as an absolute and try to analyze her singing objectively? Try to distance yourself from your own ignorant prejudice and you will hear that she is, indeed, a superb singer. I have been singing for 25 years and I don't hear a "wa-wa-wa" sound; those who hear it while looking at her hear it because they want to. Eine Ausnahmesängerin.
Bravo Vivica ❤💐👚🎼🎵🎶
When you learn in high school and in the faculty!!! Yyou don't learn this technique with the lips!!!! Because i make canto classic....i didn't learned like that!!!! I hope my english is not bad!!!! if is sorry for the errors!!!:P
Belíssimo!!!
Ouah t'as pas tardé toi!!!!!!
Once again, perfectly brilliant Vivica!...
In more of a normal tempo than what she did @ TCE, but flawless and powerful, the Vivica way wed all better get used to :))))))
The thing she does with her head at around 5:03 is priceless. XD
@Serinia4melodic aha, true, it is easier for a lot of people, and it is for people who either can't do vibrato from the diaphragm but mostly it is a lot more noticeable as it is much stronger in the sound of it, and thats why a lot of people use it because 'normal' vibrato can often be left unheard so a piece sounds rather empty
I love the pace...And she's got good low notes too...
Ok, her lower lip acts like a sewing machine, but still, there is hardly a singer in the world who can match the level of perfection of her art. We are so lucky to be living in this golden age of baroque singers with Vivica as one of its most brilliant artists.
No wonder, this girl has discovered a new technique
+Miss Coffee HAHAHAHAHA
Terrificante ....
+DMC Officiale 😉
+Mirko Pirrone si è vero! È quasi ridicola
hahaha true. her coloraturas are dreadful and simply wrong. she does them with her jaw+lips. never seen a person do this before! xD
Fantastica 🌹🇨🇴🌹 y Hermosa
@ales1329 And this is just her take on the song, using her own technique to get the desired effect. She still did a good job, whether or not you think she is using a good technique.
Excellent!
Her technique is NOT correct you guys nor are her runs tasteful. It sounds like a boarder line dog growl because of the tension between her lips and teeth. Doesn't look cute.
Hello!!! How are you doing today, please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you’re a fan ? Have a great day… Stay Safe!
Yes :) I think he is very amazed with Vivica :)
Mais quelle est cette absurdité?
What the fuck???? She IS brilliant. I just saw her... twice as Angelina (Cenerentola) without a micro. She was not only stunning but also powerful and LOUD.
God I can't believe these fights. She's got her mouth thing, as many singers have a "weirdness" but she sounds marvellous and she's gorgeous. I'm losing my mind on trying to explain how disappointed I am in people who trash Vivica.
Her timbre is so beautiful...
Beautiful
She did justice to the song
Incredibile !!!!!!!!!!
love it ^^ awesome performance :)
@MrOliverRich The coloratura is just fine. It is just being produced with a good bit more tension than she needs to do. Her lips don't just spazz when she's singing coloratura -- high-sustained notes are equally affectuated as well. On a side note, diaphragmatic coloratura (continuous-panting as opposed to only when changing directions) can be equally damaging due to the changes of speed and temperature of air being, literally, pushed over the vocal folds.
WOW!!.....JUST = WOW!!
Beautiful....
Bravissimo Vivica!!!!!
watch out: don't loose your articifial teeth!
LOL =))
The Best...................................
MARAVILLOSA!!!!
