She unabashedly dreams of getting married, having children, and living out a classic ideal of romantic love. This beacon of optimism acts as a stand-in for viewers who can identify with her conventional desire for a perfect-looking fairy tale. But if we look closer, much of the series is devoted to disproving the various “love myths” that Charlotte believes in. Here’s our Take on how, by showing how Charlotte is wrong about everything to do with love-but still right to believe in it -Sex and the City guides us to a deeper understanding of what romance is really all about.

I think this video has a bad, misleading title. It indicates that Charlotte was never right in any aspect of her life. I think a clarification of what Charlotte got wrong about love would be less damning towards her as a character. =|

    I know a girl who is Charlotte-type.
Girls like that are super optimistic, kind and care about their friends. We shouldn't blame them for wanting good-looking wealthy guy. They are pretty and good-looking by themselves, I think they have all rights to ask for it. I see myself only with a partner that as smart as I am. And I have never been shamed for it. People just think it's logical, that a smart girl prefers to date smart people. But why whenever pretty girls wanting to be with a pretty guy - everybody is so not here for it?

Absolutely ! I have always attracted guys who preferred me without any makeup and nice clothes on. Well, that's because I was always attracted myself to laid back guys who didn't care much about appearence and mundanity and preferred experiences over possessions. It may sound strange, but I've never been with a rich man and I wouldn't like to, because with money usually comes certain social obligations or values that I am utterly allergic to. I'm very happy living a simple life instead.

I think you missed the point of the video. They weren't saying that Charlotte was wrong to have preferences. Just that she was so focused on the perfect idea of what a partner and marriage should be, she lost sight of actually finding a real connection with someone. She eventually let go of that rigid way of thinking and a met a loving partner that she really connected with. There is no shame in having ideals. But also know that life rarely works out the way you first envision. If you are too strict with your rules, you might miss out on some really great people.

Kristin Davis' portaryal of Charlotte is highly underrated. Mostly because her character is arguably the least edgy among the four main leads. She's often overlooked due to her being the most classically pretty yet vanilla character. It's hard to make someone so annoyingly naive and sometimes unrealistically optimistic still likable.

    • @terzelrasmus-williams2530
      @terzelrasmus-williams2530 4 роки тому +107

Which is ironic in many ways, because as "vanilla" as she was thought to be, there were times she actually put herself out there. Like with the artist painting her vagina, and when she had sex with an Hasidic Jewish artist.
She was an art curator and appreciated the arts, which is an industry full of fiery passion and appreciation for beautiful things. Deep down, she is so not Vanilla. She is more like a smooth tiramisu with chocolate choc chips to surprise and delight the palate. Hehe

      @terzelrasmus-williams2530 4 роки тому +64

@GA I hear what you say and agree with you to a certain extent. In my opinion I feel that it wasn't fair to "money-shame" Charlotte when she didn't offer when Sam and Miranda offered money and then felt brazen enough to confront Charlotte about it and make her feel like a bad friend. Money is a sensitive topic for some people and I think Carrie should just have respected the fact that Charlotte didn't want to talk about it or even offer her money. Okay yes in the end Charlotte did give her her wedding ring from her first marriage to pawn off and make a down payment on her apartment. And it was an important lesson for Carrie. But Carrie basically bullied and "money-shamed" Charlotte for not offering money and for being rich. Money is not something one talks about lightly. A true friend would do what Charlotte - she schooled Carrie and Carrie realised that it's not fair for others to give her an easy way out. She even realised that she must handle her money better, which essentially led her to writing for Vogue and then getting her work published etc giving her more financial independence. It was an important episode in that light. Both friends essentially learnt from one another, but I do feel Carrie didn't have any tact on the matter.

Samantha enjoys sleeping around because she is lucky to always, with very few exceptions (maybe 2), sleep with guys who can satisfy her. In real life, you stumble upon a vast majority of guys who are terrible at sex and won't make any efforts unless you're their girlfriend. In real life, you do not want to spend years having countless sexual partners who won't give you any pleasure. In real life, you don't meet such hotties who will have sex with you after 1min of conversation. Samantha lives the ultimate porn fantasy for those reasons.
All of the four women in SATC are stereotypical but samantha goes one step further in my opinion.

While she was very conventional and that rubbed me wrong at times, I did like Charlotte's ability to believe in love and to always believe in it. In the first movie, its tested in a very profound way when Big and Carrie marry. When Big leaves her at the altar, it is Charlotte who yells at him that "NO!" assertively because to Charlotte, this was Carrie's moment of love fulfilled and dashed. It's the brave love towards her friend that makes her feel bad that her infertility struggle is over and she is pregnant naturally when Carrie is still struggling after. When she's nine months and she bumps into Big accidentally at a restaurant and tells him off, that's so huge for her to do since she never really did it before because of the myths she believed during the show that her water breaks. Charlotte is stronger and even in the second movie, as she struggles with the reality of motherhood to the point where Carrie is just cold to her even after the events of the first movie, she can admit further that its okay to not be okay sometimes. Charlotte will always believe in love. That's hopeful.

There is a disconnect between Charlotte's lived reality and what she believes, but it is her holding on to the delusion that gives her her tenacity. @RamblingSailors 4 роки тому +22

Truth. Studies about successful people show they are better able to visualize and believe in a version of reality in which they have and deserve what they want. Some interpretations of that study say those people are better able to lie to themselves, but that's not quite right- building skill and personality requires a willingness to assess yourself as you are as well.

I think the line of detrimental delusion is, when you feel like life loses worth without reaching your goal. One can have strong faith and reach for their dreams even when they seem unrealistic, but you shouldnt lay your complete future happiness on it. Believe equally as much in your ability to adapt to whatever life offers despite your vision of how it should be. That creates true resilience and gives you your best chances to reach whatever you wish for.

I think the reason American women (understandably) are also looking for social status in a guy is because it is so challenging to fe keep working if daycare is very expensive, or knowing that if you’re sick someone will take care of you, because there are little to no social nets to rely on. It’s a theory i read about in a Nordic theory of everything, and it stuck with me.

Watching it now as an adult I literally burst out laughing every time she talks, especially in the earlier seasons. Poor thing, glad she grew up a little eventually.

I think every character was wrong about something in this series. But I would argue than none of them were wrong about everything they did or thought. I also find it very sad that Carrie and Charlotte are so hated on these days. They both had more idealistic views on love but at the end they found their own happiness, no matter what someone else may think about it. I'm happy for Samantha for "fucking like a man" if that is how she found her empowerment, but I could never relate or live such a life. Simply because that doesn't make me happy, and that's ok. It's okay to want family and husband and maybe more "traditional" lifestyle. On the other hand there is pragmatic Miranda, realistic, down to earth but sometimes too realistic to let go and be with a man she loves. She also overcomes that and finds her happiness. Point is none of them are perfect, but they are all women, just because you relate more to one doesn't make others worse.

Thank you! I also find all the hate carrie and charlotte get absurd. I love all of them. They're flawed, like humans are. When I was younger I related to carrie and charlotte the most, now it's Miranda and samantha. All of them made mistakes, but so did every single person ever. I've been watching this show for 10 years now. I watch it when I'm sad, when I'm happy, when I'm heartbroken, it's just my go to. None of these women deserve the hate at all. 💙

@@anjab-1769 completely agree dear😊 i think all of us if we can be objective enough about ourselves can find bits and pieces of us that match each of these characters. Sometimes we relate to their flaws and sometimes we relate to their qualities. I truly think they were good friends and a great portrayal of modern women because i recognise myself and my female friends in them. If many people looked at my life like a show on tv there would be undoubtedly many who would find me annoying and flawed but that's exactly the point. It's such a good series, and the fact it's so relevant even now shows the greatness of it's characters

Very true. Also nowadays we tend to hate everything that is considered "girly". Romantic mindsets, love story, everything that is deemed "for girls" or as "girly" behavior is really heavily criticized. That's not normal, like why does society hate women ?

@@shanouboubou exactly!!! You're so right. I think someone sold us this mindset that only if you behave like a "man" (not be emotional, sleep around, be primarily career focused) you are than "empowered". I put men in quotations because this is obviously not how most of the men behave but it is a certain representation of masculinity in media. Women who are more reserved, romantic, women who cry and want family are now described as weak and wrong for wanting something that is traditionally more feminine. It's almost like the only way for woman to be seen as powerful is for them to behave like a stereotypical man hmm? 🤔

Everyone know loves Joes( women who are like little women Joe) but have almost no respect for Megs. I really see the sex and city girls as modern day Little Women
Miranda is Joe- a very career focused women who cared for independence but still found love.
Charlotte is Meg a romantic woman who’s main interest was being a family woman. Have kids and take care of her home
Carrie is Amy cares for romance a lot but wants a glamours life, unlike Charlotte she wants a wealthy man she can spend on her Manolo Blaniks
Samantha she is Joe but with alternate ending of not settling with a man.

There’s nothing wrong with it but the problem is that it’s very flimsy when written by men who don’t get the nuances. It requires women to be behind the camera, to do the writing, shooting, editing, etc. You can literally see the same problem manifest when men are put in charge of writing “empowered badass women” - we want the Charlize Theron of Mad Max and Atomic Blonde, not male-coded masturbation material with Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games and Red Sparrow.
It’s important to note that while Charlotte aspires to have these traditional things, Miranda has to actively choose them despite not really wanting them. The message that the show sends is that someone like her also realizes she wants a partner and to be a mother. She’s just as interesting as Charlotte because their preconceived notions are challenged and it’s so satisfying because they get what they want but on their own terms after struggling.

I love this video! I was a lot like Charlotte, in that I grew up wanting "what my grandparents had". I wanted to grow up, get married, have kids, live in a colonial house full of primitives, marry a man who was masculine and white collar, be a stay at home mother, and make dinner every night.
Some aspects of that were more important than others. When I got to the age I started dating seriously, I would latch onto a man "because he said the right things" or "wanted the right things". What I found myself in love with was more of the IDEA of the relationship than the man himself. We didn't laugh at the same things. He had weird expectations of me, and I had weird expectations of him. We may have had some surface commonality that didn't take us very far, but when it came to intimacy, there was a huge wall there, and when the wall was broken down, we found we didn't really LIKE each other very much, at all. We were ill matched.
When I met who I am pretty certain is "the one" it wasn't all perfect and planned out. I didn't follow "the rules". He had interests, as did I, that bored each other, but when we took the time to indulge the other person, even if it wasn't "our thing", we found we actually had a pretty good time, and the jokes wrote themselves! :'D He didn't look the way I imagined my soulmate to look. He wasn't super tall, he wasn't clean cut looking, he didn't work a white collar job, and he didn't wear button downs every day. He liked riding his sport bike, he wore t shirts and jeans, and instead of decorating his house with primitives, he had illustrations of snakes and tigers on his walls.
But when we first spent time together, we laughed, the whole time, as we had excellent conversation. The more time we spent together, the more free we felt to just be ourselves, without any affectation, without any expectation. We could be vulnerable, and goofy, and irritable, and apologetic, and lazy, and creative, and everything here, there, and in between. We accepted each other as we were, and loved each other even more for it. We agreed on the important things, and there was never a dull moment, because there was always so much to learn from each other and giggle at. And in our dullest moments, we had a best friend to cuddle up with, and fall asleep while watching Carpenter's THE THING.
And now as I look at him, eating lo mein and watching kung fu movies for the 74829574290th time, my heart swells with adoration, affection, sometimes irritation :P, but more than anything, true, unbridled love for the person he is. I can't imagine ever being attracted to another person the way I am to him. And part of love IS A CHOICE! At times when we don't agree, and we get annoyed with each other, we don't compete or put each other down. We come back, we either compromise or let the things that don't matter GO, and we are closer than ever. Love doesn't look like how I imagined Love would look - and I couldn't be more grateful for the surprise.

I don't enjoy Sex and the City as a show (nothing wrong with those who do, but I have my reasons), but I like this whole series of analyses on it. This one in particular with Charlotte makes me think more about myself.
I'm pretty independent-minded and self-sufficient, but also have some traditional romantic ideas of what I want from a relationship. I don't try to control anybody else's pace or set of rules, but I have my own. I try to make them flexible, but naturally I'm pretty stubborn and have grown to depend on rules for consistency in my life. That's probably my biggest conundrum/double standard as a person, but we all have them.
I like how with the different approaches the women take, nobody is really right or wrong. We all have flaws and strengths in our personalities. It makes sense we would have both blind spots, things we can learn from others, and good insights, or things people can learn from us, into love as well.

Charlotte is the character I walk away from the show feeling the most inspired by. Of course, I am an art major, so I automatically feel a bond towards her due to her career in the art gallery. She is capable of making mistakes or taking the wrong view of things, but she is so often the one who has to face these things head on and grow. I'm one of the few viewers who actually relates to and really likes Carrie, but even I can see how there is such a difference in their character as Charlotte chooses growth while Carrie suffers from some arrested development.
Charlotte has such beautiful style, is absolutely stunning, a lover of art, a lover of passion, is tender towards her friends, stands up for herself, and has such high standards. She has her own interesting form of neurotic that I adore because I feel like we all do. Her ability to have hope in the face of hardships...just so awesome.
And I'd like to say, her response to Carrie's demand about giving her money because Carrie is about to lose her apartment is one of my favorite moments of dialogue in the show. I love that she stands up for herself and the fact that she and Carrie are adults. And even when she offers money to Carrie (in the form of a ring), she does so gracefully.
In other words...I really love this character.

But she's classist (with the kind of money she expects every man she dates to have), snobbish (refusing to eat or drink anything in a fancy resort just because it was in a different country), and had far too many odd rules and regulations. The saddest scene was her argument with Miranda, when she gave up something that made her so happy, just to devote herself to the IDEA of something happy.
