These new effects are wonderful! What a great treat for Dalek fans! Being able to watch Remembrance of the Daleks in a whole new way is a dream come true. I particularly like the attention to detail in the battle sequences, the Special Weapons Dalek taking a glancing shot from a Renegade is a nice touch. The additional scenes are really interesting, it's fascinating seeing how the classic sequences have been edited - like the machine gunner reloading his weapon, the additional lights on the Special Weapon Dalek's cannon, and the incorporation of various deleted scenes. Beautiful work!
That mother ship explosion is AMAZING!!! In fact all the mothership shots are fantastic. The only place that I feel was a let down was the casket of Omega. But I'd give everything else an A++. Also classic Daleks can not aim worth a damn!!
I agree about the casket. The original looks like a very real, very old artefact, with barely perceptible imperfections in the way it's overlaid. I'm just gonna say it as it was mentioned on Twitter: The CGI Daleks were kind of pointless and very jarring. I think it takes away from the impact of seeing an actual Dalek prop go up the stairs for the first time. I'm unsure what it is but this one didn't gel with me when I saw that all four stories would have this special edition. I'm more looking forward to Silver Nemesis' effects as that was the story I'd wanted to see redone.
I've always hailed Remembrace as the best bridge between New and Classic. The story doesn't require any prior knowledge and involves the most iconic villains, not to mention the template for all future companions (Ace) at her absolute ass-kicking best. The script is tight, the action and pacing is exciting, the side-characters are all great, and it has a lot of references for both classic + new fans to enjoy (such as the "Stairs" moment, or the Doctor being asked if he's there for the Coalhill "Caretaker" job, something 12th Doctor does in the future). Objectively, it's one of the absolute best classic stories, and now, it gets to feel even more modern with these new effects.
Got to say as a child growing up in the 80's with the sheer weird and wacky sort of 80's eccentricities Doctor Who involved and the sort of sound effects they used with the Dalek voices and laser shots alone, it really was a special time watching Doctor Who.
Alright, we have a choice. Either we can take out the impressive and historical practical Dalek going up the stairs for the first time, or we can take out the blatantly obvious tarp that we laid down on that road like 40 years ago. Which do we go with?
Great video! Thanks Dan! I’ve not long watched the special edition; I thought there was something different about the end titles but I couldn’t put my finger on it! The new ones look far better!
A much better explosion at the climax and we see davros jetterston more clearly, not just a spec in space, thanks for the video ,I have the collection arriving Shorty, not going to be disappointed.
Would have liked some muzzle flashes from the army machine guns and possibly some bullet holes in the wall behind the Daleks. I just feel it would have made that more dynamic
Even the soft blur on the end credits is of nostalgic value. Not everything has to be sharp and clean especially when you've got Daleks on wheels taking corners on uneven roads! The more slick they make everything the else, the more jarring the actual practical effects are, which were very good for the time. This is the era of the Amiga 500 in our homes and the special edition should pay homage to that era and the tech available (Video Toaster, Lightwave, Deluxe Paint and Scala etc) with upscaling and period accurate tech tweaks only in my view. Hopefully the original version is included as well?
The newer effects in most areas are an improvement, especially Ace’s Omega charged bat, the only downside was the coffin, it’s supposed to be old, but it looks like it’s just been purchased at Wilko, and the Dalek self destruct was worse than 1988, 8/10
I was looking forward to this on on Blu-ray the most, but honestly I prefer the original effects. Even the rainbow particles at 3:00, a visual that I love, why couldn't the smooth new one be multi-coloured?
I'm not really against the idea of updating special effects, but I think you're right - I don't think the new ones are really an improvement on the originals. The black Dalek's death, maybe, but everything else is....well, it's OK. But so was the original.
i think i prefer the OG effects in pretty much every instance. maybe it's just because i've seen the old ones so many times, but all the new ones really look like they're stuck on top of the footage rather than actually a part of it.
I adore the remastered version, but I have to say, using After Effects for a lot of my UA-cam stuff, I can spot a LOT of the tricks used in the 2D side of these edits.
There's a huge amount of irony in a lot of the space shots. They explicitly say the ship is in geostationary orbit, and when we see the shots of earth from the position of the mothership, the size of earth makes logical sense for the required distance. Now, in violation of the onscreen dialogue, the mothership is now in low earth orbit, which doesn't make sense.
I must say I was disappointed - the CGI Daleks especially (hate the one on the bridge) - I love Imperial Daleks and the shape of these is just wrong. It's such a shame that after going to effort of creat physical models, the ships end up looking like CGI. They're well composed images though. Nothing technically wrong with them. It's just aesthetic issues for me. The best effects for me was giving a view to the shuttle roof hatch and the light on the Dalek Emperor's Eye staying before Davros reveals himself. Oh and the I M Foreman sign! Thanks as always for the comparison video, Dan.
@@Darren79 always a pleasure to hear your thoughts Darren although I do disagree with you for the most part, only effect that really bothered me here was the Supreme at the end. Hoping to try and blitz through the remaining 3 stories over the next few weeks.
Besides the production mat in the road the only thing I think they could have improved was the LMG, even if adding recoil would be too much work they could have added some muzzle flashes and smoke.
Some good, some not so good. Love the story although there’s one thing which really gets me, it’s The Doctor’s conversation with ACE. “The Daleks have a ship up there capable of cracking open this planet like an egg, but even they, ruthless though they are would think twice before making such a radical alteration to the time line.” Also The Doctor, he programs “The Hand Of Omega to fly into Skaro’s sun and turn it supernova.” No qualms about that.
The Daleks are a time-active species at this point. Eliminating them is only going to reduce alterations to history. The Daleks interact with the Earth repeatedly in the next couple of hundred years, undoing all of those may end up far too chaotic for Daleks to track.
I still maintain that New Who has over-powered the Daleks. 'Dalek' was a great story and I understand that in order to sell the threat that the lone Dalek posed and to explain the level of the Doctor's anger/guilt then it needed to be formidable. Dramatically for that story it makes sense, and this is now a post-Time War Dalek so I understand the upgrades. But now Daleks can absorb the internet, shield themselves, rotate their mid sections, fly etc. then all of Classic Who just would not work. You couldn't hollow one out and climb inside, you couldn't throw mud at the eye stalk or cover it with a coat, you couldn't push one out of a window or down a lift shaft and Ace and her bat wouldn't get close. I miss the old days!!
The outer space shots are a substantial improvement but thoseset on Earth were not that different to make much difference to the viewer - just the usual extend lightening dalek lasers rather than the fuzzier shorter ones. Simply changing the colour of the out the effects really doesn;t do anything. In fact many I prefer the original. So yes to the spacehsip and earth visuals but everything else I can't see what much of the point was.
My least favourite part of the audio changes tbh. I know this episode like the back of my hand and some lines just don't work in this new one. Compare the original "UNDER ATTACK" with the line they replaced it with. Not sure if it was an alternate take or if they got the surviving Dalek voice artist in the rerecord but it's a lot less punchy. And don't get me started with the sound changes in the final fight in episode 4, I get it was a consistency thing with the earlier scene, but again there's something about it that just feels less impactful
Thanks for putting this together. I'd say the mothership explosion is the only new effect that is significantly better than the original (it always bothered me it wasn't shot on high speed looking straight up to simulate a zero-g explosion). Given they have tinkered with some of the backgrounds I am baffled why they didn't erase the 1980s buildings that were clearly in shot in the cemetery...
This is my favorite feature on the DVD / Blu-rays. I've seen these episodes so many times over and over again over the years and the new effects manage to breathe new life into them for me.
Did anyone else notice they cut the line on the tv broadcast that was about to introduce the first episode of Doctor Who when Ace leaves to go find the Doctor? I was waiting for the scene to come on but was disapointed they had cut it from the special edition.
I'd say most of the new VFX were better, but they should have either kept the 1988 Dalek blaster bolts the same, or only altered one faction and not the other.
I remember the visceral fear of the dalek's suddenly being able to go up stairs! in the playground the next day ALL the talk (going on for days) was about the Dalek's going up stairs and chasing us!! lots of re-enacments going on with plungers and whisks and the playground steps!!!
Many classic stories looks far better with new effects, like Horror at Fang rock or Battlefield, but Rememberance of the Daleks isn't one of them. Its effects were great back in '88 and they hold up now.
My opinion upon hearing this had been done was that Remembrance was already perfect with great modelwork, and that any additions would be at best pointless and at worst distracting. Thanks for the confirmation.
@ACtheLegend You been keeping up.with the news? You don't need .e to tell you that there's nothing you can do to prevent the catharsis of spurious morality.
The BBC was at the cutting edge of squeezing what could be done out of VFX by 1988. I was at the BBC during this season run and visited the Visual Effects department. They had all the latest Quantel Paintbox stack and loads of custom gear including a mainframe Vax to do heavy graphic number crunching for intensive effects.
Most of the effects are pretty fine and I much prefer the new laser effects, but god that CGI Supreme is absolute wank (also I actually prefer the Emperor losing its eye earlier as the voice transitions from Dalek to Davros)
Side not I don't like how the 5.1 surround mix for this and on the DVD, replaced Mr Ratcliff's yell when he gets zapped by the lighting 5:39 with what sounds like a random stock yell sound. In fact that's one of many changes in the 5.1 surround mix I don't like, hen why I tend to stick with the original stereo mix. Also ironically this was the first ever Dr who story with a Stereo sound mix
The Imperial Daleks are described as having had prostheses grafted onto them compared with the Renegade Daleks who are the familiar brain-jellyfish kind
I do wish they’d put back in the section where the Doctor tells Davros he’s “far more than just another time lord”. That bit got cut from the original broadcast so late that the tapes had already gone out to the colonies with the scene in tact, so that’s the version I grew up with, recorded off the telly
I'll confess I was low key hoping a Dub with Nicolas Briggs daleks were available but that doesn't mean however I like the current voices any less. I can't wait to jump into the Season 25 collection.
Nice to get a better look at the Destiny of Stars (Imperial mothership), although the cloaked in shadows look really suited the gritty aesthetic of this story.
@@HiveFleetOni I clearly have memory problems. Eret-mensaiki Ska, the flagship of the Imperial Fleet. Excellent, thank you. I just couldn't imagine who other than Davros would've been throwing around fancy names.
@@ACtheLegend Would back the bolts instead of the beams, for 1) purely in-story in-world reasons and 2) it looks like it's ripping off Star Trek and that's not a good idea. This update looks like it was inspired by Star Trek phasers and that's not such a good idea. I have the novelisation of Remembrance in front of me now; Aaronovitch did refer to it as both being like a bolt of lightning, but also... ... well, this is why "Doctor Who" used to be better than "Star Trek", here's the bit where the Dalek in the scrap yard was firing... "Rachel ducked as a bolt of energy blew a hole in a bit of nearby machinery and shrapnel whined over her head ... The thing fired again, and this time Rachel traced the path of the bolt. I can see it moving, it can't be coherent light. Perhaps it's superheated plasma? ... The Doctor desperately zigzagged as bolts of energy flared around him..." The problem with a phaser beam is it would be very easy to hold down the trigger and sweep it across the field. No way to dodge, slicing death everywhere. Mechanically, it would be easier to have your energy source feed a big capacitor, then release that stored energy in one big burst like the plasma bolt. Not to mention a plasma bolt would burn with heat AND have electrical effects... and chemical effects depending on whatever chemical is getting turned into plasma that just MIGHT fluoresce as the body is getting thrown across the set. Of all the effects that should've been updated to still look similar, they should've kept the Dalek bolt blasts instead of turning it into a beam.
Am I missing something? What prompted the change to the titles and was it just for the end credits, as I thought the TARDIS looks a bit different, did they redo the whole sequence?
@DrWhoFanJ Oh I see, I once saw a 'making of' of the title sequence, I think it was on the DVD of Time and the Rani, but I might have to go have a re-watch as I don't remember there's more than one version, but your reply has cleared up the confusion. Thanks, I look forward to future videos.
@@DrWhoFanJ It's probably because of the way the BBC kept things, look what happened to the walls of the console room and the state of the box that was the exterior of The TARDIS, so footage of a title sequence is unlikely to be much different.
Love the new effects, but it’s reminded me that the 1988 originals were also very good for the time.
Does this need updated effects? Some of the newer ones even look worse, e.g. the floating coffin.
Besides the production mat in the road the only thing I think they could have improved was the LMG, even if adding recoil would be too much work they could have added some muzzle flashes and smoke.
I found the Hand of Omega graphics to be a bit jarring as the floating casket just didn't appear detailed enough
Some good, some not so good. Love the story although there’s one thing which really gets me, it’s The Doctor’s conversation with ACE.
“The Daleks have a ship up there capable of cracking open this planet like an egg, but even they, ruthless though they are would think twice before making such a radical alteration to the time line.”
Also The Doctor, he programs “The Hand Of Omega to fly into Skaro’s sun and turn it supernova.” No qualms about that.
I miss the old days!!
tbh, the shuttle docking shot didn't really need updating. original is so good
In the extended version, do they have the scene where The Doctor says “I’m far more than just another Timelord.”?
@@project_boredom2940 yes
The outer space shots are a substantial improvement but thoseset on Earth were not that different to make much difference to the viewer - just the usual extend lightening dalek lasers rather than the fuzzier shorter ones. Simply changing the colour of the out the effects really doesn;t do anything. In fact many I prefer the original. So yes to the spacehsip and earth visuals but everything else I can't see what much of the point was.
The updated special effects make 1988 & 2005 feel like the gap in time was much less than 17 years.
The new transmat effect is just hilarious.
They should have left that well alone! The original has charm.
Aside from the Hand of Omega burial CGI, I cant really say that I feel these new effects have added anything or improved anything.
I kind of feel this story really didn't need it's effects updated and from the look of it my feelings remain the same
Same here.
The Hand of Omega looked better in the original I'd say
Thanks for putting this together. I'd say the mothership explosion is the only new effect that is significantly better than the original (it always bothered me it wasn't shot on high speed looking straight up to simulate a zero-g explosion). Given they have tinkered with some of the backgrounds I am baffled why they didn't erase the 1980s buildings that were clearly in shot in the cemetery...
The tracking was near impossible to make it look right.
12:18 So THAT'S how Davros survived! 😮
My favourite story ever, I am so pumped for this!!!!
I like the new effects, they still feel 80s but higher budget. Respectful enough, I'd say.
Many classic stories looks far better with new effects, like Horror at Fang rock or Battlefield, but Rememberance of the Daleks isn't one of them. Its effects were great back in '88 and they hold up now.
3:50
So, bullets just didn't exist in 1988?
You'd think that even a muzzle flash would've been added with the rest of the new effects.
Awesome comparison
My opinion upon hearing this had been done was that Remembrance was already perfect with great modelwork, and that any additions would be at best pointless and at worst distracting.
Thanks for the confirmation.
Haven't you got some kind of catharsis of spurious morality to go and moan about, Scrapyard?
There was a couple of tiny things they could improve. Out of all the stories I agree there wasn't much that could be improved.
@ACtheLegend You been keeping up.with the news? You don't need .e to tell you that there's nothing you can do to prevent the catharsis of spurious morality.
YES!!!! IVE WANTED A SPECIAL EDTION SO BADLY AND THIS IS PERFECT!!!!
FANTASTIC!! 😁
When Blake's 7 Series 1 comes out on Bluray, could you please do an Effects comparison?
@@octaviusfooks7194 I’m debating it.
When will we see the rest of Season 25? Really looking forward to seeing Happiness Patrol FX! 😁
Most of the effects are pretty fine and I much prefer the new laser effects, but god that CGI Supreme is absolute wank (also I actually prefer the Emperor losing its eye earlier as the voice transitions from Dalek to Davros)
How have they managed to make some of the shots worse 🥴
Such as?
Side not I don't like how the 5.1 surround mix for this and on the DVD, replaced Mr Ratcliff's yell when he gets zapped by the lighting 5:39 with what sounds like a random stock yell sound. In fact that's one of many changes in the 5.1 surround mix I don't like, hen why I tend to stick with the original stereo mix. Also ironically this was the first ever Dr who story with a Stereo sound mix
@@silverdaleks1 not really, the first story with a Stereo sound mix was actually Frontios.
@@DanTheMan2150AD oh well the info and facts subs on the DVD said Remembrance was the first to be stereo..
Brilliant dalek story
3:11 did the daleks use to have crab claws?
The Imperial Daleks are described as having had prostheses grafted onto them compared with the Renegade Daleks who are the familiar brain-jellyfish kind
I do wish they’d put back in the section where the Doctor tells Davros he’s “far more than just another time lord”.
That bit got cut from the original broadcast so late that the tapes had already gone out to the colonies with the scene in tact, so that’s the version I grew up with, recorded off the telly
They have. It’s on the special edition.
@@DrWhoFanJJust the scene, or in the Final Cut?
@@wintyrqueen Your question doesn’t make sense in response to what I said.
@@DrWhoFanJis the scene restored into the episode, or is it only viewable as an extra?
@ Both.
I prefer the original but good job
This box set is absolutely brilliant
It's subtle, it's not a lucas. Good stuff.
Is there a reason they didn’t do this for season 24 & 26 please?
Do happiness patrol please 🙏
Good job with the effects. Petty you could make the daleks less wobbly .
even better than the last Nu Who series
Wonder why they cut the Doctor Who in TV meta reference.
Where did that name come from?
@ The very, very excellent novelisation of Remembrance 😊
@@HiveFleetOni I clearly have memory problems. Eret-mensaiki Ska, the flagship of the Imperial Fleet. Excellent, thank you.
I just couldn't imagine who other than Davros would've been throwing around fancy names.
Is that a Dot Cotton cameo around 8:06?
Of all the stories that didn’t really need updated effects….
come on now, those original Dalek beams are weak-as...
Perhaps it's superheated plasma? ... The Doctor desperately zigzagged as bolts of energy flared around him..."
The problem with a phaser beam is it would be very easy to hold down the trigger and sweep it across the field.
They found an earlier version of the titles that wasn’t so zoomed in to the central section.
@@Nigel-xp4rf It wouldn’t have been mentioned on previous features as it was only discovered at all during the preparation of this Season 25 set.
@@DrWhoFanJ It's probably because of the way the BBC kept things, look what happened to the walls of the console room and the state of the box that was the exterior of The TARDIS, so footage of a title sequence is unlikely to be much different. I bet that the paperwork and other stuff for the sequence by Bernard Lodge, wouldn't have been kept if he hadn't put so much work into it.
