  • Welcome to the final episode of our shed build to summarize the project and discuss materials and cost. This video shows a kind of time lapse of the entire build while I discuss the materials I used for each phase. The beginning of each phase shows a screen shot of a spreadsheet listing the materials and cost for that phase. See the timestamps below for each of the materials screen shots if you’d like a longer look at each list. Please remember that all of the build that’s happening in the background is documented in greater detail in the other videos in this series.
    Material/Cost Screenshot Timestamps:
0:39 - Floor (Home Depot - no discount)
1:17 - Walls (Lowe’s material discounted through bid desk)
2:06 - Roof (Lowe’s material discounted through bid desk)
4:59 - Windows (Lowe’s material discounted through bid desk)
This is a 12'x24' wooden shed with a single slope metal roof and LP SmartSide siding.
I'll try to summarize some of the construction stats/key points here:
    FLOOR:
    - 12' x 24'
    - 4' x 4' treated skid foundation
    - 2" x 8" joists @ 16" OC
    - 3/4" plywood subfloor
    WALLS:
    - 2" x 4" construction with double top plates
    - (3) 3' x 2' sliding windows
    - DIY double door - 59” x 80”
    - 1/2" OSB sheathing
    - House wrap
    - LP SmartSide paneling
    ROOF:
    - 16' x 27'
    - 1.5-in-12 pitch (minimum recommended by metal roof mfr), single slope
    - 2" x 8" rafters @ 24" OC
    - 1/2" plywood sheathing, with sheathing clips
    - Synthetic roofing paper
    - 29 gauge galvalume metal roofing panels (3' x 16' each)
    Thanks for watching!

Hey Brian, thanks for sharing the series. I'm doing an L-Shaped garden / storage shed build. I found your channel on the Sketchup guide (Part 2), when I found out I needed a build permit. As you've shown, the plan would have been the right thing to do regardless. I just got to this cost video, and wanted to say thanks. The pace of the videos is spot on, and your explanations and attention to the lessons learned are helpful and appreciated. Look forward to checking out what you did with the house. All the best, and thanks for making all of this.

Just priced this building out at Lowes this week and it came in around $8500, as were building it in remote Alaska in the Aleutians July of 2022 with a 3/12 pitch roof and less overhang as not to catch so much wind driven rain underneath as we get high winds often. Thank you for all the help

Thanks for that info. I’ve been trying to compare what pricing is like for a shed build like this with todays prices. The pre built sheds are crazy expensive but if a 12x20 shed material list comes out to $8500 then the prebuilts aren’t too far off.

I got 90% of this material for free off of marketplace. Someone was just giving away I wood. Just have to buy the plywood.

We just finished watching this ENTIRE shed build series @MidlifePrices! Excellent job! What's crazy is that we have drawn out plans for our shed build and when we started watching yours, our plans are nearly identical except ours will be 14'x48' footprint with a roof 16'x50' so we can use it for rain water catchment. We're looking forward to checking out more of your videos! Thanks for sharing your journey on the build. You did an excellent job, Brian!

Fun to do a project. Don't know much about your channel but I have to assume you aren't native to the area. Always easy to see transplants by thier material choices. Nothing beats stucco for cladding in the desert (high or low) and for a shed definately a concrete floor. But maybe you aren't storing anything heavy. I only say anything because I just built something very similiar (mine is about 3 ft deeper) with those materials except I have 2x6 walls and 2x10 rafters and a steel door and my total was approx $2850. That includes 3500psi concrete and paying for concrete and framing labor. I would have gone metal roofing but I matched the shingles on my home. I saw some of the other comments and although your color choices aren't a match for me my only comment is that earth tones don't fade at the same rate and I for one hate painting just because I want a unnatural color scheme. Also, those bird mouths aren't deep enough, they should be about 1/3 deep of the material to matter (hold down). Congrats on the project and I'll be thinking of you painting... haha!

What does the community think about building this over an inground pool? The filter and pool heater is on the concrete pad next to the pool. Its a loooong story as to why the building didn't get built over it when it was suppose to. Now, I'm thinking of doing it by myself. I have a pretty good knowledge of building techniques. Anyways, back to my main question- Could you put this over a pool? I realize we will have to add moisture barriers on the inside and all that mess. I've got 6 windows, three 5 foot sliding patio doors (which I may end up only using 2 of them, someone got carried away) and an exhaust fan that would go at the top of the wall above the heater (it's propane). I've had all the doors and windows and things bought for over a year. Everyone SAYS they can do it, but the contractors that are actually really good are all either too busy, or don't want such a big job. Just any info or tips are appreciated. I've talked to a lot of people about it and I'm friends with multiple contractors that wouldn't mind helping me with some of it. Thanks...
Also @MidlifePrices I LOVE IT!!!! Glad I found your channel

    • @MidlifePrices
      @MidlifePrices  3 роки тому

Thanks for following! You've already touched on my major concern, which would be moisture. If you think you've got that addressed, I'd say go for it! Can't think of anything else that would be different. Good luck! 👍

    • @MidlifePrices

I built a shed exactly like this, and I am wondering if you went back and vented the shed or ceiling. I would imagine it gets pretty hot in there all sealed up.

    • @MidlifePrices
      @MidlifePrices  4 роки тому +3

That's a very valid question. I have not vented (yet). I'd like to see how bad it gets through this summer. I still have the ability to add something like a whirlybird, if I need to, but I wanted to see how it performed first. Although the shed is "sealed," there are actually gaps in a few places, like the blocking that was put in to meet the top plates on the walls, so air can move, at least a little bit. I'm also hoping that the windows will help with airflow. This was actually one of the main reasons for having the windows, and having them across from each other to help air move. If I do end up adding a vent, I will document it and add it to the shed build series.
