Imagine showing up to a workplace everyday with no clients, no production line, no benefit package, no services rendered, and no sponsors. The only way to make money is to find a way to take it from your coworkers by trickery. Trickery is permitted, as long as everyone plays by the same established set of rules and the boss takes a 5% cut from all transactions.
The results are about what you would expect from that type of environment: a few gifted and lucky people survive, with huge turnover rates who are forced to exit financially/mentally decimated.

i have been playing poker for 25 years, but i never had time or the bankroll to play all the time. I had to take care of my mom until she was 93 years old. Now i am retired and have a bankroll, im 67 years old and will start playing full time. Mainly tournamnets, and i can play senior tournaments and the WSOP. I am excited to finally getting to play when i want, but not everyday. The key is to stay fit, going to gym 4 to 5 times a week. Eating good, and sleeping. I dont want the daily grind, i will pick my spots. But i have health insurance , pensions, investments,,,,,

Playing poker for a living is not all it is cracked up to be. I tried grinding it out in casinos winning a little bit at a time. I was making money but the poker lifestyle takes an incredible toll on everything else in your life. Spending 50 to 60 hours a week at the tables can be mentally and emotionally draining. I still play poker but I cut back my hours big time and it is no longer my sole source of income.

100%. I think it is also a good thing for a pro to lose the value of money. If I valued my money, and my chips, it would be much more difficult to risk them. I learned to count cards at Blackjack and went to vegas. I spent several hours to come out a few dollars ahead. Between playing the game and hiding what I was doing, it was a lot of effort. I might have played Blackjack for fun before, but doing it as a job was hard, boring, and not profitable unless the stakes are very high, and then you become a target. Make it to the level of famous and on tv, perhaps business ventures on the side, and it might be rock star fun. But making a middle class living is problematic and less fun than you might imagine.

It's a fun hobby income for me and allows me to buy fun material things in life I wouldn't be able to justify or afford otherwise. My career supports me and poker gives me a lot of extra spending cash on the side. I honestly feel that's the best approach. It always seems like poker is the dream to make a living when I am on an upswing and have a graph like a rocket ship but try keeping your composure and playing through a downswing when your mortgage/rent depends on the cards. I was profitable for a while then crashed and rebuilt my stack. Then found options trading through some random UA-cam video and it change my life.

It's more difficult to be a constantly profitable and professional player nowadays for a simple reason:
    Nits.
And I am not referring to anyone in particular reading this comment but rather the fact that most of the tables nowadays have these "fold everything except aces, kings and queens while snap folding AK preflop" type of nits who ONLY play when they have the nuts.
Most end up losing not because they lack the time to play but rather because there are not as many bad players as there used to be. Yes, there are still plenty of bad players (or gamblers rather) but much less than before and the thing is, they are too tight with their money while those of us who can afford the games, we have a hard time finding splashy players this day and age.
Don't be fooled by anyone who tells you that you are losing because you "tilt" or are too married to your pocket jacks or tens preflop that you are too unwilling to unfold or that you aren't dedicating enough time it, you lose because you are sitting down with overly tight nits who never speak and never give action until they have it.
Too many overeducated players in today's game.

Honestly though you can exploit/ avoid nits easily. I'm still learning but from what I've seen there's still an almost staggering amount of false ego in the game. Your logic is a bit faulty I think. So I play on 10NL pokerstars with a HUD and am winning over 17k hands, winning over 25k hands if you include 5NL. The way to deal with NITs on the table is to avoid them. Just fold preflop, unless you either have a very good hand yourself or a good implied odds hand.
However, if literally everyone at your table is a NIT then you've got a problem. They're both boring to play against and it's close to impossible to book significant profits against them. But if it's 1 or 2 NITs? They're practically invisible players at the table and you can fold most of the time when they decide to enter a pot or raise.
Even on a 6max table full of NITs, all you need is 1 or two fish or recreationals to keep a game going.
There's more details as well here. There's degrees of NIT hood. Some NITs are good players, some are bad players. Some people are just slight nits, some people are Uber NITs. It's much harder to deal with the slight NITs (18 or 19 VPIP people on 6max), because these people are usually playing a good tight aggressive strategy and will 3-bet if they think you're exploiting their tightness by opening wide.
6max online, GTO VPIP is around 25 I would estimate

Young people are outperforming the old salts, thanks to poker software which i practice a lot on. In Play money the higher stakes have more intelligent players as opposed to the low stakes bingo playing fish/donks. Theres fish in every limit.

Personally I know many office workers who make a decent living sitting in a cubicle and taking shit from their boss. I play poker for 1/2 my income and sell online for the other half. I make a very average living but feel like I am much happier than cubicle guy.

Reality is that these are the same people, moving the same money around, and casino/tournament org cashing in on commission, fees and PPV.
Poker is just pretentious casino and nothing else.
If you made a bot that did all in at complete random, you would get to same win/loss results in long-term as the most careful player ever.
