The sleeves don't fully clip together until the shelf is in place (they get squeezed together with the pressure of the shelf). Just make sure that the little ridge that is on the inside of each sleeve is in a notch on the pole and that both sleeves are facing the same direction with the arrows pointing up. Only do one set of sleeves at a time, do one shelf and then move on to the next. I hope this helps
Yes, you can change the height, but you have to move the plastic pieces as well. We usually use a rubber mallet to tap the shelf up, move the clips and then reposition the shelf.
I am sorry to hear that you had trouble. These have been our favorite shelving units for over 20 years!! If you tried to put it together by yourself, you may have had a hard time lowering both sides of the shelf at the same time. This is critical to the shelf not getting 'stuck' and not knocking off the black snaps. I hope you give it another try. They really are the best.
The company sent me this UA-cam channel in answer to my second to last SHELF on the top would not fit properly so I am really disgusted. Why did they SEND this to me when a shelf doesn’t work. I have put probably 15 of these shelving units together before… I’ve never had one NOT fit like this. This isn’t your fault, but the company should understand that they really did a bad service sending me this UA-cam link. It definitely does not show any trouble shooting information .
So sorry you are frustrated. We don’t work for Seville, so we can’t help you with replacement parts. Their customer service is usually good, so maybe you just got a defective part and they can send you a new one. Good luck.

When she mentioned putting them on the same side, did she mean wide [side] ways or both front or both back?
We usually recommend both in front so they are easy to reach to lock or unlock

is the length adjustable? i read that the assembled product is 58 inches long... can that be reduced?

The clips compress when the shelf is lowered. The holes in the shelves are slightly tapered to “lock” in on the clips
