Bought the Echobrain the other day, and I'm having a lot of fun with it - I find myself using the self oscillation thing quite a lot. If you set the time to around 1-2 o'clock and do the same with the repeats and then slowly push it to 2-3 o'clock, you can also get a a very nice wall of reinforcement when you feed it into a reverb. (I use the Fender Marine Layer either on shimmer or modulate mode for this)
Most of them were fine with typical delay/echo settings but the oscillation test was the final proof. TC Echobrain seemed to do both fairly well, a lot like old Boss delays, so did the Joyo and the Behringers. I was quite disappointed with the Dr J given its extra features.
The Behringer VD400 is a clear winner as far as I am concerned. Sounds beautiful. Also I think it is the cheapest of these pedals, and one of the true analog pedals in this test, some of them are analog voiced digital delays.
Just found out that Behringer purchased TC. It's getting harder to find some behringer pedals. TC released a series of pedals (including the echo brain) which were upgraded versions of Behringer pedals. It seems like they're phasing out some of the behringer stuff and replacing it with the better build quality of the TC stuff. Effectively the echo brain is like the replacement, the follow up, the next edition of the VD400. These two pedals do seem to have a very similar sound although i still think the VD400 sounds a bit warmer. The VD400 sounds like it has a bit more noise though...
I like the Caline blue ocean. Has a wet, watery, reverby quality, whereas the others sound a little more dry and separated. Behringer is my preferred analog pedal though.
it is :) i thought I'd include it because it had an analog setting haha! I think the vintage delay is very underrated though great lil pedal! thanks for the comment man :)
TC echobrain my Fav out of these but Mooer and JOYO are decent for the price. Have a Mooer pitch Box and i have a feeling i may end up with an ELEC LADY somewhere down the line. That seems to be surprisingly one of the best Flangers on the market and the price is def right and its very pedalbaord friendly size for sure.
I wish youd have done this with all of the cheap affordable delays because i cant find any videos of certain cheap delays and practically all delays Sound different when they self oscilate
The TC Echobrain has significant noise / whine when activated. Worst noise of the bunch. I'm really turned off TCE for this reason. Mooer is the winner here by my book.
Sadly I dont have one now that does it. I used to have an olde Yamaha digital delay that did it wonderfully, and actually sampled for about 5 seconds. I was thinking of getting a cheap Stagg delay as they do it, and their only £25. My chums got one and never had any issues with it for the cash.
luv your demo.. i have behringer echo machine and luv thats versatile tone. i also used joyo analog delay and behringer vintage time machine... for different use. they are different delay. quality isn't bad but comparison for other boutique delay(such as timeline or futher) they have some difference. but i think it's only difference not quality. also good delay. thanks for your review once again.
Belcat is pure trash. By judging both mode, I'd say that my top is : 1. Joyo Analog Delay 2. Behringer EM600 / Behringer VD400 3. Tc Echobrain 4. Baby Boom
I'm highly dubious. I think several are not analogue, despite claiming to be. It's not common for Chinese brands to do this. they merely analogue sounding - probably using a certain type of digital delay chip.
Only the Echobrain, Behringer Vintage Delay, and Mooer Ana Echo are actually analog. The others (minus the Echo Machine) use the digital PT2399 chip, as most "analog" delays under $80 do.
I think there's too much ...delay... between sections of this video -- but I'd love to get other people's ...feedback. :) .... OK but seriously, good and very useful video, thanks!
Most of these pedals aren't analog. I got 2 doa Behringer VD400s in a row and am looking for a true bucket brigade alternative at around the same price. The reason is that you can feel true analog when you play it. It may sound near identical when comparing sweet spots but when you actually play it, there's a sensitivity that you can't replicate. It's like a piano vs a midi keyboard, sure they sound similar on the cd but the player's end is like night and day.
they aren't all analogue delays. i suspect only half are at the most. several are not analogue, despite claiming to be - It's not common for Chinese brands to do this. they merely analogue sounding, probably using a certain type of lo-fi sounding digital delay chip.
@@ValSchnitzel I think they're all analogue, except for the echo machine... Oh wait. The blue ocean too. I dunno. I'm pretty sure that the Behringer is analog, a clone of the boss dm2.
BUT… is “analog” a true descriptor or just a buzzword for these pedals? I really don’t know. Are they *actually* analog or not? I don’t know. Does it really matter? I don’t know that either.
Its a good question and an even more interesting debate :) I just went for anything that gave an "analog delay" sound. I feel thats what most people are interested in, the actual sonic character of the pedal. They all aim for that darker grittier vibe, even if they are digital imposters haha
WTH with all the endless feedback oscillations. That's fkg irritating. I've never seen a delay that didn't do that and it's useless. You should have turned on a distortion pedal so we could hear what it sounds like for a solo.
Behringer Vintage Delay: 0:30
Biyang Time Machine: 1:36
TC Echobrain: 2:08
Caline Blue Ocean: 3:14
Belcat Analog Delay: 4:20
Joyo Analog Delay: 4:54
0:31 - Behringer VD400 - 24$ on amazon
1:03 - Behringer EM600 - didn't find price
1:36 - babyboom delay - 42$ on Aliexpress
2:08 - TC echobrain - 74$ on amazon
2:40 - Dr J shadow echo - 105$ on Aliexpress
3:14 - Caline blue ocean - 30$ on aliexpress
3:47 - Mooer ana echo - 41$ on aliexpress
4:20 - belcat analog delay - 45$ on amazon
4:54 - joyo Analog delay - 40$ on aliexpress
So the VD400 wins. As long as I can find the 8 repeat per second slapback sweet spot, that works for me.
Bat Eats Moth I ordered the vd400 from amazon for 16$😂 had a 10$ cupon

Baby Boom for me. Has the longest delay. The Blue Ocean sounds also very nice and soft. The Echo Machine has a ton of features.
do you thing the echo machine recreates the Analog sound well?
I liked the baby boom as well
I think the sound quality of the repeats it's great!
well i have a digital delay,i bought The Prophet by Tc and i love it,your demo review of that pedal was very helpful dude

TC switches on. High pitch whine! :o Baby The two blue boxes do it 4 me
Has nobody noticed the hiss on TC Echobrain (2:07) ?
Pedro Cardoso mine hisses like crazy too.
Best bang for your buck: Blue Ocean. Best for sound - TC. Best for features - Echo Machine.
Love the Echo Brain! what did you think about the Mooer Ana Echo?
Bang for your buck, no kidding. I got a Blue Ocean for $18

the TC Echobrain is very tempting
they go really cheap if you can find one second hand :)

thanks for doing this. very interesting to see so many cheap delays compared like this.
I plan on doing the same with the "digital delays" I have :) keep an eye out for that!
Anaecho vs VD400, which One would you prefer and why? However, great comparison and even better playing!
Hey Ryan, Which is your favorite??
hey thanks for the review, this is exactly what I need
Glad it could help :)
Behringer and echo brain had no pop on the switch. That is important on a delay
Very well done video and helpful, thanks.
In the first "test run", were the levels really set equally between the different pedals?
Wow the echo machine oscillation sounds really complex, and that wasn't even on a special mode, or with mod turned up!?!?
I've got the Belcat one, does most of what I need, except oscillation, grrrrrr
I completely forgot that the Belcat didn't oscillate.. such a shame! what's your favourite pedal for oscillation?
