    ____________________________________
    In this clip, John Salley gives the backstory to his relationship with Dennis Rodman. He talks about how they played together during a high school showcase and how Dennis helped him get MVP honors. He also clarifies what Dennis meant by saying he didn't like his time in Detroit. To John Salley, Dennis wasn't a fan of how the business operated in Detroit which saw their beloved coach Chuck Daly leave as well as other players including John. He said that by the time Dennis got to Chicago he was in a much more secure environment and he [Dennis] had come into his own on a personal level.
    John Salley also discussed his first year in the NBA which was financially tumultuous. He said that he had to learn about taxes, and money management the hard way. According to Salley, his first contract paid him roughly $230K/year and after breaking down his monthly expenses John saw that he was completely overextending himself. At season's end John said he was broke and needed to take out a personal loan.

      vlad, seriously you need to stop being a bulls homer. rodman loved detroit because chuck daly was a father to him. and daly left, so that is why rodman has a bad memory. he was a kid....missed his father.

    Rodman may have hated Detroit, but fans never would have known. Rodman played harder than any other two Pistons combined. And I'm pretty sure Rodman's growth was helped a lot by playing defense alongside Laimbeer.

      rodman loved detroit. he loved chuck daly and when daly left he just lost his mind.

    • @mangrove
      @mangrove 2 роки тому +1

      He learned to rebound (Laimbeer was one of the top rebounders in the league in the 80s, through smarts and effort) and how to get into opponents' heads from Lam and Rick Mahorn. I think Sal is right when he says Dennis only hated Detroit after his personal life was imploding and those he was close with on the team (Daly, Sal) were jettisoned.

    Something John said which happened ALL over the country was black flight. That happened in EVERY part of the country(and is probably still going on). Every neighborhood i grew up in Memphis, white people lived there first. One of the neighborhoods i lived in(Longview Heights section of South Memphis)was an exclusive area from the early 50's until the late 60's. Isaac "Shaft" Hayes moved/lived in Longview Heights in the late 60's-early 70's. The so called white flight stated there in the mid 60's and by the time we moved there in 1977, it was 99% black and only elderly whites were still living in the neighborhood. There are probably millions of stories about this everywhere in the country.

    being around their age and growing up in detroit, interesting. rodman had mostly white friends. salley lived downtown and had mostly black friends and went to black clubs. interesting to see how as salley has gotten older race doesnt really play a big role. john references many white players and such. he didnt seem to have many white friends at 22. such an interesting guy...matured and developed into a great guy.

    The government is actually the highest paid NBA player. How could that be if they're not even bench warmers?
