  • When you put your recyclables into a bin, chances are they're taken to a MRF, or a materials recovery facility. A MRF will sort recyclables using people and machines so they can be "recycled," "upcycled," or "downcycled."
    At a MRF you'll see recycling trucks like the kinds driving around your neighborhood, or you might see big 48-foot long semi-trucks back in and deposit their loads of recyclables they collected at "transfer stations" somewhere else.
    A transfer station is a place where recycling trucks drop off their loads to be "transferred" somewhere else...like to a MRF!
    This is a timelapse of the "tipping floor" at the Cal-Waste MRF in Galt, California. It's called a tipping floor because some recycle trucks "tip" the rear part of the vehicle to let the recyclables slide onto the floor where a loader can scoop them up and place them on a conveyor belt to begin the sorting.
