Panfish: Shallow and Deep?

  • Ice anglers are often faced with the dilemma: where to find panfish under the ice. In this video, James Lindner and Phil Laube share their thoughts on the matter and break down how to target panfish through the ice in shallow and deep water.
When it comes to winter panfish, most anglers tend to think of deepwater basins, but in reality, good numbers of panfish can be found in shallow water as well.
Whether the crappies and bluegills are out deep or in shallow, the key to finding them is by identifying good habitat. Identifying good habitat will help save you some search time by condensing the search area.
When searching in shallow water you should always check should green weed beds or weed lines next to deep water. You should also look for any shallow saddle system that separates deep water. In deep water look for any hard too soft bottom transitions and look for any main lake points that stick into the deep basins.
All these are likely spots that will concentrate panfish.Utilizing your electronics can really speed up the process of locating fish. Whether it is an Aqua Vu camera or Humminbird Mega 360 both of these units will help you eliminate the search time when locating bluegills and crappies.
Once you locate a school of fish whether it is deep or shallow there are two styles of presentations you should have ready to go. The first is something that’s a little larger and more aggressive. Small spoons or a jig and plastic are great to start with.
Use these aggressive baits to gauge the mood of the fish. If they are super aggressive and in a good feeding mood then you are good to go.
If the fish are in a more neutral mood make the switch over to a small tungsten jig and a euro larvae or wax worm. Work it real slow to entice bites.
Just remember on most good panfish lakes, not every fish is going to be doing the same thing. Sure there are going to be fish in your classic deepwater basins, but a lot of times there are going to be just as many fish up on shallow structures.

When you are catching the huge crappies, why are you throwing them back ??? Do you not like eating free fish ???

One should never keep huge crappie or bluegill. It’s horrible for fish management. Want some fish to eat? Keep the medium ones not the big breeders.

@@The-Capitalist Clueless to the abundance of how many fish are under the water ! You can't eat fish management ? Overpopulation can stunt the size of fish in a lake ( I have seen it ) !!! Are you one of those worried about our Ozone layer , or Global Warming too ? How many times a day do YOU flatulate ? My Idea of fish management is taking what you can eat, and not taking 20 or 50 fish at a time ! That's why they have CREEL LIMITS ! I also sink Christmas Tree's where I like to fish to attract habitat for BIG FISH ! I also pay for a fishing license ( multi-state } for more fish management DO YOU ???🐟🐟🐠🐠 If you like eating little fish, HAVE AT IT !

@@johnlukasik8045 It all depends on the size of the lake. Go ahead and make your joke and rude comments. If you feel better about yourself by “making fun” of someone on the internet with an opinion that’s on you. As a marine biologist I know about 10x you do and I’m not going to waste my time and argue with you. Good luck…

@@johnlukasik8045 Overpopulation and stunting is achieved when there is an overpopulation. However, keeping the biggest fish of the water will only hurt the population as the genetics will do down hill. Study prove that. Keeping the fish in the medium size category will help alleviate the competition for food and there will be an adequate amount of trophy fish in the water after time. That’s the goal of every fishery. The big ones keep the population going and the medium fish are for eating. Do some research next time.

Technology is taking away what makes fishing fun and not knowing what's down there is part of the fun. You never knew what you were going to catch and now you can tell what's species and how big before you set the hook. What's next a search and capture fish catching submarine? I'm joking, just saying it's getting crazy.

Right almost every video of how to find fish is basically have a live scope. I can't find anything on patterning them

Just because you know what’s down there doesn’t mean you’re going to catch anything. In fact, it takes a lot of discipline from an angler to not impart their poor judgments onto a particular fish when they can see the fishes reactions in real-time. Everyone thinks they know how a scared baitfish acts or how a bug that weighs half a gram moves until a fish comes by and they spook it because your cadence sucks.
Livesscope is awesome for recon and research of lake attributes like bottom structure, weed edges, drop offs, and holes. If you really want to learn a lake, there isn’t really anything better at the moment.
Better tech doesn’t inherently make someone a better angler but a better angler can certainly benefit from the advantages that better tech provides. There’s much more that goes into catching fish than just knowing what they are and where their at. Don’t blame technology for dumbass people.

You can have the high tech garbage. The more stuff I acquire the less fish I catch. got way more fish on faith and patience..
