    Never was a great Mauger fan.... BUT that Pole got a rolling start!!! What a fiasco!

    It was an unlucky night for Mauger. According to one of his books, he had a freak engine problem in an earlier ride without for which there would have been no run-off. As far as I can remember, I don't think Szczakiel ever won anything else after this but his guardian angel was busy that night.

      Don't think it matters much if he never won as much as a league race in the Outback, the History Books will forever record that the Pole on Pol won the World Championship that year, and that's just the "Speedway God's" playing their fickle games with we mere mortals ... And Ivan Mauger!!

    Love these clips of yesteryear Martyn......Ivan was definitely at fault......no question there......but that has to be the biggest rolling start in history !.......the pole rode up to the starting gate and just kept going....the good old iron curtain was definitely at play....they wanted a world champion and they were going to get one......end of.

      Rolling starts were the norm then and every race was like this - in fact the roller here was mild by the standards of the time.
      Had it not been for starts such as these Briggs, Mauger and Olsen would not have won nearly so many titles- they were absolute masters of the roller.

      @@bosssuggs1 Not Ole Olsen. He was deeply concentrated, didn't roll, but Mauger, yes. This one was the worst and most clear rolling start I've ever senn, though.

    A standard start for back then BUT referee should of stopped the race and awarded it to the polish lad . If you dont agree just check out mauger ,lee,olsen,crump etc back then . Thanks martyn as always god knows where you get them but keep them coming .

    Mauger should have kept out wide in the dirt, clearly gaining speed and momentum and tried the pass a lap later with more speed, maybe Even passed on the outside

    Boo hoo, the Polish rider gained an advantage from a rolling start. Good to see Mauger getting a taste of his own medicine as he was THE worst culprit for rolling starts in those days and not in the same league as the likes of Collins at overtaking. Best thing that ever happened to the sport when the riders were made to sit still at the starting gate. Mauger would never have won as many World Finals if this had been the case in his day.

    Was the ref an Aussie? Cos these were the sort of biased rolling starts you used to see all the time out there...unless a Pom did one!

    No Mauger fan, but someone explain that start and why the race wasn't stopped! Hilarious when Szczakiel came round and took a wide turn to fill him in shale 🤣

    • @TheRip72
      @TheRip72 4 роки тому +2

      I agree on both counts. The start was awful. No time was given for the riders to raise their engine revs before the tapes were released. Not stopping the race with a fallen rider still down is appalling. If the race could not have been awarded then it would have been amusing to see Szczakiel effectively do 4 parade laps in the re-run.

      No idea how Jerzy managed to stay on. I reckon Ivan could have gone on the outside, and beat him easily. Anyway, history will show that , for once, Ivan cocked up big style! No complaint about the start - Ivan was imho one of the worst [ or best] rollers of all time! Good to see him get out smarted by the Poles - Jerzy, and could it have been prearranged with the referee??

  • @stephannickson3164

      Please stop lying about Ole Olsen - he didn't do this. Look at this heat for example, Mauger the rolling guy, Olsen at a total stand still. Who wins? OLe. Because he was simply better than Ivan. Just look at this one, and stop lying about Ole. I already corrected you twice in this video. Now look at this one:

    I have watched a video of this meeting and have never seen such ridiculous starting procedures in my life...blatant rolling nearly ever race along with unbelievable refereeing decisions ie the race that cost Plech a chance of victory as for Ivan in the run off he had the speed and went for it unfortunately he came unstuck...
