As much I loved the underlying saphic tenshion of their friendship, it was definitely hinted at since book one that their parents had a history together, which relates to them being sisters, like how callis said agathas father made a sacrifice for her, or the refrence to witch trials, or how callis said sophies dad had to pay a big price
