That's quite reductive to Gab Smolders who's a die hard fan of Chilla's Art games, and also understand Japanese and translates untranslated stuff for us as she plays. She deserves that title imo.
I think the Grandson looks a lot like the former leader to the Aum Shinrikyo cult with that beard and hair style in particular. Not sure if that's intentional, and if it is, what it's supposed to imply other than nothing good. It's interesting to me that the head almost doesn't seem to belong on the body with how wide it is, and how the body looks younger and thinner - although that could very well be because of how it's dressed. Of course, it's hard to tell in a video game if that's just supposed to be part of the creep-factor or if it's just how the model happened to be design. But it does sort of imply, to me, that the Grandson has been living there for a long time, even after his grandparents died. Also not sure if it's coincidence, inspiration, or homage, but there's a short film called My House Walk-Through that shares a lot of the same imagery and atmosphere, and that same sort of maze-like structure to the house. (Highly recommend a watch. You can find it on UA-cam!) Either way, it's very well done. My impression of the story is that the Grandson was either possessed himself from the start or was influenced by whatever was in that hole, either from the very beginning or as the story progressed. The main character being able to descend into the hole from which he was hearing the voice and not finding another entity waiting for him there, only another tape filmed from the Grandson's POV, definitely implies that it's either the Grandson himself or something that's possessed him. Going by the first video where the creature congratulates the Grandson on a job well done, definitely implies, to me, that it already had a hold on the house for a while, likely since before the Grandson even started filming. Overall, that's a detail that's probably not even that important in the grand scheme of things as the story focuses on witnessing the repercussions of how it came to be rather than whatever triggered it in the first place. However the evil entity arrived there, the Grandson definitely acted as a conduit.
Also, there's a lot to be said about the use of the black bars and censorship just as a tool for meta storytelling, but to me, it speaks to the idea that the Grandson may have had questionable interests from the start or was just outright repressed by his grandparents, leading to a hatred of them that resulted in either the cultivation of an evil spirit or the invitation to one. The treatment of the dolls, such as their heads falling off, or with plastic bags placed over them also definitely implies some manner of childhood abuse, or repression, particularly since, iirc, those types of dolls are often used in "Children's Day" celebrations. The part in particular where hundreds of them show up in the room, all with bags over their heads, is certainly a louder comment on the cult-like religious imagery and concepts found throughout the game.
Overall, I could probably write an essay on the layers of metaphor used here, and so I enjoyed this very much. It talked a lot about death while not relying a lot on body horror which is refreshing to me. Your character is even killed off screen, which was also very creepily well done, IMHO. And honestly I loved the concept of the censorship bar "glitches", to me that was the creepiest part of the game. lol I also liked how the game doesn't spoon feed you every detail, albeit, some parts could have been more clearly conveyed for sure. There was clearly a lot of attention paid to the sound design as well, which definitely can make or break a good horror game (in my opinion anyway).
Thank you for playing this! I'm really enjoying your choice of horror games, especially since it seems like a lot of the ones you pick have been really good, but also ones I haven't seen other UA-camrs playing, which is a real shame.

This was super realistic to what Japanese countryside feels like! Which made it even creepier… Even that giant Tanuki (that creepy looking raccoon dog) statue is a really common thing you’ll see.
The place in the video also looks similar to some abandoned houses and areas in Southeast asia ( i remember ive seen it sometimes in Thailand and vietnam, i grew up in those 2 countries). Very creepy indeed especially at night… Ofcourse the architecture isnt the same as ,for example, sweeping doors arent commonly used there and wont have figures like the tanuki. I did see only once a place like with a old maneki neko with its winking arm in a old house in thailand ( ofcourse already damaged).
for those curious: jisatsu actually means suicide「自殺」but if you take the word "selfie"「自撮り」which reads "jidori" and remove the り "ri" it reads "jisatsu" just like the game's title「自撮」

Definitely an uneasy game. But it just seemed underdeveloped. I didn’t like when it goes all black to load the next “chapter”. It would’ve added more immersion if it had seamless transitions. I also didn’t like the solid black boxes that seemed to be covering faces or objects. Not sure if that was intentional or a bug, but it was confusing and didn’t add to the level of fear. Overall, I’d give this a 5.4/10. Spooky and nerve wracking, but could be improved upon.

It was good but honestly wasn't as good as you'd expect a chilla's art game to be. Had very few jumpscares, now I am not saying that jumpscares are the only criteria at rating a horror game but even the "eerieness" Was absent for me. Last game was a mid too. It was the second last one that really astonished me and I would say that I liked the most

I think the grandson is just the one hearing things, he killed his grandparents, while the guy was exploring the house he was the one moving the statues, mannequins, dolls the shadows.. and in the end he killed the boss

thought it was just me! 😭 i think from where he has the light in his face cam it may have made it look like a hand but us, the audience, cannot see it! lol.
