Over the past few years, there has been a great revolution in the world of automotive. There is a wave of cars being released to compete in different markets. Some of the top cars to be released are crossovers and SUVs. They are being released in plenty. However, pickup trucks are also on the rise nowadays, with automakers releasing new pickup trucks every now and then. The Chinese giant, BYD, has come out with a new pickup truck, which goes by the name Shark. And just as the name suggests, it is as intimidating as it sounds. But does the 2024 BYD Shark have what it takes to be at the top of the category? Let’s find out, shall we?

The 2024 BYD Shark pickup is finally here. And from what we have seen, this is a plug-in hybrid pickup truck that every automaker is already fearing. The Chinese giant automaker, BYD, has finally unveiled its first-ever pickup truck, which has been dubbed Shark. This happened at an exclusive event in Mexico City sometime in May. In fact, this was the first time that the automaker has made a global debut outside of China. This just speaks to the importance that Mexico plays for the automaker’s future. And this goes on even with all the controversy that exists concerning the emergence of Chinese EVs in North America.
Just by looking at it, the design of the 2024 BYD Shark can be described as a bit masculine. And well, let’s just say that it does look intimidating. The new pickup truck was designed by Wolfgang Egger, BYD’s global design director. Let’s just say that having worked at Alfa Romeo, Audi, and Lamborghini, Wolfgang went all out to give the Shark a bold overall design with masculine and boxy lines.
Inside, the 2024 BYD Shark bears multiple colors to highlight some of the cabin’s design features. The rectangular air vents and some toggle switches in the center console are painted orange, with contrast stitching on the seats, dashboard, and door panels. There is also a chunky shifter that stands out in the center console, as well as a tray on the front passenger’s dashboard that can be used to place smaller items such as a wallet or keys.
To add some more flare to the already amazing design, there is a rotative 12.8-inch screen that is the star of the show. If you have kept track of some of the cars from BYD, such as the Yuan Plus and the Seal, it is the same screen.
This is truly an amazing car. But at this point, you may be wondering: What exactly does it have to offer under the hood? I mean, it looks amazing and has some amazing tech, but it is the powertrain that makes or breaks it.
Under its hood, the 2024 BYD Shark is powered by a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that is mated to two electric motors. With this setup, the truck is capable of making about 430 horsepower. However, the automaker never revealed its torque capabilities. Nonetheless, BYD has said that the plug-in hybrid truck will be capable of towing up to about 5,511 pounds, which is about 2,500 kg. Not only that, but it will also have a payload capacity of about 1,841 pounds, which is about 835 kg. The automaker also went on to assure everyone that the truck can go from 0 to 62 mph in about 5.7 seconds, which is pretty impressive for a pickup truck of its size.
The Shark will have an EV-only range of about 62 miles, all thanks to its 30-kWh blade battery. On the other hand, when it has a full tank and a charged battery, it can go up to 528 miles.
To learn more about some of its capabilities, we will have to wait until we get behind the wheel to check them out. Not only that, but it is only until that happens that we will be able to compare it against other midsize tricks in the segment. However, so far, it seems very promising, and it will definitely give trucks like the Ford F-150 Raptor a good run for their money.
