Exactly - and the tracking info they get from your system is more valuable to them than the loss of the retail key sale - so they could care less where you got the key from as long as you connect your system to their servers. These type of key resellers have been around since window 3.1 - figure on windows 7 the way the OEM keys were setup was each pre-built PC actually came with 2 valid keys that could be used on 2 systems ( 1 was for the individual machine and attached to the pre-built case to be used if you ever had to reinstall the software from scratch but was normally never actually used since the OEM had their own bulk key they used to activate all of their systems as they were built - so 3rd party companies that refurbished off lease systems just resold those keys since 99%+ of those keys were never used and any that had been that did not properly activated were just tossed out and you given another if you called them after buying to say it would not work.) So they had millions of keys that were never used. ( I remember going to a retail store a few times when needing a key and just copying the key off of the certificate on a display laptop or desktop and going home and entering it to activate systems when I couldn't afford to buy a license and never had problems activating it - and as the support rep said in this video once it is activated on their server it will stay activated for that system for life.)

Recently phone activated a win10 key purchased on a key sales site(cdkoffers). It was a verified end user retail key.
The first thing the CSR asked was where I got the key(without being told any information, so he didn't know anything about the key except that it was win 10 home).
It IS in their script somewhere, but I think it's in relation to volume and OEM licenses for tracking. M$ does not want those being sold as retail keys

The bottom line with Microsoft support is that they want users to be happy with Windows, so if you have an activated Windows, they aren't going to rock the boat even if they suspect an inappropriate license. They prefer to fight the scam at the seller level rather than the user level. However, it seems they have revoked some volume licenses that were heavily abused in the past.
Generally in my experience, Windows 7 Professional keys included on business computers don't have any OEM restrictions and will work on any PC as a legitimate Windows 10 license. If a Windows 7 licensed computer is dead, you can usually use its license elsewhere. Just watch out for accidentally using the same key on more than one computer because you forgot that you were using it elsewhere. If a key has the letters "OEM" as part of the key, then it won't be transferable to a different system (though I haven't seen any Windows 7 Pro keys that were like this, but that doesn't mean they couldn't exist).
Incidentally, I usually use Linux, which is one way to avoid issues with licenses, but sometimes there are reasons to use Windows or a Windows VM, so I am on the lookout for Windows 7 Professional keys that can be reused for Windows 10 (or occasionally a 7 install for some odd reason).

Basically that. Microsoft doesn't do anything even against piracy since, I think, 2011 (when they released a small anti piracy update for windows 7).
Windows 8 cracks work on w10 without issues, that's just hilarious. And there are some cracks out that basically generate undistinguishable digital liceses by registering the mobo at MS's servers. Even with a new HDD its then still activated. It's ridiculous that something like this works since YEARS.
The reason is most likely, as you said, they still make money from the pirated installs.

There is zero chance that some dude in an Indian call centre has access to the back-end services to verify validity of Windows keys anyway - that's why he was basically saying "dude if it activated for you.. then you know as much as I know about your key. i guess its fine *shrug*".
The real test for this would be to email Microsoft and ask them for confirmation that these keys are correctly (legally) licensed for use in Australia.
Spoiler: they would likely say NO, because COST price for a key in Australia from an OEM distributor is circa $150.
That said - these are still 'genuine' Microsoft Win 10 retail keys of course, just not licensed for distribution to the Australian market - eg: grey market imports. As with most other products, I doubt that would be an impact for 99% of users.

From what I read on a similar video to this years ago, a court case in Germany decided that CD keys on Steam could be resold. However, this ruling also ended up applying to any software using keys, including Windows. If you look into sites like SCDkey, you'll find they are based out of Germany and this court ruling is the main reason why. I have used SCDkey several times over the years for myself, friends, and family... I have never had a problem with one of their keys activating and have ALWAYS received retail copies of Windows even though I purchased OEM keys. It is generally recommended that you attach the computers to a Microsoft account so that Windows license becomes associated with your account, that way the keys can't be resold to someone else a 2nd time.. but I have never had issues with SCDKey.

The only real money Microsoft makes money nowadays via the keys, is selling the volume licences to businesses.
They're so heavily focused on cloud services (and games etc) that anyone buying an individual key is just a benefit now rather than a key source of income. I think it was best demonstrated by the free upgrade to Windows 10

Microsoft main business and profit is on cloud and enterprise products. Most businesses uses Microsoft products and services including Office 365, Windows Server and other Microsoft solutions. Then they buy PC's in bulk, which is already licensed with Windows, heck businesses may still buy volume license for Windows 10 enterprise.
On consumer, Xbox Live is still a king for them, and with xCloud and Gamepass, they are just securing their profit margins even they don't sell much hardware.
I think people actually buying retail copy of Windows is pretty much insigficant for them. Majority of Windows profit already comes from pre-built PC's anyways. So users already been paying Windows everytime they buy a new PC.
About ads, this is least of their businesses considering how Bing is way behind Google Search. They don't really get much money from there and don't have to care much considering how profitable their cloud services anyways. The telemetry they collect is already been a thing way back, usually for purposes of improvements for their own products and services. Others will be for their Microsoft Store, which is not an unusual practice and that is only still even not that much different from let's say Apple whose main business are selling hardware and services.
Google and Facebook are the one will get their revenue from ads and other personalised info. Since most of their services are free. Google at least sells hardware, but that is still on smaller scale as compared to Apple. Well at least Google do make money from Google Play licenses everytime OEM's needs Google Play Store for their Android device. Google dont make money directly from Android, but Google Play does.

From that call with the support I can tell one of two things:
    1) microsoft don't care
    2) the support guy is simply clueless and don't know a lot about those things and is giving you the simplest answer he can find in his database of faqs.
Think about it, you showed that using a multiple activate key is illegal outside the organization, but if you still activate a home pc with it, it will activate fine. Then it's not simply "if it activated then it's fine". So either they don't actually care the key is MAK, or the dude had no idea about the legal part of this issue. He is probably there to mainly tell people how to reach certain setting in the control panel...

I would like this to be researched further. My concern would be buying a Windows license that is stolen.
Years ago, I did some research and according to Microsofts own website, there are Window keys that are blacklisted because they have been stolen from Microsoft servers. So once installed, eventually your copy of Windows will be useless.
But here we are, where Windows 10 is free and fully functional, minus the watermark. But if you wanted that watermark gone, you have 2 options, pay for a key or find a program that will simply take the watermark away. I've come across such a program before, but never used it.
But the problem with buying a key is, you want it to be legit, as not to feel like a "pirate". Now buying a copy of Windows retail is expensive. So people tend to turn to Ebay or wherever they can to get it as cheap as possible. But there are those looking to take advantage.
Which is why Windows 10 was free in the first place. To stop pirated copies. Anywho, so it would be interesting to see if blacklisted copies of Windows are being sold on any website. And if there is a list of authorized sellers/resellers that one can view. I know alot of software companies give money to people that report those that sell pirated copies of their products.
So the last question is, why, if the keys are legit on Ebay and other sites, then why does Microsoft and other websites still sell retail keys at retail price?

There are two different types of OEM keys. Firstly are the OEM keys embedded into the motherboard of the laptop or desktop by the manafacturer the name will be [ OEM_DM channel ], this key cant be transfered to a new pc. Secondly there is another OEM key with a cd and COA, the name of this OEM will be [OEM_COA_NSLP], this key can be transfered to a new pc like the retail, but the only limitation about this second OEM version is that, its only available in certain countries due to its consumer rights law
The common OEM keys are SLP [ SYSTEM LOCK INSTALLATION] which does not need a key when installing windows, the second one is NSLP [ NON SYSTEM LOCK INSTALLATION] which acts like the retail.

Retail keys, while being sold for money yes, don't actually COST windows anything to make. It doesn't cost them anything other than paying someone to develop the key. So, They can often sell keys like this in bulk to large corporations who need thousands of computers. Windows sells them keys at an extremely liquidated price like $5/per at 2000 quantity. Windows makes 10k in a second and that company uses maybe 1000 of the 2000 keys. It works out for windows because they make 10k, and it works out for the company because they get 1000 computers operating windows for 5k when if they were to buy individual keys for each it would cost waaay more. They then just sell the extra keys off to a guy in his garage who redistributes them for cheap! Think of it as just buying a "used" key that was never used.

Since we use these persistent elements that transition across pages to indicate some kind of relationship between the previous and the next states, some of your transitions confuse me because I can't immediately see what the relationship is.
For example 2:23 of the selectable tiles (which weren't selected) transition into being two switches... does that mean anything? are they related in some way? I see this as random and a bad use of the design language. However, at 1:14 I like the transition from switches to the ticks on a paper, that makes sense to me. Epic presentation tho

The issue with gray/grey market keys is how they're obtained; it is NOT about if they work or not. Gray market keys are generally speaking "legit" in the sense of them being real keys however the big difference is that the way they're obtained is usually by means of a stolen credit card or stolen from a legitimate purchase. While this is mostly about game keys, Polygon made an in-depth article about it back in 2015 where they directly interviewed the people they were getting their keys from: www.polygon.com/2015/2/9/8006693/the-truth-behind-those-mysteriously-cheap-gray-market-game-codes
Moreover, there are multiple videos online, especially from Inside Gaming who did a similar deep dive into this subject, that explain further about how these keys are generally not obtained via legal means.
I genuinely love your stuff Bryan, but this has been a sticking point with me for a while now. I know you mean well but gray market resellers are notorious for promoting criminality like this purely from their own business model. From a purely logical standpoint, how else are they able to get _this_ many keys at such a low price point? Microsoft doesn't just send out keys for cheaper like this even when you account regional price differences.
Finally, I just want to be clear that if you wanted to do a video like this, then you need to make sure you have as little conflicts of interest as possible. Having the very thing you're investigating sponsor you like this is arguably the single greatest conflict of interest you can have. If there's money being exchanged or even communication with the person you're investigating while under the umbrella of creating a promotion out of it, then it cannot be neutral in any way. I truly believe you did this out of a sense of trying to help people but what you're promoting is genuinely harmful when it comes to supporting criminality with these keys. It isn't about cutting into microsoft's profits; it's about not letting people continue to get money by using these stolen cards or scamming methods.

It's not true for these keys (atleast I assume not). They're still not legit but they're so cheap because they're OEM licenses which Microsoft sells to OEMs and verified resellers for pennies per key in large volumes. The thing is that these resellers aren't supposed to be selling OEM licenses to individual end users. They're meant for system builders and, while they'll activate, unless you're building a system for the express purpose of selling it on (and in doing so becoming responsible for providing support to the end user instead of Microsoft, as per the system builder licensing) using these keys is a violation of the licensing agreement. Whether or not Microsoft actually gives a shit is another thing entirely.
