What a great lesson using pictures in magazines. My initial thought was to just talk about what was in the photo. But this method, to make stories from the picture, really helps bring the language to life. Great job !
I applied to be an Assistant Language Teacher of English here in Japan, and currently I'm attending the company training sessions. Not one iota of this method has been mentioned. They frequently have us break into groups to practice the "traditional" methods and it almost gives me a headache. I did, however, seize an opportunity to freestyle this method with a partner today, and I thought it was extremely effective, to say nothing of its entertainment value. It will take some practice to master, but I can't wait to try it in my classes. I just hope my partner teachers are willing to go for it- it's a pretty conservative culture over here. Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication.
Cool. Good job. Go to a TPRS workshop ASAP. Traditional methods don't work and they are torture. Most Japanese people from Japan I know in the USA speak horrendous English.

That's exactly why I made this video. Get a magazine picture. Create a crazy story. Add at least one or two celebreties and you've got your story. Then have your language partner retell you the story several times. I do this after I have acquired about 100 words or about the second week.

I live here in Arizona and when I hear a Mexican person speak English to me how broken-up it is and using present tense for future tense and vice versa it doesn't bother me in the least because I understand. And I think when I speak French the same thing happens and I don't think it bothers people either. I think it's about talking and not being afraid to make mistakes. I would say to anybody trying to learn a language and being afraid to talk, just remember when you talk to people that do not speak English very well but yet you understand them, it doesn't bother you and you should think of that every time you speak a foreign language to somebody whose native tongue that is.

All right that's my case with Japanese: I've tried to consciously learn it by using traditional methods, but to no avail. Since I came across Krashen's theory of comprehensible input, I've been consistently exposing myself to the language through UA-cam videos - shoutout to Japanese Immersion With Asami - and TV shows that I've previously watched - that means that I already have a priori knowledge of what's happening, so I just need to associate new language with what's going on the screen. I'd highly recommend that you learn the top 10 most used verbs in Mandarin and look for teachers who use the natural approach on UA-cam. I think that breaking through the initial barrier is the most challenging one for every single language student. but once you go past through it, it's smooth sailing.

Or did I misunderstand and you repeat it three times each with a three day interval? And how do you repeat it? Once where she just tells it and you listen, with the occasional repeating of a word, or your active engaging 'really'? Thank you in advance for your answer
okay so just to clarify. Step 1) tell a crazy story in English (or i'm assuming the language that is both shared) Step 2) have the teacher repeat the story in the target language Step 3) while story is being retold, ask clarifying questions in target language or English step 4) teacher answers in target language and adds additional details. step 5) repeat is that about the gist of TPRS? I want to implement this; however, both myself and my partner are unfamiliar with this method.
Exactly. You got it! But I only use English about 10-20% of the time. I try and stay in the target language. 1. Make story together in target language. Try and use as little English as possible. 2. Your teacher retells you the story. 3. Your teacher asks you questions about the story. (Retell 2).
This is impressive! Even if all one does is just watch the video, quite a bit can be readily acquired. But still as TPR stresses, some physical engagement is required at some point of the listener. Persian is beautiful. That's one reason I would like to learn it.

How do you suggest going about this (meaning without a constant instructor)? Also, when you are trying to learn the vocab you were exposed to here, how do you do it without "memorizing" it?
Maybe searching for some toddlers/childrens cartoons on UA-cam made for native speakers (without subtitles). I currently learn japanese with this kind of videos. They are very comprehensible, you build up your vocabulary and mostly they are fun to watch. The videos are mostly not longer then 5 minutes. You can look up words in an online dictionary. I watch 60 minutes of this and then I switch to adult/teen content for more input (not for vocab in the first place but for intonation and speaking speed). I think this is a great way if you don't have a language parent.

Well, he is creating a story and she is translating it for him into Farsi so he can learn Farsi. In no way she is cocreating the story with him as to everything she suggests he says no. Lol. But that is alright. Thank you for teaching me this method. Great teaching style, very intense but worthwhile doing.
Yes. In any session of say 2 hours, I hear about 50 new words. Since this is Farsi, at the end of the day, I remember (own) about 5 of them (10%). If this were say, German, I'd remember about 15 of them, French, Portuguese, probably 20 of them.

Why would that be better or helpful in the learning process? Is it because choosing himself, it makes it easier to remember/acquire those new words? Trying to get the though process, so I can repeat this process at home:)

I have to use English to set up the story because my teacher is not a trained TPRS instructor while I am. Normally I would use very little English but I allow students to yell out suggestions in English while we're setting up the story. If you look at the entire video we speak about 90% target language.
I concur with Poly-glot-a-lot. In phase 1, he helps her set up the story by guiding her & asking questions or suggesting information to create the story. Remember, he is versed in TPRS, the young woman is learning the TPRS method. (Even though she is teaching him Farsi.) In phase 2, the story line is set and now it becomes more of a story-like recount of what happened in Farsi. The young woman recounts the story in Farsi and he acknowledges he understands or asks for clarification in Farsi. Well done! I have seen a few of your clips but I still find it a bit hard to grasp what it is that you are doing. I imagine that when you set out to "acquire" a new language, you have some kind of strategy or a plan on how to do it. Like before each meeting with your so called "language parent", I suspect that you have prepared what words you intend to learn. So you set the expectation to learn 3.5 words per hour and you have the expectation to have repeated each of these words about 40 times before you can say that you have properly acquired that word. Let's say that each meeting with the language parent is for 1 hour. During 15 minutes of each session with the language parent, you try to focus on 3-4 words and make him or her say those words about 10 times. So for an hour, let's say that you focus on 14 words that you try to make the language parent say 10 times, and you record this into your cell foam. Then if you listen to that one hour recording three times, you will be sure to have learned these 14 words thoroughly, because each and every one of these words will have been repeated about 40 times each. So I assume, especially at the beginning that you will probably not understand 90% of the conversation, but that's ok because you are only focusing on those 14 words. Am I correct? But then if we look at the whole picture, how do you prepare for each meeting, and what words do you choose to focus on over the timeline from the beginning to the end? I understand that the first meeting involves colours and clothes, and then at some point you transition to storytelling. How do you know that you can start doing storytelling? At what point do you start trying to learn past, present and future, and how do you acquire that? At what point do you acquire acquire words that describe feelings, more abstract things like months, numbers, or what have you? I think you said that you do them all at once, but you must have some kind of sequence of themes and topics that you go through during each of these sessions with the language parent. Or, to put it shortly, given any time frame, be it half a year or a full year, or a number of meetings, how do you lay out your curriculum for acquiring that language? When do you do TRS and at what point do you do reading as input? Those things I do not understand from watching your UA-cam clips. Thanks.
Hello. NO. I do 2 hours with my language parent. During the first hour we concentrate on a magazine with lots and lots of pictures. During that hour, my teacher describes all of the pictures in the magazine and she asks me simple yes/no questions about the pictures in the magazine. Later, after I know about 100 words, we start making crazy stories (TPRS). We make a crazy story together. She retells me the crazy story. And, then she asks me questions about the crazy story. Plus, I audio record the stories with my mobile phone and listen to them again later on.

@@iberiuspred4906 I just guess. I do magazines for about two weeks. After two weeks of 8 hour per week I know about 100-200 words. At that point I start making stories. You can make stories on the first day if you like. I do stories in my Spanish class that I teach, on the first day and every day after that. I listen to one story per day outside of class.

It's a great method, but as a woman I pay attention to the girls body language. It may be cultural (I'm a native Finn), but I'm going to say it: I think you might be a little too much in her space. Notice how she leans back in the beginning of the video when you gesticulate a lot? I might be overly sensitive, as Finns tend to respect each others personal space and threfore pay a lot of attention to it. But it also might be due to the fact that she is a woman and you're a very confident older man who actively seeks eye contact, is very dominant (therefore communicates dominance) and gesticulates a lot into her direction. This would have me (as a woman) instantly guarded and therefore more closed-minded, very stressed and less creative - which is the opposite of what we want from a language partner, right? I am no-one to give suggestions, but I would not feel very comfortable with this and I think this is something male language learners should be mindful about, as they might lose a great language exchange partner without necessarily knowing why :)
Personal space is not a behavioral norm that is unique to Finnish sociology. It's still in common practice in many Northern and Central European cultures as well as American and Canadian. So, in that regard your statement is not entirely accurate. Now I could agree that where no prior relationship has existed it might seem inappropriate for an older man and a younger woman to participate in this exercise. That being said even if he had never indicated that there was an existing relationship, it was apparent from the body language that the exchange was platonic and non-threatening. Furthermore, gesturing is an important component of TPR. And even if that wasn't true, in many Middle Eastern cultures there is much physical expressiveness in the communication. I think that as you continue your studies and your journey into different languages and cultures that you will discover this for yourself. All the best to you.

I like 8 hours per week. Watch videos and read but only things you understand 90%. Record all of your stories and listen to them later by yourself.

I don't write any words. I hear them over and over. Memorization is a waste of time. It's all about constant repetition of high-frequency vocabulary.

I have seen a few of your clips but I still find it a bit hard to grasp what it is that you are doing.
I imagine that when you set out to "acquire" a new language, you have some kind of strategy or a plan on how to do it. Like before each meeting with your so called "language parent", I suspect that you have prepared what words you intend to learn.
So you set the expectation to learn 3.5 words per hour and you have the expectation to have repeated each of these words about 40 times before you can say that you have properly acquired that word. Let's say that each meeting with the language parent is for 1 hour. During 15 minutes of each session with the language parent, you try to focus on 3-4 words and make him or her say those words about 10 times. So for an hour, let's say that you focus on 14 words that you try to make the language parent say 10 times, and you record this into your cell foam. Then if you listen to that one hour recording three times, you will be sure to have learned these 14 words thoroughly, because each and every one of these words will have been repeated about 40 times each.
So I assume, especially at the beginning that you will probably not understand 90% of the conversation, but that's ok because you are only focusing on those 14 words. Am I correct?
But then if we look at the whole picture, how do you prepare for each meeting, and what words do you choose to focus on over the timeline from the beginning to the end? I understand that the first meeting involves colours and clothes, and then at some point you transition to storytelling. How do you know that you can start doing storytelling? At what point do you start trying to learn past, present and future, and how do you acquire that? At what point do you acquire acquire words that describe feelings, more abstract things like months, numbers, or what have you? I think you said that you do them all at once, but you must have some kind of sequence of themes and topics that you go through during each of these sessions with the language parent.
Or, to put it shortly, given any time frame, be it half a year or a full year, or a number of meetings, how do you lay out your curriculum for acquiring that language? When do you do TRS and at what point do you do reading as input? Those things I do not understand from watching your UA-cam clips.

Hello. NO. I do 2 hours with my language parent. During the first hour we concentrate on a magazine with lots and lots of pictures. During that hour, my teacher describes all of the pictures in the magazine and she asks me simple yes/no questions about the pictures in the magazine. Later, after I know about 100 words, we start making crazy stories (TPRS). We make a crazy story together. She retells me the crazy story. And, then she asks me questions about the crazy story. Plus, I audio record the stories with my mobile phone and listen to them again later on.

@@iberiuspred4906 I just guess. I do magazines for about two weeks. After two weeks of 8 hour per week I know about 100-200 words. At that point I start making stories. You can make stories on the first day if you like. I do stories in my Spanish class that I teach, on the first day and every day after that. I listen to one story per day outside of class.

In TPRS using English to set up the story is totally acceptable. I know. i used to be 100% no English. Now I use English to set up TPRS stories.

It's a great method, but as a woman I pay attention to the girls body language. It may be cultural (I'm a native Finn), but I'm going to say it: I think you might be a little too much in her space. Notice how she leans back in the beginning of the video when you gesticulate a lot? I might be overly sensitive, as Finns tend to respect each others personal space and threfore pay a lot of attention to it. But it also might be due to the fact that she is a woman and you're a very confident older man who actively seeks eye contact, is very dominant (therefore communicates dominance) and gesticulates a lot into her direction. This would have me (as a woman) instantly guarded and therefore more closed-minded, very stressed and less creative - which is the opposite of what we want from a language partner, right? I am no-one to give suggestions, but I would not feel very comfortable with this and I think this is something male language learners should be mindful about, as they might lose a great language exchange partner without necessarily knowing why :)
Otherwise great video and very inspiring! I'll try this method with my next language for sure.
This woman is my friend. I think if you have a friend teaching you language, the closer the better.
Personal space is not a behavioral norm that is unique to Finnish sociology. It's still in common practice in many Northern and Central European cultures as well as American and Canadian. So, in that regard your statement is not entirely accurate. Now I could agree that where no prior relationship has existed it might seem inappropriate for an older man and a younger woman to participate in this exercise. That being said even if he had never indicated that there was an existing relationship, it was apparent from the body language that the exchange was platonic and non-threatening. Furthermore, gesturing is an important component of TPR. And even if that wasn't true, in many Middle Eastern cultures there is much physical expressiveness in the communication. I think that as you continue your studies and your journey into different languages and cultures that you will discover this for yourself. All the best to you.
