Thanks for loading this. The American flag blowing over an abandoned town was pretty damn disturbing. We can only hope it's not foreshadowing more to come.
Jimmy, THANK YOU BIG TIME for showing some of the places in MY HOME TOWN, the ole Star theater, Hoppies past time pool, the tri-state tribune, Joyce's dairyette, Landis Steel, Harry's shoe store, and that is a new School building, it used to be a two story one, and the T&I Auto, and Wood Shop Building, they actually went out and did a yearly project of building a house, Charlie Jones was the wood teacher and Fred Osborne was the automotive teacher, this video REALLY BROUGHT BACK SOME REALLY FOND AND GREAT MEMORIES, I just wished that you could have said what streets that you were on, like the school is on A Street, and the Tri-state Tribune and the new Post Office was on Connell Avenue, I didn't see you on Main Street, it was two blocks to the west of Connell Avenue, you could have turned at the stop sign and went by the jail house and fire station going west on 3rd. Street and went by Main and seen Livingston's Clothing, and Osborne Drug, Lion's Supply an automotive store, several bar's and a laundry, and grocery store, pawn shop, Ed Waters Auto and Salvage and the City Park, which had a basketball ball and a tennis court in it, and the little league baseball diamond was on the east side of the park and the chat pile beside the park was known as Skyline Drive, because you could drive your car up to the top and it circled around, and you could see for miles and of a night time on the fourth of July you could see the fire works for miles, like Miami and Baxter Springs Ks., but like I said this video brought back good memories but the people just wasn't around any more and that's what REALLY HURTS, all of the friendly people that you ran across, because you knew everybody, the town was only about 2200 hundred people then, quite a bit smaller than the mining days when it was around 17,000 people, and it was a booming place, it had all of the big stores back then like Sears and Montgomery Wards, JC Penneys and an awful lot of bar's so you know that there was a lot of fights every night, but there's not a lot of things in PICHER now, the county barn is one, they moved over from Quapaw, and of course the tribe got the land back and now they are cleaning it all up or at least they are trying and doing the best that they can, and it's going to take a quite a few years to get it back like it was, but they are making some head way at it, and they are creating some job's also while cleaning it up, they are a REALLY GREAT GROUP OF PEOPLE TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH AND TOO WORK FOR, it's just bad that it had to happen this way, BECAUSE AN AWFUL LOT OF PEOPLE'S LIVES GOT HURT AND RUINED, BUT THAT IS THE STUPID GOVERNMENT FOR YOU
Thank you Gary, I’m truly tickled that it managed bringing back some fond memories. I would have gotten far more footage had I known it’s was going away as fast as it did. Only back when I was trying to get the footage you see here it was actually kind of tricky not getting hassled for simply being in the area. At the time they where having some issues with people going into the buildings & scraping the wire by destroying them inside. With that just being caught in the area would put you on a kind of local watch list that I really didn’t want to be involved with. After all, at that point it had become tied up in partly being federal property with possible federal charges for trespassing. As I’m sure your aware that not something anyone’s looking to be involved with. Heck, it’s still covered with (federal property no trespassing) signs on the fences & they’ve put concrete barriers across several of the side roads. I’d spent time in the area as a kid spending summers with my grandparents during the 80s & at that time the chat piles had become an attraction for the off road motorcycles & early ATV’s. Heck, I remember going into a motorcycle race shop in Minneapolis where the owner had jars of dirt from what they claimed where the best riding spots in America. I was stunned seeing a canning jar of chat & framed photos around it showing Pitcher/Cardin below the piles saying it was in their top 5 for best rides in the country. Now the closest you’ll get is across the line into Kansas back in the old scales area. BTW, funniest Fourth of July of my life was on those piles! Top of the tallest chat pile at the time, one wrong move with a bottle rocket that ended up in the fireworks box, & half dozen of us tumbling down in an attempt to escape. Again, SO glad knowing it brought back some good memories for you.
And, the sad thing in my experience is that I personally know one of the last residents of that town. She's a really nice person, so, I can only imagine the heartbreak she feels about not ever being able to go home where she grew up. Her life was basically commandeered by the Oklahoma, and maybe the federal, government. All the town folk were hijacked of their lives and heritage.
Wow! Loved this video! Thank you. Your delivery was paced and easy to listen to. I love videos having to do with abandoned towns, communities, etc.... Please make more.
The State of Florida has even more ghost towns, whats worse is they are all brand new! Brand new homes homes built in 2007 and never bought ,never occupied! Its what happens when greedy developers over build beyond demand thinking the markets there and the economic infrastructure is not! Worse yet the Banks supported them!
Florida has had several such boom and busts driven by land & housing speculation. In the 1920's i think there was one, caused by developers hyping swampy 'to-be towns.'...
I just drove through Picher at the end of 2014 and literally everything is gone. Like the author said, it is amazing how fast a town will deteriorate when the people leave. A native American tribe bought the government housing and the school, so they are still standing. The only other place with activity was the pharmacy, who has remained open despite the abandonment. Very eerie, but I wish I could've drove through int 2010 like you did.
Drove up there today to see it-enjoyed your video. It was a very interesting experience, also went to Zincville, Treece Kansas and some other little abandoned towns in the area. Super nice mini vacation!
Thanks for sharing this. I didnt think about what it looked like in the neighborhoods. I saw a PBS documentary about this town right before it was abandon.
This is so cool to get the actual footage of what really happens across America. You will never see Uncensored shooting like this on the 6:00 news due to the news only showing what's already been edited. Thankfully they haven't overthrown our ability to post vids on UA-cam. Yet.
I've seen the documentary about Picher, Oklahoma. It focuses on the learning problems certain residents were experiencing with their kids (due to lead exposure); the futile efforts by the government to try to clean the town up; and the widespread discontent concerning what people were being offered for their homes. The gigantic sink holes full of rust-colored watered (the same water that's in the river) were incredible. As were the toxic chat(?) piles the children habitually played on.
Thank you for the comment. The reason for tarp's n things of that nature is that #1 the buy out had just happened & prior to that there was a HUGE twister that damaged a good part of the town. So may have been left. Or #2 a good part of the homes had been sold to be moved and it could have been put up while getting the home ready for transport.
Yes this is really a taxpayer bailout. Instead of letting the people sue the corporation for the land becoming depreciated due to mining underneath. The government bailed the corporation out and satisfied the home owners with Taxpayer money.
Thanks for replying. I am still pretty amazed about such a strange situation. reminds me of a town I drove through in Northern Ontario, except it was much older , and the buildings more rundown. I wonder if there are many more towns like that. If people could see this instead of television, they would realize that all is not all well, and maybe put pressure on their local politicians to effect change.
OMFG, that town is cuter than any part of my Mexico could ever be in 50 years. I am so jealous. I would love to be in a town like that. Now that would be peaceful.
wow thats awful.i live in Rhode Island we dont get to see things like this so i appreciate these videos.its sad to see what is going on in other parts of the country but its something that needs to be for sure
That's a great question. But now that you mention it I've never seen a graveyard of any size there. Either I'm blind & don't pay attention. Or it's possible they didn't continue a graveyard in the immediate area for very long because of all the mining. Short answer, I really don't know.
@voiceman1234 Your welcome, Yes I live near there & sorry to say they started demo this week. From what I understand everything is going to be leveled and gone by Feb 15th 2011. I took a drive there yesterday and able to say it's near 60% gone as of then. Plus we have had wildfires going nut's around there over the last 2 days & I cant see the fire fighters risking life to save a unit that set for demo in a matter of hours. If the fires make it in I will try to get some video of it.
I was just thru Pitcher, OK in October and you are right there is very little left of the town. There are only a few buildings here and there and at the time I visited, one building was being torn down. I can remember back in the early 80's when Pitcher still had some life in it. I am interested in knowing something. Was the tornado you referred to part of the same storm system that destroyed part of Joplin, or was it another? I am glad you filmed that, very interesting to see that. Thx!
That is crazy! How long ago did the last of the people leave? And how many miles is the closest town? Great video, would love to go their if I was close.
Thank you for this video, it's amazing. I am hoping they don't level the town/neighborhoods too soon, I am trying to plan a trip out there to explore (from CA). Do you live around there? Is it still pretty much the same as it was 6 months ago? Keep up the good work, this is amazing.
@Noblehammer16 I know, but there where other people driving around at the time. Plus the town sits on the OK KS state line. So state police & sheriffs office will sit on side street now and then for a speed trap.
Thank you for watching. There was a tornado that ripped the town apart inside that 2 year window of Google earth & my footage. Then just a few weeks after I shot this crew's came in & moved what homes could be salvaged. At this point there's only a handful of buildings left & it's nothing like what's shown in this video. Again TY for watching & the comment.
I'd say not, considering there are still giant mounds of the hazardous minerals they mined out around there. And according to wikipedia, its still owned by the EPA due to the hazardous conditions.
The gooberment said that the ground was not safe because of contamination from the lead & zinc mining. That along with the ground being unstable from spiderwebs of mines underneath that made it prone for sink-holes. This was a battle that had be going for decades before it finally happened.
There have been a few major systems that have hit the area in the last few years. The most destructive tornado was in the summer of 08. But there was a smaller one in 10 that also did some damage. Thank goodness we only saw the storm side of the Joplin tornado. But I do have some Joplin tornado videos in my uploads. Back in the 70's&80's it was an off-roaders boom-town/paradise with people from all over the country coming in to play on the chat piles. Fun times back in the day!!
I lived in Picher when the tornado hit on May 10th. We lost all of our belongings. We now live in Dallas,Tx and have family and friends that were affected by the May 2013 tornadoes,
@67DieHardPatriot454 It's like a nuclear fall out. Because you cant see it doesn't mean it isn't there. Plus the ground in VERY unstable. Almost everywhere there are underground mine-shaft's that can cave in at any time. To give you an idea of just how mined out it is. Around 70% of the lead used by the American side in WW1 came from these mines.
I was just there December 2011. I too saw the pack dogs. My brother and I (who grew up there) felt like an evil eerie presence there. We had parked my car and walked around for about 1/2 hour. Within minutes of getting in my car a pack of 2 dogs chased after my truck. I wonder what goes on there at night. We also saw an old TV full of bullet holes, probably kids target practicing on the TV. Makes me very sad, the entire town is gone. According to the Miami PD about 7 people still live there.
Picher vs. "Pitcher", friend. Isn't there also a Pritcher, OK? How far is this from Miami and Quapaw? Sad. Thanks for video taping and sharing, though.
At least the local got a check from Uncle Sugar. Such toxic areas should be abandoned becaus they are too large to remediate. the US has enormous amounts of space, and there is no housing shortage excepting a very few expensive locations. Lead is incredibly nasty and if I found out my property was contaminated I'd be gone like a rocket with or without compensation.
LMAO, google street view is SO out of date that they are showing my driveway with a car that I sold over four years ago. At this point over 90% of whats in this video is no longer there. Saying nothing for the fact that it was just days ago picher Oklahoma as a town was UN-incorperated & dissolved.
Yes, today it's not much more then a grid of roads with overgrown grass between them. Maybe the odd home here and there. But nothing like what I showed here.
Sorry, but today it's nothing like the video. The majority of the homes ended up being torn down & what could be salvaged ended up being moved. Today it's just a grid of streets & overgrown grass.
@drchancellor This had nothing what so ever to do with banks or foreclosures . This was a gooberment buy out because of the health hazards from decades of lead mining in the area.
there is a small drive thru town on us 6 between rhode island and connecticut that at least years ago looked fairly abandoned. not sure if it was only a section of a town or what.
@pastorgeorgem I will never forget the big one. My house at the time was by the airport and goodrich. So i had a clear view standing in my front yard. It was like someone turned on a big vacuum in the sky and all the clouds started getting sucked that way. It was the strangest thing to see.
Nice vid. Somehow i find it interesting to see all these abondoned places back over there in the US, a real storyteller of what's going on econimically speaking. Just recently saw a doc about historic US defense and it's wide range of "hidden" bunkers, stretching from 50s till the frightened nighmare of today. The stupidity amount billions of dollars been, being spent! It Wouldn't surprise me to see ALOT more of this in a near future.. we'll see how that goes
the town was officially closed / bought out several years ago. if I'm not mistaken about a year prior to the date of the video being posted. yes there were a lot of cases of cancer in the town and surrounding towns as well as a lot ( politically correct) people born with special needs from the area.
@msamour The town is not locked down in any way what so ever. So seeing cars on the streets isn't that rare. As far as when the people left. Well, that has been a ongoing battle over many years now. I think it was around a year ago that everyone but two people had left. At the same time this was a buyout and the GOV was handing out check's to the people for their homes. So it's not like they just got a notice to leave. For that matter many ppl saw WAY over market value for the homes they left
I would like to know the stats on people who lived there and who got cancer/birth defects. Would also be curious about the small companies who polluted the land, if the EPA invested any amount of time in fining them for toxins. Toxins do not just disappear..any info on towns nearby?
I'm sure it has already been mentioned - about the bright & shiny american flag waving away in the vid @ 3:24-:29. And the fact that it's gov't owned property......tornado went through, etc....totally abandoned? hmmmm. Something is still there. I think the fire dept is still harboring activity. :) Cool video, Thanks.
Other agencies use the same X nomenclature because it is simple to sight-read without stopping, and its universal. Also, the caps lock key works both ways, in case you didn't know that either.
I lived not far from Pitcher Okla. in the 60's some of my family lived in that town. It's so sad to see it as it is now. The mines really did a lot to that town. It provided work but in the long run look at what happened.
Wow...that is flippin weird. Cool vid....One question though.....Why was the American flag still flying at the fire dept? Someone has to have been keeping that flag up....It looked to good to be old.
Was the tornado still happening as you filmed this? Because I heard a lot of wind. Those little microphones are sensitive, aren't they. They pick up every little sound.
I went to this town today and there were less than 10 buildings left standing. I kinda got lost because there were no street signs and google maps kept taking me to the high school. I put the address for the fire department, the old miners pharmacy, and a few town street names but it just told me to go to the high school. The only thing that was there, was the Quawpa tribal police. Can you do another video where you drive the same path to show the changes? It's like the town just fell off the face of the earth. Thanks.
" It's amazing how fast things break down after the people are gone." Best line in the video.
I was about 9 when they made us move out. I go back about every other year. Thanks for the memories!!
Kind of spooky, but Google hasn't updated maps & still shows sat imaging before this video was even done.
Glad you enjoyed & have a great day.
Wow! Loved this video! Thank you. Your delivery was paced and easy to listen to. I love videos having to do with abandoned towns, communities, etc.... Please make more.

Thats just sad as hell. Thank you government.!!!!
Why was the Flag still flying at the Firehouse? Is it still manned?

Neat video,keep them coming thanxs
Thank you for showing us this .
Yes this is really a taxpayer bailout. Instead of letting the people sue the corporation for the land becoming depreciated due to mining underneath. The government bailed the corporation out and satisfied the home owners with Taxpayer money.
Good video, puts things into perspective. Thx 4 posting...
Thanks for the tour. So sad . . .
Abandoned except for that one cop who saw you run the stop sign-lol.
that's some real life walking dead shit!
Dude, film making 101. Keep the mic out of the wind.
Such a shame, so many beautiful homes left to rot...
Seeing something like this can bring some to tears even.
Its so sad to see this looked liked such a nice place to live at one time.
Seriously looks like a horror movie set. Thanks for tour.
Thanks for replying. I am still pretty amazed about such a strange situation. reminds me of a town I drove through in Northern Ontario, except it was much older , and the buildings more rundown. also surprised there's not much more damage from that tornado - which one was it? Wasn't the one that hit Moore, OK was it? Think that was an F4 or 5
Looks like a good place to go drifting or drag racing! No one around to complain.
Lmao that's what I was thinking
hell yea..lets go?
Why would those people abandoned this town? I would like to know why and please answer my question.
Spooky! Thanks for the tour,I've never seen anything like this before.

Let me get this absolutely correct: Houses were buildt over where the mining was taking place?
I lived in Picher when the tornado hit on May 10th. We lost all of our belongings. We now live in Dallas,Tx and have family and friends that were affected by the May 2013 tornadoes,

beside the danger of wild dog packs can anyone inter the buildings ? or is it off limits
illegal to do so ?
Looks like a great place for drifting!
what about the lead and zinc in the soil that your mj will absorb?
you can get a foam cover for your mic' and it will help with the wind. love your videos from Tulsa , Oklahoma .

its like 3 or 4 miles from Quapaw and 7 or 8 miles from Miami. I lived in Miami, Quapaw and commerce back in the 90s.
Last time I actually visited that area was around 1991-92 for Quapaw Pow-Wow. Have since vacationed at other lake areas.
That was creepy as hell, how many of these ghost towns are in your area? I live in Montana and there is ghost towns all over old and new sadly
LMAO, google street view is SO out of date that they are showing my driveway with a car that I sold over four years ago. At this point over 90% of whats in this video is no longer there. Saying nothing for the fact that it was just days ago picher Oklahoma as a town was UN-incorperated & dissolved.
RESET1776 So they tore down all of this stuff? That's sad, Your video really made me want to visit this town
Yes, today it's not much more then a grid of roads with overgrown grass between them. Maybe the odd home here and there. But nothing like what I showed here.
Im really intrigued by your video, I want to hunt these ghost towns and see everything there is to see in them
Sorry, but today it's nothing like the video. The majority of the homes ended up being torn down & what could be salvaged ended up being moved. Today it's just a grid of streets & overgrown grass.
Welcome to Silent Hill.
Would it of been trespassing on government property if you went inside the fire station?
This was a mining town? How exactly was the town contaminated?I hope this wont happen to fracking towns. Im a little nervous about that
I understand about all the toxins & over mining, what happens to graveyards in towns like this? are they just left?
When did the town shut down? Were their a lot of cancer deaths in the town?
the town was officially closed / bought out several years ago. if I'm not mistaken about a year prior to the date of the video being posted. yes there were a lot of cases of cancer in the town and surrounding towns as well as a lot ( politically correct) people born with special needs from the area.
Cool, thanks bro.
wrf cnaer
I like your style, dude!
Toxins do not just disappear..any info on towns nearby?
ok i saw a rafdio tower that was standing if there was no power how did it still pass the FAA guidlines?
yeah your right, Detroit is the poster child for a brighter future of America.
Thank you for sharing
I'm sure it has already been mentioned - about the bright & shiny american flag waving away in the vid @ 3:24-:29. And the fact that it's gov't owned property......tornado went through, etc....totally abandoned? hmmmm. Something is still there. I think the fire dept is still harboring activity. :)
Cool video, Thanks.
Awesome Video - Thanks for sharing ! Looks like it used to be a real nice place.
It provided work but in the long run look at what happened.
are the houses still vacant now? town still abandoned?
Blame Bush...no...Halliburton.
This is so sad, I live in Oklahoma and this is just so sad to me. Alot of the people who lived in this town grew up there.
Thanks for sharing. Sad.
The answer is in the description. But in a nutshell it was a gooberment buy out because of toxic waste from decades of lead mining.
I used to live in Ludington, The Boss I worked for told me it was like everybody got up and left the place, especially by where the salt factory was.
maybe try go ascertain if there is railroad tracks located near huge warehouse like buildings. This could be relocation designations for UN roundups?
That sounds awesome!
Oklahoma is beautiful !
there are a lot of abandoned towns in Montana. Not quiet as big as this one, but they are usually fairly complete
What's it like driving through at nighttime?
thats why you grow it indoor with POTTING SOIL ...catch rain from the roof collect in in drums use peroxide to keep it fresh or pumps
@pastorgeorgem Wow, small world! Yesit is sad watching it happen.
In fact, the street view imagery is from 2008 in that city, before it was evacuated.
Was this a one industry town like a coal mine?
It was a lead & zinc mine area. It’s a ridiculous amount, like over 60% of the lead for ww 1&2 came from these mines.
Very good video.
Thanks.
