Yeah I agree with your sentiment, it’s my favorite verse from Aesop Rock as well, his best to date imo... (I’ve been a fan since his Def-Jux days; “Float” era. but I think this is one of Rob Sonics best/detailed bars as well. The bars that hits me the most is when he’s exampling the new color scheme he’s going to paint his mask. Its so impeccable and flawless said to say the least. Check it: “Posse packed, corduroy, water toys and karate class I'll be back, Play dough with Beowolf in a Chachi mask (Copy That) Roger this, modern twist on a running theme Minus Dean, dominate pocket change for the other team Gutters cleaned, chimney swept, give 'em depth for a color scheme Egg shell over bland white, van dyke, over hunter green.” I mean... got damn, right?!? By the end of the day; Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic are clear cut equals on this track/album and they really gave the Hip Hop community a stone cold classic of an album.
Both verses are flawless and they're meshed so well with one another. You don't hear a lot of albums that feature two rappers that fit this seamlessly. I've appreciated aesops music since labor days but just now discovered how good this album really is. Aes and Rob both drop incredible verses and ultimately compliment each other very well, it sounds natural for them.
This song shook me to my core the first time a heard it. 7 years later I can still say it’s up there for my favorite verses in both Rob and Aes’s discographies
"You'd like to think you're cool enough to not care if you're cool. But the spirit gets distracted, the flesh is fucking cruel" hits like a shroom revelation
I think rob has the cleaner verse in this. But I cant get over how mature aes has gotten over the years. Im really stoked he found a flow and style that really highlight who he is rather than pushing with vivid lyricism. He seems like a man reflecting on life rather than a man prjecting his insecurities. Im not saying his older stuff is dope but his level of maturity between this and his uncluded shit is really admirable
Kinda reminds me of how eminem dropped the Slim Shady act and doesn't really let that beast back out of the box. Old Aes was Savage and agressive, new Aes is wise and focused. I like them all though. Sometimes I'd like to see the beast unleashed for even a single verse though.
I understand you completely!! Thank you for saying this, because I thought I was the only one. I could be wrong; I’m only writing what my ears/eyes perceive to me. I would love to know what you think his verse is about. Because you’re right, it’s complex & vivid; and It most definitely should be discussed/deciphered more than Aesop’s verse. I’m pretty sure Aesop himself would agree as well.
