Well, I think it’s a combination of her not caring about LO that much anymore and putting most of the work onto her assistants. Her early art was definitely produced over longer time and she put in a lot of effort in maintaining the whimsical dark forest style (when the pictures popped off they POPPED OFF). Beautiful comics are rarely sustainable, unfortunately, ESPECIALLY if they’re as long as LO is. I’m not sure if it was Rachel’s first work, but she bit more she could chew with this one. I'm convinced Rachel just gave up and just wanted to end the series ngl, because it was just so incredibly fast paced and a lot of the shit that happened was just out of no where or made no sense or just were missed opportunities for the characters and unfinished story lines. Like I felt no emotion when the villians were defeated or when Perspephone and Hades got together. It just felt so eh. Im guessing in the beginning she essentially wanted to make a comic version of harlequin romance stories but a quarter of the way through she decided her story needed girlboss-feminism and thus added it, but she was not capable of doing so. Partially because she not that good of a writer, and partially because the direction she wanted the story to initially go was incapable with it.

the problem is that rachel beats it over the head that this is a modern “feminist” retelling, and she clearly has no issue changing myths and rewriting them. so why have this weird age gap at all, and not only that but then have characters openly highlight how young the nineteen year old protagonist is multiple times, ex: hera and hecate saying in the first few chapters that hades is gross for this shit 😭
persephones age has no weight on the story so to make the age gap so ridiculous is just odd. if she wanted to signify how naive and clueless persephone was, the evidence was already there when she didn’t know what a cellphone was from being a fish out of water in olympus. and the problem isn’t there being an age gap in a relationship, it’s about the age gap is between an ancient being and a teenager.

The plot point ended where it began, and she fully stood up for herself with eros only coming in after she had fully said what she needed to say. i just don’t think Rachel wanted to let the emotional drama of them fighting go. most of the time SA survivors don’t want everyone to know what happened because it is not an emotionally straight forward trauma which Rachel clearly knows and demonstrates through Chiron talking to perse in therapy about perse’s complicated emotions about what happened. If she wanted a similar scene with sad begging Apollo why not just have a full scene with Artemis confronting him. Plus it could have demonstrated the protector of women that many fans were complaining about her lacking

It was like Rachel went "I must make the most girl bosses as I can" and she did, but it created a GB Singularity that warped the story around it, making all the stakes in it spontaneously get ripped out and tossed aside for the sake of quirky women who don't need no man. Truly the Singularity was a force so grand it that its mere presence convinced all watching to commit mass suicide via strangulation. A pillar of women everywhere and how they too have the power to do....something. I don't know what, but something.

It makes sense that Dionysus is the one to teach Persephone about death and rebirth. Since in Greek myth he also goes through death and rebirth every season like grape vines. He dies every winter and gets reborn in the spring (Sometimes said to be chopped up like how grape vines are cut back in the winter time).

As a webtoon comic artist myself who’s made over 50 episodes at this point, I guess I’ll give my two cents on the art of the last episodes. I understand having deadlines so you really can’t make everything perfect when you have deadlines to meet. Even then, if these are going to be your last episodes, you want to really go all in on your art, even if you need to make a delay for that to happen. I’d understand if it’s the middle of the series or something and you just really need to make that deadline, but the way that Rachel has chosen to push out them gives off a feeling like it’s rushed and she never cared too much about her series to begin with, or just fell out of love with her own creation.

I’ve only worked on 50 episodes of my own webtoon and even then, it’s draining when you do it weekly. It’s like your whole life circles around this thing, you want to make it as perfect as you can but at the same time, with enough time, it’s so easy to fall off of that passion you had at the start. My guess is that she also did have a decent plan at the start on how to line things up, but soon got derailed once it exploded in popularity. This comic destroyed persephone and hades as god characters, it hurts my soul it's one of the most popular depiction of the two, or atleast more popular than the hades games and the hadestown musical, both depicts hades as the bad guy but was still sympathetical, persephone wasnt infantilize and wasn't depicted as a all to good goddess,
    (SPOILERS)
both the game and the musical seperate the two to reunite them in the end in a satisfying way, albeit the musical was more bittersweet, the hades games reunite them in such a long phased way so that once persephone agrees to return it was tediously satisfying.
    (SPOILER OVER)
i love this myth alot, but i despise it when hades isn't shown as a bad guy while the other gods are. Hades is still a god even if he isn't the worst, if an author shows the gods as evil, hades should be to imo.

    • @cosmok-1367

But that’s the thing. The comic shows Hades is in fact evil or at least toxic. Hades has done many bad things throughout the comic. Torture Alex by carving out his eye just because he took a photo. He has a reputation of being in relationships with women, where he has power over them. He’s a cruel, authoritative king who views his subject as free labor.
The comic proves Hades is a terrible god, the problem is the author frames him to just be misunderstood and the rabid fans defend his actions despite how terrible they are.
Oh, Hades took out Alex’s eye? Well he was only doing that because he was worried about Persephone’s image. And he fixed up his eye later.
Oh, Hades has a problem with women? But the women also hurt him as well, all he needs is someone he can control - I mean, someone who can understand him.
Oh, Hades treats his people like slaves? Well, maybe they are all bad people who deserve it.
It’s not the fact hades doesn’t have any flaws in Lore Olympus, he does! In fact he’s just as, if not, worse than his own brothers. But the problem is, the comic doesn’t showcase that this is wrong as long as it’s Hades doing it! Rachel Smythe frames Hades as a sad, lonely man child so everything he does is because of his own trauma. And that wouldn’t be a bad thing, but Hades doesn’t learn from his actions, nor does he actually get called out for it.

With the whole love arrow on Apollo part, I’m just not sure how that’s supposed to work. Is it basically letting Persephone mind control him into admitting his crimes, because that just seems both off and has really dark implications about love arrows. Or worse, is it saying that Apollo now really loves her so NOW he cares about what he did to her and why it was wrong. Because one, you don’t need to love or even care about someone to know what’s right and wrong! And two, that makes me think of all those, “true love turns this total jackass into a good guy overnight, (but only because the woman is good enough)” tropes.
Or it’s even accidentally implying that people who love someone will never be abusive to them, which is sadly just not true. Some people just suck, but some people can be abusive AND care about who they abuse. Plus that all plays into the really harmful mindset that if someone is just “better”somehow and can make someone really love them it will stop abuse, which it won’t.
Just, I thought it was a bad and rushed way to wrap such a big and important part of the story up but the more I think about it the worse it gets!

I'm baffled at what the author dedicated 'screen time' to. You have Daphne's rehabilitation and Minthe's restoration happen off screen, but then detail Persephone going to fill up a romantic rival's apartment with barn animals as revenge for pursuing Hades? Major developments and important character moments taking a backseat to petty vengeance was such an odd choice. But honestly, a lot of this felt like Melora Maxwell's Disney Hercules fan fic, 'I Won't Say It,' and it wouldn't shock me to learn she was a fan from back in the day.

17:22 about kore being small and stuff, i really don't like how she's protrayed. i'm not short. i am around average height, but i have met plenty of friends who are short and i've met people who have dwarfism. and the first thing they mention is how they dislike how short characters are always pointed out about their height. dwarves are always pointed out for their height for example. it's annoying and boring.
now, jokes are fine, so long as you aren't going so far to imply these people don't have feelings. characters having first impressions by their height, added on to other traits, is perfectly fine. but why is every character obsessed like this? why is it a defining key trait she has that is overshadowed by everything else? height DOES effect how people see you, i can imagine a lot of people would assume Kore is harmless, peaceful or cute due to her height and a few other factors. And that'd be perfectly fine. (Mind you, these assumptions are bull, had a friend below 5 feet who punches like an iron fist. have met plenty of aggressive and rude short people and cute is a subjective adjective.
bullying towards short statured and little people happens often, but this never feels like an accurate display of the bullying they go through.. it just feels like it's a way to make kore be as infantilized as possible? have the gods never seen or met a person who's short statured or something?? they act like it's a rare trait that's supposed to imply about persephone's magical abilities or something, or hell her fucking intelligence. which is really gross, and i think it should be more accurate that only characters that look down at her already should act this way. but EVERYONE does. Even the people that respect her??

i agree, the proportions in this comic are… comically bad. it’s definitely not coming from a representation point of view when her body type and height changes so much throughout the comic.
the intention was never a positive look on height differences in relationships like there’s never a point to it other then for characters to say “wow she is so short and small and cute and young i’m a big old ass man and i wanna hit that”
and it really sucks because height differences in real life are not bad. you can be a 7 foot basketball player in love with a little person. but i guess the borderline pedo bait is what gets the most clicks

Late reply but I always like to interpret Hera as capable of divorcing Zeus but is unaware of it or too afraid to try it. Divorce is a part of marriage whether one likes it or not and thus it technically falls under her domain and leaves her capable of performing annulments for other people and for herself. After all like I said, "What is Divorce if not part of Marriage?"

I think I know why this has become something so empty. Lore Olympus was an unpretentious project where the author placed herself as the protagonist with a hot and modern version of Hades, but with the unexpected success, she had to develop the story as much as she can and this must have been very tiring. It's like wanting to make cake only with flour and some eggs; you may even be able to make it, but the result will be very unpleasant.

It’s a shame because I actually really enjoyed the first few seasons of LO. With season 3, things just felt…different. Like Demeter’s “overbearing mother” routine got turned up to 11 even though it had been addressed multiple times already, a boat load of characters and side plots get left at the wayside, and the ending felt *super* rushed. I’m glad I’m not alone in noticing that. I don’t want to hate on Rachel-there’s a lot I liked about the series, but I feel like there’s stuff that maybe happened behind the series that we don’t know about. Whether that’s burnout, deadlines, or confusion of plot lines, we won’t know unless otherwise stated. Just wished it ended a bit better, you know? (And WHAT?! Thanatos getting to talk to Hades “sometimes?” What’s that all about?)

It's about an alien girl who unfortunately (in my opinion) lands near some pervert weebs home. He basically "raises" her and teaches her Abt earth, all while being a creep, still not over his ex, telling this alien not to have romantic feelings for him (proximity is always the reason ppl end up intimate) she's still naive in what she knows Abt earth, romance, and social shit. They have the same height difference fetish in this comic, they always draw this alien in skimpy fits, a lot like Persephone. In general I'm surprised ppl haven't caught wind of Down to Earth

I'm a long time reader and finally rejoiced when I finished the last episode, personally, I think the one thing that bothers me most with LO, is that Smythe kept introducing stories of other character relationships into a story about a SINGLE relationship. She wanted to include the gods and that's fine, but the way she did highly overshadowed the main couple to the point that they were fighting for any screentime by the final volumes. Hades and Persephone's relationship is flatter than anything I've seen on webtoon. By the time the ten year time skip happened and they were still forced to be in the pinning phase of the story, I lost interest. They had no romantic development other than useless pillow talk and quiet moments that went nowhere and were often times ended because of Persephone's on again and off again PTSD - which I'm not sure if she ever talks about with Hades or anyone else in the story other than the therapist (that we never see again after Demeter's wedding refusal)

Overall I agree. To be fair I think 20:00 Hera and Hades against Cronos show an interesting contrast on what it would mean to two different people to move on past the abuse/abuser and both ways are valid. Hera battle style is raw because she no longer needs her talking to maintain a certain facade to survive. But this option requires power and energy as some people might find this emotionally draining so this is not something all victims can do right away. Hades, on the other side, wants to stop the cycle of violence carried from father to son to finally move on, and I want to think it is because Melinoe is in the same realm (and maybe watching and feeling all) that he doesn´t want to resort to violence too to end this. He has struggled with his own identity in the past and I think it's perfect that he didn't react the way Cronos would have expected. Plus, they are in a more intangible realm? so thinking and emotion overrule physical confrontation.

I feel like the series blew up unexpectedly, and when the deal to publish the series and make all this merch from it happened, Rachel was not prepared and had to make certain changes to appease the publisher and make it more friendly to a wider audience.
I know one of the main criticisms about it was the age gap between Persephone and Hades, and I feel like the random time jump forward was done to make the age gap less creepy and "fix" that issue so it was more palatable to people. I think there were probably other decisions made like that, too, or that were influenced by making the series more corporate.

To me the main drawback from this finale is how it kept trying to chuck end game bosses at what was otherwise a romance. Kronos I could partially understand as it's a connection to Hades' trauma. Oranous meanwhile just pops up quite literally out of thin air and has no other connective factors than the fertility goddess.
Maybe it would have worked if this was more of an action romance or if either were just brought up with any meaning. But nope we're just causally having the death of all God kind (cause if mortals die so do those gods). Which speaking of, if that rule ever actually existed prior to the finale why wouldn't it have been brought up during the trial as "This is why your act of wrath was so dangerous" and needed to be punished despite Persophone clearing her name.
I think ultimately what makes this conclusion feel flat is Persephone nor Hades grow or change enough compared to their early counterparts. There may be spikes of power or new connections but I can't say much about personal growth they worked for.

I could always see that Rachel had trouble drawing movements and action, especially when she constantly draws everyone posing as if they were in a pin-up (and not in a flattering way like JJBA). But this was made more obvious post time-skip with Persephone's "fight" with Chronos during everyone's sleepy time. At that point, I was reading it just to get it over with, but it became the point where I was more than happy to drop it without ever knowing the conclusion.
Like, I didn't want her to go full battle comic but at least put some effort. You already suck at writing conflict, at least try to nail the fights you wrote in.

And LO is so frustrating because I SHOULD love the art, I SHOULD love the story concept. It is 100000% up my alley but I hate the execution. I hate how inconsistent the art is, how Persephone is drawn like a pin up in pretty much every frame she’s in, how her character is a mary sue-ish fanfic “oh i’m just a young naive girl but really I’m so capable but in fact I’m really not”. Also the portrayal of Demeter as a toxic mom. How is that feminist at all? I hate hate hate HATE how certain so-called feminists take ancient myths and try to blindly change them into “girl power” stories by applying modern conventions on them.

Frozen as in Anna and Elsa? Let it go Frozen?

@@mikami1824 Correct. I may upset a lot of people with this, but at the end it was:
      - You sacrificed yourself for me?
      - I love you.
      - An act of true love will thaw a frozen heart.
      - Love will thaw. Love. Of course. Love!
And BUM! She knows how to end winter.

@Comsing8 I mean yeah, Frozen uses love to save the day but its completely different. 1.) The audience interacts with the entirety of the story within an 1hr and 48 minutes as opposed to the years it took for Lore Olympus to end meaning that the solution being "trivial" is more acceptable cus ive wasted less time. 2.) Winter was directly tied to Elsa's emotions, specifically her belief that she was an unlovable monster that only brought harm to those around her when she "let it go" and existed as the magical being she was. The conflict is established at the start of the movie and becomes resolved when Anna sacrifices herself to save Elsa proving that she loved her and wanted to be apart of her life so badly that she'd die to protect her. It's also a fun diversion from the usual true loves kiss that the audience is used to. The story was about the relationship of two sisters. The antagonist was always Elsa's fears and insecurities (mental) so love isn't such a trivial solution after all. Could it have been better? Everything can always be better, but the story was strong, the main characters arcs were completed, and it was done in a decent time frame.
For all these reasons I don't think that Frozen and Lore Olympus are comparable. But tis my opinion and nothing more :))

@@mikami1824 It's good that you have your opinion and can express it :)
For me, both solutions are a snap. I absolutely understand the idea of an act of true love, but for me a better solution would be if they started talking to each other after all this sacrifice and slowly everything melted, or they stayed in an embrace for a long time and then slowly melting, without shouting "love, of course!" and 2 seconds and done. Mental problems are not a light switch as they showed in Frozen. Unless my neurosis is special and years of anxiety come back even with medications. I'm not defending Lore itself, because honestly I stuck with it for the drawing style. And I agree with what was said in the video, although I must say that I don't think I could have written Lore better. Or rather, definitely. Of course, I don't believe in a perfect story either, something can always be done better, but both stories failed miserably in terms of dull solutions. Too fast, too easy.
I know it may sound bad, but I'm glad that Lore has such criticism, because it was very successful and showed that you can have big plot holes and still have fans. For me, and my drawings, it is important to look at something from time to time that is more heavily criticized and still finds a large audience with love.

The entire series was shit for edgy cornball teenagers who dig all the baaad fanfiction and have no idea what a healthy relationship even looks like.
