Hi Rachel. Thank you for all of your cattleya expertise! One thing: C. walkeriana and C. nobilior bloom directly from separate pseudobulbs, so you get either an inflorescence or leaves, not both. It looked like your's was growing a leaf from what I could see but I could be mistaken. I will be experimenting with my cattleyas under grow lights this winter for the first time, so I am excited to see more videos on your results! Happy growing! Oh, and, "Hi, Roger!".
Ah you are right. It has been so long that I have had that cattleya and it hasn't flowered that I forgot what I should be looking out for 😀 Happy growing!
I found this video to be extremely helpful for my own growing of cattleyas! Really enjoyed watching this and learned a lot. Roger is very knowledgeable, thanks for linking to his channel. :)
What a nice visit, but glad you gave him back to us. Morning coffee without a Roger video isn't the same...hehehe Your cattleya are looking lovely by the way, one of my fave species to grow.
Great “catt talk”, very enlightening to me. It would be nice to have that guest over more often. I should take a look at his channel, he seems very knowledgeable as far as orchids are concerned, especially cattleyas. Happy growing.😊
Happy to see Roger! When using grow lights you should know that in order for a plant to bloom they need WARM/RED light. Warm/red being 2700k - 3000k preferably. Blue/cool light (4000k+) will only aid in vegetative growth. You probably know that already, but it is common for people to overlook when using grow lights; so just wanted to mention ^_^ Check your lights to see what kind you have. Technically you should have 1 of both. Good luck! (:
That one worked well - but it looks like you may have a bit of 'explaining' to do about our new technology growlights covering the full light spectrum and producing 5,000 lux at 1 meter distance. Even the light produced is pleasant on the eyes as green has been included (so no purple plants on camera). I'm waiting until the natural day-lengths drop below 11 hours and will then try and maintain around 11.5 hours of daylight - some natural and some with the grow light. I still haven't worked out where it's going to go but I know I'm backing up to at least 1.3 meters as my camera is telling me this is a very powerful light. Should be good as we will have three sets of results come Spring (including Oliver).
Hello,Rachel! Very nice plants! I'm going to give up with my Catts. I keep them on south-facing window, but they only grow new pseudobulbs and the pouches became brown. After that, they again start growing new growths.
Very insightful video. I will buy the book on cattleya. From my experience with R Digbayana and its hybrids, they tend to like (or withstand) drier environment than other cattleyas. They are very prone to rotting. I grow mine in holey clay pots filled with large chunk or charcoals.
I just had to let you know, my Glauca has a sheath! so I'm quietly confident.... :) The plant spent most of the summer against the glass of my grow room so perhaps I will have buds soon! Corbin
I enjoyed a this video! It was a very interesting conversation. I have enjoyed a lot watching this kind of collaborative videos in which you have a guest and talk about the orchids. It feels like we all learn a lot from it. Has your cattleya mossiae bloomed already? How are your latouria dendrobiums doing? Thank you and Roger for the great video!
Hey #PhalPals Roger and Rachel. I’m in love with this video. Rachel you never looked more beautiful. I commend you for taking UA-cam orchid care to the next level. Rodger this will surly get you those 5k subscribers. Happy growing to you both from your Americans #PhalPal Durrell
Good to mention that book, I think there is no better source material on Cattleya care than Chadwick. On BLC George King, give it time, they typically bloom in late autumn (that sheath looks the same as mine do).
the walkeriana looks like my rupiculous laelia milleri! it has very bulbous PSB's too ! and the leaves look like they could be succulent they are very stiff and cupped like yours :) xoxo L.
Hello Rachel. I also have George King serendipity for about 6 months. Never had cattleyas before. Recently I've noticed that the sheath on a new growth became yellowish with some small dark spots like freckles. I've read that some cattleyas dry sheath out before flowering. Is it normal for George King or should I be concerned? Thanks
Dear Rachel, Can you please tell me the name of the book about cattleyas? BTW my digbyana is having longer PB than yours , I found that strange since you are the one having monster cat's and we have the same type of weather (I am in Germany) I almost lost mine to Fussarium. She was doing a bunch of nothing and I decided to cut and see. There it was. So I was able to salvage 3 PB only those had any green tissue. She is putting out some roots now , so I think she will make it. Maybe one day (my dream) I will see her bloom! Thank you a lot
The book is 'The Classic Cattleya' by Chadwick (I did write it in the screen at the point in the video where we mention it again). It is available fre e online but I wanted a hardcopy so I bought it. I hope your plant rallies :/
I have a rescue nm id gold cattleya that doesn't have any roots. I live in Canada and I'm trying to get some roots, I do keep in small bark pearlight with a top dressing of spagnanum moss. But every leave is turning yellow.. 😰😢 Help
The grow light that you have it's only a 100watt. So it's not that strong at all, considering that some people use up to 1200w ones. I have 700watt one directly above my catts. I wouldn't put your cattleyas in a room without the window. That light would be good as an addition to the southern window or/and extended day light in a winter.

Great video! I could listen to the both of you all day!

What a delightful discussion of the cattleyas (and one dendrobium). Thanks for sharing your expertise with us.
Thanks for watching.

Yeah, check out Roger's channel. A third of his plants are dendrobiums. It is his speciality :)

Great video. Love hearing you and Roger chat orchids
Good luck with your new grow light Rachel.

Oh no. I am very sorry to hear that, Clare. I guess everybody's 'south-facing' does not yield the same light !
Two of my favorite UA-camrs😀
Thank you for this video. It is pleasure to see.

Hello and thank you for your comment. That cattleya book is excellent. It is available free-of-charge online but I preferred to have a physical copy.
I just had to let you know, my Glauca has a sheath! so I'm quietly confident.... :) The plant spent most of the summer against the glass of my grow room so perhaps I will have buds soon!

That's great news. Lucky you! Hope to see a video of its flowering!
@@GardeningatDouentza Thanks Rachel, I'm hoping for the best!
Cool....
Now I want to get C. glauca and C. gaskelliana to see if I can maybe get them to flower.
Haha. Go for it!

Gardening at Douentza what do you think of my channel?

I agree. Super book. My cattleya bible :)
Michael McCarthy ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🤪

That sounds like a cutie too :)
Great video
Is it you just the species cattleya that need rest?
Just cut baack on the watering a little?
My book just talks about species. Personally I don't rest my cattleyas but they would get slightly less water in winter sometimes.
A very good video!
great video, unfortunately my outdoor season is coming to a end, and back indoors they go!
Happens to the best of us!

Ah, we already discussed this on FB

I think you are doing the right thing but it is hard to get cattleyas to regrow roots if they lose them all. Good luck.
I dont see any link to Rogers channel in the description
Hi. The links to Roger's channel and video were in the end screens. I've now also added it to the description.
walkeriana throws it's spikes from the base of new growths..not from a sheath at the top
Yep. My bad.
and unfortunately digbyana is just as harder or harder to bloom than glauca..digbyana pseudobulbs get as big as your purpurata
Cool....I love a challenge. My garden is full of the digbyana species...
Is that a maxillaria tenifolia? Grrrrr. Im struggling with my maxi... it came with a styrofoam as media...
Not sure it's Max. tenifolia. It was sent to me by Miss Orchid Girl way back when. Its habit isn't like tenifolia. It;s never flowered.

More to come
My high light season is just beginning, the arc of the sun is nearly low enough to give full light in my western window for almost most of the day
lucky you!
😁
Love you PhalPal
