The last KLM 747 flight out of Toronto YYZ was a few days ago. YYZ ATC gave them a rare low departure path right over downtown TO. I happened to be outside, and it flew right over my terrace at not even 3500 feet. Was very cool.

I'm from TO as well and in 2018 I intentionally detoured from Paris to Amsterdam just so that I could fly back to TO on a KLM 747 as it was rumoured then that they would soon be put out of commercial passenger service. The B747 is my all time fav airliner going back to the early 70s, and while family and other members were aghast that I would add time and distance to my return journey, I couldn't wait. I was not disappointed at all. Sad that we won't be seeing them at Pearson any more, except perhaps as cargo carriers.

I have been on an LT1011, too. LTU from DUS to LA, in the early 1990s. I was too young to really appreciate all the Pan Am flights. I don t recall my flight back to Europe, nor my Pan Am flight back to LA in December 1989. I still have a couple of slides from back then. I will turn on my old Leitz projector and check them out again, reminiscing about the 1980s.

The first flight I can remember was KLM Business Class from Bangkok to Amsterdam in a 747. Absolutely INCREDIBLE Paul! I am so Disappointed ☹️ that I never did and now never will fly the KLM 747! I’d say KLM’s 747-400 was their best ever aircraft and flying The Queen of the Skies with the world’s oldest still operating airline and their oldest flagship jet the 747 must’ve been INCREDIBLE!
    Cheers 🥂

I work at Toronto Pearson and had the privilege of seeing 747's from British Airways, Lufthansa as well as KLM on a daily basis. I sometimes would go right up to them if I had some spare time just to take in their beauty. It never got old. I managed to snap a pic of the last KLM 747 to depart from Pearson just as it was taxing to the runway. The 747 was also the first aircraft I ever flew on which was back in 1986. It was an Olympic Airways 747 flying from Toronto to Athens with a short stop in Montreal.

I spent many a summer on Bonaire - a smaller less developed, at least back then, version of Curacao. I only flew in to and out of Curacao but once when my American Airlines trip out of Kralendijk to Puerto Rico was canceled. In any case, both islands are endearing. I surely miss Bonaire immensely. Especially the rest/refueling stops and beach flyovers of KLM DC-10s between Amsterdam and Lima. A long time ago now it seems. The same for 474s in ten and more years time. Truly sad.

My family is so lucky and thankful we got to fly KLM 747's a few times; once in the upper deck back in the 90s. Last time I flew it, the seats were way too cramped so did not enjoy the flight much but it will always be my favourite plane to watch take off ... so hanging on to those memories, and videos like yours. Man, you are so lucky. I went to Curacao over 40 times and never once saw the inside of the FBO. You may have even seen the airline I used to fly for down there. Its a shame what happened to the 747, being prematurely canceled, but those are the times. I am just waiting for airlines to decide to do this to their A380's. I had a trip that I had routed to be on a 747 this year, but that's canceled. Oh well, just stay healthy.

I joined KLM, LHR in 1973 at the age of 20. KLM 's 747 aircraft had been in service for just two years. I ended up working for KLM for 43 and am now retired. I planned to travel on a 747 before they also retired but fate has dealt the blow. I must admit to having a tear in my eye remembering all the flights I made in the big blue birds over the years. Cheers, 747 and thank you!

My first long haul flight was on a KLM 747 from Amsterdam to NRT Tokyo. 747’s truly are the queen of the sky’s. I’ve flown with a lot long haul with other airlines but I always find KLM is very consistent with it comes to good service.

I took the AMS - YYZ jumbo around 25 years ago and was sitting next to KLM's pilot examiner, who flew the world on KLM, checking on flying standards. He took me to the flight deck and the 1st Officer gave me his seat (never happened before or since). I saw the most outstanding Northern Lights I have EVER seen and I have seen them quite a few times. I did that trip several time and also the Air NZ 747 down to AKL, every year, for a few years. I loved flying on the 747 up front. It felt like you flexed when the rest of the plane bent and vice versa. I don't think I ever got further forward than row 2 or 3.

The 747's will sure be missed. My first long haul flight ever was a 747 from Mumbai to London, and I was still a kid back then. Even in Economy, the meals were quite good, and they even gave kids candy & books back then !! I will miss that for sure.
It's a real pity that the future generation of kids will never get to experience such fond memories.

That's an awesome report, love the introduction where you tell more about the places you visit. Really a sad end for the Queen of the Skies though. Let's hope this situation resolves rather quickly or we might see other legendary aircraft types go away, too.

Although not a "legend" per se, the A380 is also now essentially toast. If this lasts >six months, I'd expect the 777, 787, A330, and A350 to be next. Between the pandemic and likely rising fares to compensate for reduced demand, I think the workshorse/jumbo of the next generation will be the A321XLR.

Brought back a few memories of KLM 747 flights to Shanghai, Beijing, Chicago, Houston and Bangkok. Always tried for 1A or 1K in the earlier business class cabin and usually managed to get one of them. Never flew on the upper deck, but as a purser once said to me 1A is the best seat in the house, how very true.

I flew KLM's b744M business class in Dec2018 from Amsterdam to Mexico city. Despite it's age,the retro experience is always a pleasure. Also the crew was amazing.

I was lucky enough to fly business o the 744 back from Mexico City last year, although I must admit it has to be the top deck for me on the 747. It's a big shame they have been retired. Although row 6 on their 777's can be a treat when you get the whole row to yourself!

I found the best B747 seat was 1K, First Class BA, into Kai Tak (Hong Kong) with the twisting approach from the west, between the buildings. Fantastic views, sadly in the days before GoPros!

I remember flying on the 747 long ago it was my first ever plane ride to Chicago. I was headed for navy boot camp then. I love to travel myself and I miss the air. I work for an airline so the trave benefits help out a lot too. I can't wait to get back in the air once this is all over and we go back to normal it'll be different but normal nevertheless.

On my first and probably only flight on one of these I was upgraded to Business class. It was a great experience. Sure, the bird is old, the entertainment remote reminded me of my Super Nintendo but it was all working fine and the service great! I’ve flown on more modern aircraft with other operators that were way less well maintained and had way worse service. Complements to KLM for keeping up standards even on plane retirement!

@14:25 in my experience KLM is always very av geek friendly, even when you don’t have a camera with you lol. Love KLM, too bad I didn’t have the chance to fly them one more time on their 747 😢

My home airport is DTW and I remember walking in the DELTA Terminal at DTW and seeing 747 aircraft getting ready to take on the long haul flights to Asia, this started with Northwest Airlines until they were bought by DELTA it was sad to see those planes retired.

My last time on board the 747 was with Korean airlines from Sydney to Seoul in their upstairs business class in early 2010. Korean business class had a much more updated hard product though, with excellent seats and ife.

That’s really cool that you were on the KLM 747, great video. What’s kinda funny is I was visiting Curaçao during the same time you were, but I think left the day after you on the American flight to Miami. At least I got to see the KLM 747 one last time.
