  • It's been blowing a hooley this week. I've had a walk around to check that everything is okay and I've also got a short, medium and long term plan mapped out for the garden. But before I really get started I need to get to know the soil in the garden - so I'm doing some basic tests. The results will guide my planting choices going ahead.

So refreshing to see a pro gardener asking himself the same questions and dealing with the same issues as most of us watching. No quick fixes, work with what you have, take it step by step but have a vision and a plan to get there. Really enjoying this channel.

You are so right about fighting alkaline soil trying to change it to acidic. Gardening should be fun and also accepting reality.Love the "tree fellers". Thanks for taking us along on your journey/journal.

Good for you saving the wood from that cedar. We had wood from a walnut on our property milled and made into a large dining table and a coffee table - both with live edges. Glad no major damage from the storm.

I think the average gardener would be completely overwhelmed when taking on a project of this size. There are so many things that need doing, but I guess they have to be prioritized. It makes sense that you’re bringing in knowledgeable people to help. Your weather looks a lot like what we have in S Florida currently, overcast and windy. In all my twenty years growing up in the UK, I never remember so many storms like you’ve had recently. An expat watching in Ft Lauderdale.

So glad you started this channel. I have struggled with what to plant in my garden over the years. You have the same growing conditions as I have so I'm very interested in what you will be planting in future episodes. 👍👍

It’s going to be a gem. You have some beautiful big trees in your wooded area. I love your view beyond the bottom hedge. Maybe mimic the horizon beyond with a hedge. Oh you have enough ideas😏

I’m in rural north Cornwall , I’m on sandy slightly acidic soil, my Hydrangeas and Rhododendrons do brilliantly but my roses struggle so I found this video so informative and I look forward to any future advice . You have the such a beautiful garden I can’t wait to see the results .

I’m in the same boat. Opening up my tropical back garden and have to get a move on before mid April because then it will be too hot for anything but maintenance. Got some men in for the new paths. I’m excited for your garden as well. Summers are the best.

I really like Joe, but just cant bare to watch this , that beautiful cedar , home to all that wildlife for so many years.....surely a good design would include the Cedar left in it..... oh man.... off to watch another Joel Ashton vid.

Interesting. I've always been taught that 7 is neutral, anything above that is alkaline and anything below acid. So, 6.5 would be slightly to moderately acidic, but 7.5 is slightly to moderately alkaline. 8 and above is considered alkaline while 6 and below are acidic. Really enjoyed the discussion of identifying soil types by touch. I used to do soil judging here in American in 4-H when I was a kid, but I'm definitely rusty now.

You’re right but in the world of horticulture (which isn’t that precise!) anything between 6-8 is called roughly neutral..thanks for watching

With all the trees and shrubs coming down / out you could think about a dead hedge. Maybe somewhere you would like to keep the deer out. Relatively low one would suffice.

Sad to see hedges coming out I do hope you put some back for wildlife x

Plenty of hedges staying and more plants going in than coming out! Yes, may do a dead hedge type thing but probably more stacks etc for wildlife

I garden in Alabama red clay in the US. My plants love all the minerals once you learn to work with it not against it. Exited to watch your tips on gardening in clay soils.

We have yellow clay here in NE Ohio. I will take my clay over a sand any day of the week. Looking forward to seeing the Tree Fellas coming in to clean out. We have a black walnut coming down in March. Hate the messy walnut and it’s juglone.

Taking hedges out...doesn't that leave little wildlife and birds homeless?

    • @JoesCountryGarden
      @JoesCountryGarden  4 місяці тому

Hedges are mainly being reconditioned/rejuvenated rather than taken out to produce more flowers/berries and habitat to aid wildlife and many more plants will be going in..! Thanks for watching
