    One of THE VERY FEW UA-cam clips of the vintage Rollers playing live as opposed to lip syncing to their records. I saw them in concert in '76, '77, and '82, and I can attest to the fact that they really could play and sing live, with no tricks. Now, they weren't the best musicians in the world, but Derek was solid on the drums and Eric was more than a passable lead guitarist. More than that, they had great songs and the crowds were always into the shows. Good times.

      Eric is a very underrated guitarist, It's a game is a brilliant album that really shows his ability. Saw Eric's version of the rollers at the Mathew Street festival a few years back and they were brilliant.

      I saw them twice in concert and it was awesome. Derek did a drum solo at both and was great. Eric is very underrated on guitar and deserves more praise than he got. We were teenagers and my mom went with us. She still talks about how fun it was to this day, lol.

    Byli skvělí. Les uměl čistě zpívat a kluci čistě hrát i naživo. To se nedá říci o všech zpěvácích a skupinách. Někdy bývá mezi studiovou nahrávkou a live-vystoupením ostudný rozdíl. Děkuji Bay City Rollers za radost a úsměv, které mi stále přinášejí.

      Yeah, this was still during the “honeymoon” days, or “salad days” or whatever… of their career. In ‘75 they were on top of the world and hadn’t grown sick of each other yet. It was a very different story a couple of years later.

    They played instruments and sang upbeat style pop rock.
    I can see why they were appealing to teenage girls.
    My cousin had their posters on her wall as a teen so she will be upset now.
    First David Cassidy and now Les.
    Pop idols are fading away.
    Of course, it’s been 45 years so I guess it’s inevitable.
    But it’s still a shock when you get the news. We are losing our Pop Idols and Icons one by one.
    RIP Les

    “Boy band”, my ass. They’re clearly playing their instruments live here (and in more than a few other live clips I’ve seen). I’ve closely examined these live clips, and as a musician myself, I have concluded that they’re definitely not faking it. I’m not sure why there were so many accusations of using “playback” (ie. miming and lip-syncing to prerecorded audio). I think it was just that a lot of people at that particular time had a hard time wrapping their heads around the idea that guys who looked like the Rollers did could actually play their instruments competently. After all this was during a time when rock music was really taking itself a bit too seriously. Punk changed all that a couple of years later, but in 1974-75 a band like the Rollers were a hard sell for the critics and the “serious” rock crowd.
    It’s like the Knack said a few years later: “…but the little girls understand”
    At any rate, the Rollers were no “boy band”. They may have been marketed as such and appealed to the same basic demographic of fans (teen and preteen girls), but underneath the tufted hair and tartan jumpsuits were actual musicians and songwriters.

    • @Mick_Ts_Chick
      @Mick_Ts_Chick Рік тому +2

      Yeah I don't get that either. I mean they toured for years before they hit the big time. You can't get away with lip sync and playback in live clubs in small venues. You could spot that a mile away if they had tried it. I've seen them twice and they played very well. Eric is probably the most talented. He played his fiddle during The Jig and was just awesome. Derek had switched to double bass when I saw them in 79. He did a really good drum solo. So yeah, the haters were wrong all along. RIP dear Alan, Les, and Ian. Miss you! 🖤❣️

    • @Shikta-poobah67
      @Shikta-poobah67 Рік тому +3

      @@Mick_Ts_Chick A lot of these haters have even gone so far as to try and rewrite the Rollers’ history. The most recent BBC documentary on them leads off with the “boy band” labeling. It’s otherwise not a bad doc, but for me it’s ruined by that false precedent kicking things off.
      You’re absolutely right. Eric is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist who has also proven himself to be a decent songwriter, as has Woody. Derek could definitely handle himself well on the kit, and Alan was no slouch on bass. Obviously they weren’t Yes, Gong, or Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, but they were/are competent enough to make some great, memorable recordings that have held up well over the years. Personally I’d rather hear great songs rather than a bunch of self-indulgent 20 minute guitar solos (that kind of thing always bores me to tears) anyway.
      All I know is that the record needs to be set straight on all this “boy band” nonsense. It’s just a load of revisionist jive.

    • @Mick_Ts_Chick
      @Mick_Ts_Chick Рік тому +2

      @@Shikta-poobah67 So true. That label is ridiculous. Boy band is for the ones who just sing to the music. I mean Alan was in his late 20s and Derek and Eric not far behind. Woody started young, but was over 20 when most of the big hits came about. Hardly boys, lol.

    • @Shikta-poobah67
      @Shikta-poobah67 Рік тому +3

      @@Mick_Ts_Chick When they started out (as The Saxons), I believe it was in either 1966 or ‘67… nearly 10 years before Rollermania was a thing. I do realize that by the time of the first album the only original members remaining from The Saxons were the Longmuir brothers, but still that’s very telling. The idea of a relatively unknown band “faking it” on the club circuit for almost a decade is absolutely ludicrous. Especially back in those days, when audiences were a bit more unforgiving of such shenanigans.
      All I know is that an official BAND-APPROVED book and/or documentary is long overdue, so the record can finally be set straight while the surviving band members still walk among us.

    Poor Derek - he never gets mentioned as a favourite Roller. Lol

      Derek's my favorite Roller. I've commented several times here already. But yes , he never got much of the glory which is too bad because he's a very talented drummer and incredibly handsome with a wicked sense of humor and a very kind and gentle man who cared for his terminally ill father and adopted a child and brought him back to Scotland so he could have a better life away from an abusive parent. Derek payed for his school and was thrilled to become a granddad at age 42 . There's an interview with Derek here on YT where he talks about his life after the Rollers and how he became a cardiac registered nurse after volunteering at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for years. He cared for Alan after his cardiac problems too . I wish my mum could have had Derek as her nurse when she had her heart surgery. Dear God, the cardiac unit is a damn hard place to work. Derek is a good man and I won't let anyone say otherwise.

    When the money was not amassing in their bank accounts,
    they should have gone on strike.

    When you look very close, you can see that they are not in the rhythem with the music. By, bye bye baby Les starts singing and the mic. is downstairs and not up at his mouth. By shang a lang they have to adjust their mics when they start to sing.

    A little more time in the rehearsal room with those background vocals would have gone a long way! Ouch!
