Outstanding!! Thanks for sharing!
Cool footage! I like the authentic sound of this video and also like the train horns of how they used to sound in the 1970s! Really cool!
Takes me back to 5th grade. The A-B-A helpers and the helpers cutting off on the fly Awesome.Taking movies and pics of trains back then was hard work plus You never knew how they would turn out.Truly amazing piece of history.
The GG1's are something else !!
Super Stuff RMA thanks
The 1970s were very much unkind to railroads, but they did a heroic duty in getting the job done and the public happy in spite of the circumstances. For example when Conrail became in vogue in 1976 it took them more than two years to get just half their track left over from their bankrupt predecessor lines up to speed.
The grade at Helmstetter’s must have been steep.
I grew up about a half mile from Helmstetter's curve, on Cash Valley Rd. If I remember right, the grade from Cumberland to the Savage Mt. tunnel was almost 2%, and pretty curvey. Whether true or not, I remember hearing stories of the early steamers breaking traction and having to back down the grade to get another run at it.
That grade crossing is sketchy lol. Great vid
Just so many friendly crews back then. Why doesn’t that happen now? Was there some regulation the FRA passed that required them to sound the horn only when necessary.
