Whoever gets this car is gonna be so stoked. The amount of work and detail you are putting into this project is ridiculous. Can't wait till it's done. Great video.
Before you go any further do a tape test on various areas using your masking tape and rip it off to check adhesion. You don't want to do body work and find out that your epoxy is not adhered. Not many people have the patients to do a proper job, they think paint hides bad work and it does to a point until it flies off. Excellent work !!!
My goodness woman! I am beginning to think you are the very definition of the word “tenacious”. Here in the U.K we have just suffered temperatures in the 90’s. You beaver away on a daily basis in heat we can only imagine. More power to your elbow dear! X
Im not saying you are over the top OCD paint prepping, but yes you are very very thorough and the best paint job is mostly the prep so we know you’re getting a great paint job and you are the smartest and best looking mechanical specialist I’ve ever seen, top shelf Sarah!
Sarah, I watch lots of vehicle restoration You Tubes and honestly your work is on par with Chip Foose, Counts Customs and Motor Car Garage. But you do all the work yourself. I can’t believe how much of yourself you put into your work. You are an inspiration. Your videos make my day. Thank you.
We all knew Bare Metal Resto was coming. We are not disappointed. The attention to getting the work right shows in the results and the time taken. Ragnar's new evolution is going to be a whole new life, and it's starting with the best care possible.
Another above and beyond love it, You have to be the hardest working UA-camr especially in that heat, wishing you much success, Hope the winner of your VW Bug appreciates the work you have in on it.
Sarah lives in the magic realm where it rains and hails one day and is 110 deg the next. It kinda suits her. Beautiful, if not obsessive, work on the Vdub. I wouldn't really expect anything else. She is amazing.
Sarah, the more I watch this channel, the more impressed I am with you. You are an amazing person with extreme attention to detail and it shows when you are done. These cars and Grams Ranger are better than they were when they left the factory. I love your sense of humor. Even 6 sanding videos would be interesting just to hear your comments and see what trouble the Penguins get into.
Sarah, Repeat after me: “Paint products are to be stirred and otherwise mixed thoroughly. Varnish is to be stirred slowly and with great deliberation to avoid any hint of an air bubble.” Lucretia Borgia Keep the aspidistra flying! Paul
Sarah…… it takes as long as it takes….. I sanded, prepped, sanded some more, oh and I sanded again…. Painted my VDub Jetta MK1 GLI (and I didn’t change the color!)……. IT TOOK 4EVER! … but and again, you’re authentic and STAY THAT WAY, because it takes as long as it takes! You can’t rush art end of story and I love your “next day” segways anyways so …. Stop making excuses for something which doesn’t need one excuse to begin with!
Back in the 70's my Dad worked in Togo, Africa and my Mum and I used to visit him during the summers. Most of the cars were Toyotas and Ford Escorts and most of them were bright white in colour. Unfortunately they rusted pretty quickly due to the humid, salty air which showed through the white paint. There was a whole industry of painting over the rust for dealers who sold used cars. Usually to unsuspecting foreigners.
I love the detail you go into and the fact you don't hide what goes wrong it's a teachable moment for you and the viewers. That car will look amazing when finished.
That is a crazy amount of prep work but like you mentioned in your notes a good paint job rests on how good the prep job is. I'm finding all that work and painting methods that you are showing very informative. Thank you for sharing all of this. Have a good one and have fun take care
Sarah, I am soooo impressed with your dedication to moving the camera to just the right spot for each scene. I love the reveal of you in the car removing the paper from the windscreen! I know how much work it is to constantly move the camera for the best angle, and yet you just keep honing your craft. To do as much content as you do with as much technical skill, not only working on cars, but filming and editing is simply astounding and I'm sure that your almost 1/2 MILLION subscribers appreciate it as much as I do!
2:51 / 16:45: so a old school way of sanding inside of the vents is this. Get metal cloth hangers. You need to measure about 3-4 ½ inches. Cut the metal hangers. Bend the tip part a believe 1 ½ inch. Then get sandpaper and cut long strips. Place front and back sand paper. Making sure the grit do the papers are facing up to sand the metal vents. Pinch the bent hook on the metal hanger in the middle of the sandpapers. After you have a lot of these done. Place the metal homemade sandpaper strips in a drill. Lock them down in the drill. And place the sandpaper in the vent groves carefully. Then apply power and let the sandpaper do its magic.
I was in my late teens in the late 70s. Dad and I would buy late model wrecked cars and fix them up. Dad had enough air pressure to paint a panel on a car but not enough to paint an entire car. But we had a friend who owned a body shop who would paint an entire car for us for $100-150 (remember, 1979 dollars) IF we brought it in ready to paint (primered & all taped up) and supplied the paint. Couldn't beat that deal with a stick and he was the best painter in northeast Neb. Dad was a good painter too, but part of his success was the prep work we did beforehand.
New nothing about the unmixed epoxy until you mentioned it, but your quick thinking and hard work saved the job. Your work ethic and professionalism always has a way of overcoming any speed bumps along the way. Good video content and the epoxy looked top notch IMO. ✅
Hi my name is Steve my dad was killed in the Air Force in 1964 and I just love watching you stuff because I'm not a Freakazoid or anything like that but I just love the Air Force I wish you well thank you for serving our country
When I have to bike in the afternoon heat sometimes I fill a camelback halfway with water, freeze it while it's laying flat and then fill the rest with water. Then I have ice water to drink and actual ice against my back for a while. Don't know if you can fit a camelback in your paint suit or not, but it's definitely one way to keep cool!
Would you believe that was my first car ever back in the early 80's. Good to see it taking shape. My second car was a Morris Mini 850. Seeing you bringing the VW back to life brings back a lot of memories for me.
You have spent a lot of time money and patience on this Volkswagen and you should be thoroughly commended for generosity for doing this you are a wonderful person
Love your show -- especially the witty intro 's -- this VW Bettle is going to look superb -- can't wait to see her finished -- slightly bulging mag wheels will add some muscle power to the looks ???
You are absolutely correct, madam, prep makes the paint job. So glad you gave yourself the mixing lesson on primer n not paint!🙎♀I'm following Fred too so I'll see the body work on Ragnar same as on the Focus!
When you (eventually) get to the motor you need to rig some sort of button or switch in the dash to put it into 'schport` mode! Even if it doesn't do anything it would be a nice & unique Sarah upgrade.
Manufacturers for sure use different grade steel depending on the price point they are aiming at. My VW Eos was parked right next to a Subaru Impreza in a hail storm and the Subaru was trashed afterward and the Eos had 3 dings that the PDR guy removed easily. BTW, love your work! 🙂
You really looked like a pro in the booth! Glad you figured out the mixing mistake , those mistakes are made all the time by people that paint daily! Probably won't do that again soon! The heat must be difficult! I used to paint over night cuz the temp was usually 20 or more degrees cooler. It all looks fantastic! keep it up,,, thats that she said!!
So interesting to watch this process. I can completely understand getting so engrossed in your task that things like stirring paint don't even cross one's mind. I've done that many times on projects. It came out so nice in the end. 👏
we all know your attention to detail, but when you were taping around the corner and it didnt lay "right" so you took up that bit of tape to redo it was SO SARAH! when you were painting, I saw that you had the air backpack, I hope that kept you a little bit cooler! we dont want to see you Fall out in the paint booth! :) I really envy whoever gets Ragnar, that is going to be one SWEET Machine! well done sarah, you never disappoint. keep up the excellent work.
Lol you and the other half of the world are getting our Aussie summers we had a few years ago when we had the fires . Since then we have had cold summers and our winters cold aswel . We love 40c i used to work at olympic dam at roxby downs and it used to be over 50c and dry . Now thats hot . Just drink lots of water .
Epoxy is very definitely affected by the heat, several brands of epoxy even have different "hardeners (Activators)" that one uses based on the ambient temperature, some will never harden below 40ºF, others will have too short a "pot life" above 100ºF.
Good job!!! I used to work in the body shop in transportation sq at DM. I was one of the few that could get od green to a glossy shine of them old Dodge and GM's.
All good, Epoxy primer is very forgiving, you should know from paint being applied to MIL aircraft, only difference, is Topcoat has a bit of Poly base added to the Epoxy, (give it little shine to allow air flow, water to bead off. makes a very durable high impact resistant paint system, work good on F/A 18, used why there allot of Epoxy based systems in the civilians use, very forgiving, holds up too many environments. Nice work as always extreme detail, prep is hardest making the difference.
You are so entertaining it makes this seem easy and we all know it's not. I love watching you. I'm glad you got the Bronco in before the hail storm. Ragnar is going to be awesome. I can't to see the finished product. Love all your vids. Keep them coming.
Especially if there’s very little humidity in the air that Apoxsee will set up slow Sarah or maybe by first I can’t remember either way do you want to make sure that the Apoxsee releases its VOCs so you don’t get Pop… or what we like to call holidays make sure you mix the Apoxsee well with the primer or activator, luckily you don’t have to thin it down with acetone..
Great job. So much detail into this bug; amazing. This brings back memories of my younger days when I repainted my 1976 Jeep CJ5. My only regret was that I only had a soft top and Chicagoland winters were no friend to the soft top.
Sarah, I'm always so impressed with your focus to detail (probably because I'm so ADD I'd probably get halfway through and walk away to chase that lizard in the tree) . Also, you said you forgot to stir the paint... I think once it hits 103+, you are allowed to forget a few things! Keep up the great work/videos.
It's so great to see all the little details of this car. Like those little vent windows with the etching on them. You could get some air to blow on you with them, but all in all they left something to be desired. But seeing that vent with the little handle really brings me back. That reminds me: I remember my bug being really noisy! If there is any way to improve sound insulation in this car, it might make it a better driving experience. Also, taking it back to bare metal was probably the only real choice. Mine had lots of cancer spots all over it. Once I had it evaluated to be painted, but they said it would be expensive and rust would return. Back then I had no concept of how to repair the paint, so I just drove it as is. And on this car I think you got lucky with so much of the rust, like where the wipers are because that is where they often rust through! Another place to check for rust is underneath where the spare tire sits. Also, my hat is off to you for picking a car like this to restore. No computers and sensors everywhere. It's just a driving machine. Simple and elegant. I know it will be fabulous when you are done!
1 day when we lived in Phoenix the day after a wind/sand storm, I was "blessed" to clean our pool. I was Middle School aged at the time and didn't notice. It was 115°F that late morning. I swam most all day that day. 🤣😂
I was a painter for 30 years and I’m very impressed. You take more of the proper steps then a lot of shops that are out there.
"Ain't It The Truth".... And the car painters I've met, Don't Look Like Sarah!! If they did, the line to get our car painted would be Huge.
Agreed
@@Chiroman527 🤣 hahahahaha true
"This is the last day in the vlog I promise" you say that as if its a bad thing for us. We love it
Agreed 👍

Sarah is one hard working lady.Superwoman well done.
I don’t even like Volkswagens but I want that Volkswagen it’s gonna be better than the factory did. You’re doing doing a great job
Whoever gets this car is gonna be so stoked. The amount of work and detail you are putting into this project is ridiculous. Can't wait till it's done. Great video.
And every step of it is documented. Can't ask for better than that
The attention to detail you have is mind boggling. Nice touch making the peace symbol with the tape over the engine bay
You put your heart and soul in your cars Sarah. This is what makes your videos so worth seeing!. Doing a great job.
Working on cars is always a "learn as you go" process. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride Sarah.
The hail reminds me I'm out of Jiffy Pop.
That's a hard working woman. Thanks for sharing with us. :)
The Peace-Sign at 8:27 was a nice '69 touch.
My goodness woman! I am beginning to think you are the very definition of the word “tenacious”.
Here in the U.K we have just suffered temperatures in the 90’s. You beaver away on a daily basis in heat we can only imagine.

Sarah, you really don’t need to apologize for being yourself. We know how you are and we are good with that. It’s why we watch you, plus you are fun!

Hi Bob. The guys next door have a you tube channel. I think it's called U-wrench. It's very informative.
@@waynegouin939 yes. They have great content.

Sarah your the only model mechanic in the world!!!!
When you stuck your head through the paper, "Here's Johnny" a la Jack Nicholson in The Shining. I laugh so hard when you amuse yourself.
Painting is an art and I think you did a very good job figuring out what was wrong and then correcting it.
You should also mention all the awesome work Fred is doing to the Focus, I'm really liking those videos on his channel!

Hail typically doesn't cause vehicle damage until it gets closer to an inch in diameter. If you're driving in it, maybe a bit smaller on the new cars.
