Why I think SW's latest survey is ****!

  • I have recently been made aware of Slimming World's latest marketing against calorie counting and a survey they have conducted. In the interest of truth, honesty and a bit of balance - here's my reply.

So true! You are telling it as it is. I hated the meetings, the clapping and condescension! People made to feel small as gained half a pound! Ww the same, never again.

I take on board a lot of what you are saying, and I am sure a lot of SW members will stuff themselves with “free” pasta rice and potatoes. But it is made very clear that the plan will not work unless you eat free foods in proportion to speed foods and protein. I can only say that I have lost 3 stone with SW and maintained it, and I have never counted calories. It’s not a diet it’s healthy eating.

Hi Carole, firstly congratulations on your weight loss - that's an awesome achievement. I just want to check a few things as I did leave a few months ago. Have they updated their guidelines on protein, because there weren't any specific guidelines on how much protein to have every day when I was a member or consultant, just healthy extras and syns? With regards to speed food, they do absolutely state 1/3 of speed food per meal. But how big is the meal, the plate, the portion? What is the total amount of calories for that plateful? The advice when I was a consultant was to eat until I felt comfortably full, that's not a portion size and hard to gauge. Likewise in between meals, so long as it's a free food, it's a free food and there's not guidelines beyond that as far as I'm aware. I can't deny that SW works for some people and people do get to target. I'm not saying that, it's all the others that I'm more concerned with - the ones who feel like they've failed and are a failure because they weren't getting a calorie deficit which SW says in it's own science is the only way to get a weight loss

Please change your recording to landscape instead of portrait though, you look very strange on my big TV 😂

I couldn't agree more. Thank you for this. I have come to the conclusion that SW should come with a health warning. It plays with you emotionally, physically and mentally and then when you fall off the wagon it is always your fault, never the plan. I watched a SW you tuber count her meals for the day by counting calories alongside and was pleased to report that she had come in under 1000 calories so she took this as proof that the "anti SW" brigade must be wrong. Well, firstly, no one can keep to under 1000 cals permanently (eventually they will give in to all sorts of temptation) and secondly I compared that days eating with all the others she'd filmed and I'm afraid to say there was quite a reduction in food on the "test" day. Anyone who thinks they can eat endless amounts, reach target, and stay there is truly deluding themselves imo.

That's hilarious - thanks for the comment. I wouldn't ever recommend that low as that too is dangerous, under 1200 calories a day should be checked with a medical professional. Sadly shows the naivety. I could, but haven't, go through and try to work out some of the meals - all I know is my days where I counted up the calories of being on plan I was over what I need to lose, that has been backed up by SW saying the average consumption of calories in their research was 1901 - that's a lot more than most need

If we could eat sensibly then we would. If I had 1500 calories a day I would spend them on sweet foods not healthy foods. I didn't get fat eating bananas yogurt and pasta. On SW I eat good food, plenty of fruit and vegetables. On cc I eat crap.... but oh, that's allowed cos it's my 1500.

    • @busybitchdiet1007

Hi Gwyneth, thanks for the comment. Fundamentally it comes down to choice. I can still eat healthily and count calories, have better portion control and the option to have a greater flexibility in what I choose and how I use my calories. Or on SW I have a much more restricted plan, possibly lose, possibly not (no way of knowing for sure) and use a lot of substitutes to make it 'free'. I have found from members that with CC they have less tendency to binge or have 'cheat days' because they're able to add in the treats as they go and develop a healthier balance. There's also some thinking behind there being an initial phase where you've been so restricted on SW etc that you focus on all the 'bad' foods you've not been allowed in the past before finding a balance. It's very easy to consume more than your body needs on SW, even if it is perceived as being 'healthier' foods - if you're consuming more calories than your body needs, it doesn't matter what it is, it's still an excess and that will cause a weight gain.

I have done sw few times did lose weight but slowly luckily I dint like pasta, but found in the end restrictive as sometimes I like cereal for breakfast snd then might take a sandwich for lunch
So I turned to calorie counting and as long as your eating fairly healthy can lose weight
Like you said sw does work well for some people but I think my body got bored with it snd weight loss slowed down or stopped

Thanks for the comment Sally. I do find being able to make my own choices as to what works for me, my life and family means I have a happier and healthier relationship with food, plus I'm losing weight. Whilst calorie counting I choose what works best for me and have a balanced amount because it's what I want, what makes me feel good and enables a weight loss. I think the challenge comes at SW when the amount you're eating is the calories you'd need to maintain, but without knowing that's the case - that's why it slows at stops. At the start you could have been in deficit, but as you lose, the deficit reduces and there's no way of you knowing what you need to change or adjust to still get a deficit

@@nikkiscotford2830 the biggest challenge when you move from SW or other plans to calorie counting is that now you have the freedom to use the calories on anything and after so long of not being encouraged to eat the rubbish as such, we get a little carried away. My advice is break your day down into breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. I have a rough idea of the calories to use for each block and then fill my day with foods I love, including snacks. I rarely go more than 2-3 hours without a snack in between meals, otherwise I'm more tempted by higher calorie things. I aim for an average of 5 a day in fruit and veg, but know these only need to be 80g portions, so don't overthink it an they're super low then in calories. You're welcome to join us at busybitchdiet.com/join for 14 days completely free to see whether we can help you get into a new rhythm as such x

Wow, you’re angry. I like SW, I’m steadily losing weight, eating healthily, in control. It works for me. Let people do
what works for them. Cc isn’t the perfect solution, it isn’t good for everyone. I don’t like it. Anyway, good luck with your business.
