How do you get your candles to not give you headaches. I love making them with paraffin wax but I get pounding headaches and my eyes get pressure behind them. My fragrances don’t contain any phthalates and I know paraffin is also natural but something is messing with my sinuses which sucks.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you're getting headaches from the paraffin wax! While paraffin definitely has its pros (hot throw, lack of curing time, and price) it's the biggest culprit when it comes to candles and headaches. Even though paraffin wax is technically 'natural,' it can still cause issues for many people because it's derived from petroleum. When it burns it releases VOCs (toluene, and benzene) which cause headaches, eye irritation, respiratory issues, and more!
I won't get into the whole "paraffin is toxic" debate, but this is why many candle makers refer to paraffin wax as toxic. It might be best if you switch to a cleaner burning wax like soy, apricot, coconut, or beeswax. If you're determined to stick to paraffin for the hot throw, maybe switch to a paraffin blend where it's more of the cleaner wax than paraffin. If you switch your wax up, let me know how it goes!
