    What Animal health treatments to you give the replacements at weaning, drench, vaccine etc?

    • @kiwifarmernz
      @kiwifarmernz  2 роки тому +1

      We give them an oral drench, and a 5 in 1. Then later, before winter they will get a second 5 in 1 and a multimin injection.

    We are just finished calving up here in the northern hemisphere, last one yesterday, we normally don't keep the April calvers but we had a serious cull last autumn as the price was good and kept twenty young April calvers, they were all supposed to be calved by the 17th but as we run Charolais bulls they carry a bit longer. We had the best calving that I can remember 157 calves out with 156 cows with a bit of fostering we have only one cow rearing twins and only lost three cows . And only two sections, wish the lambing had gone as well,only good side is that dry ewes are making great money here.

      Good to see your calving went well. Our cull cow price is a bit back here due to the works not being able to process them fast enough. Our cull ewe price is also good. Thanks for watching.

    Looks like a successful day!
    Good too see the bee hives tucked away there safely. How are they being managed, percentage of product/profit or just for the diversity and pastoral benefits

    Thanks for the vid. Really enjoy your stuff! Yards must work good for you to be able to work 115 cows by yourself, here in SA I think somewhere between 5 and 10 guys is standard! Winter coming on strong this side, heavy frost and some snow in Lesotho, started giving winter lick to our 170 cows... What's your lick program like? Guessing lots of phosphate with all your green grass? Thanks! Keep up the good work!

      The yards do work well. I have updated some bits to make it easer to work cattle by myself. We try and give salt blocks year round with trace elements (Cu, Zn, Co, I, Se) the will use a molasses based block over winter and high Magnesium block for calving.

    Great vid Alistair what would be the target mating weight for the heifers. What age and carcass weight would the steers and heifers sold be at the end. One of our climate change targets are reducing the slaugther age of cattle Angus and Hereford are being looked at more 20 cent/kilo bonus is a big incentive.

    • @kiwifarmernz
      @kiwifarmernz  2 роки тому

      We aim to get the heifers to a minimum of 320kg before mating. The best of the steers here will be sold before their second winter, so 18 months old. Heifers are generally a bit longer, say 2 years old. As long as the carcass is over 220kg then you are getting the best money. That's a good insentive you have to sell them early.

      @@kiwifarmernz. Thanks Alistair under 230kg we are penalised 280 to 360 is what factory's/retailers wants over 430kgs penalties. At the the minute such is the demand you'd get away with heavy cattle.

    What is this sorcery. Using a flying machine to bring in the cattle!
    You’ll be telling me there are tractors that steer themselves next, And there are Governments that actually care about farming.
    Ok the last one is a bit far fetched right.
    Hope they sell well. 🤞
