I met James once. I was so drunk that I stood there,.. mouth open,... finally I said "You're my hero." and promptly scurried off. He sold me too much beer that night.
I have been listening to McMurtry since the late 80s when he was being played in the St. Louis area on one of the radio stations. This is the first deep interview that I have heard with him. I live near Cape Girardeau, Mo and he is the only person I have ever heard who put that in a song. I think Ruby and Carlos is the finest of his songs but there are so many. He writes a full chapter of a book, if not the whole book in a song.
Seen this magic man all the way from Austin TX to Missoula Mt. Certified badass! Some of the greatest and most intimate shows I've ever had the pleasure to black out during

On the copyright law. I am no expert. I did hear a story Ray Wylie Hubbard told about using a line from Tony Joe White in one of his songs. When Ray called the publisher they put a price on it that Ray in no way could afford. Ray spoke to Tony about it and Tony made one phone call and Ray was allowed to use the line in the song on his record and there was no cost. Maybe I heard the story wrong. A thought on your opening about using artists songs.
SUPERB interview. Thank you!

The hosts voice is so hard to sit through for some reason. It's like they recorded in a library or something.
