After that ass beating in game three, most teams would have folded . The Islanders swung the momentum around. That's what you'd expect from a four time championship team.
Game 5 is remembered and rightfully so, but I almost forgot that the Rangers actually had a series lead and game 4 was technically an elimination game for the Islanders. Heck, the Rangers actually had a lead going into the 3rd period!
Flatley and LaFontaine REALLY gave this team a excellent pair a young fresh legs that could step right in like they had been on the team for couple yrs already...i think Rangers could have edged the Isles out without those two coming up when they did...also it boogles the mind now in this salary cap era ..sheer cost of trying to keep this Isles team together for even three yr run much less five ..same for the Oilers
I wasn't a Ranger fan but Jim Gordon and Espo were great, no one can call a game like Gordon, miss this kind of hockey, hooking, grabbing, cross checking players in front of the crease, it's not the same! Thanks Mike for posting these classics!
as bad as it was to lose to oilers in 84 finals thank god isles win this series ranger fans to this day would be bragging that rangers ended isles dynasty
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THESE!!!!!!!!
You have an awesome channel, been keeping sane watching the old 80's teams I witnessed as a child.
That 7-2 beating in game 3 was a shocker. Islanders looked old. They turned i5 around in game 4.
That goal by Don Maloney would be waved off immediately in today’s game, clearly a high stick.

Game 5 should never have went to overtime, still a classic and the best game I've ever seen.

billy smith won that game for isles he was unreal
Rangers really pushed the Isles in this series, I think this series is what drained the Isles by the time they got to the finals.

That's all true to some degree, but what I miss is the net being bigger than the goalies.
I agree with Warner Wolf 100%.
I am a NJ Devils fan but before they came here there was only the Rangers and Islander’s so I was a Islanders fan
thanks for this.

The Isles just drained the life out of their opponents.
Should've won this series.. Rangers
Blew it in game 4 and in Ot
billy smith won games 4 and 5 for the isles he was unreal
Wild series! Easily the best series out of the 5, but they were all great playoff series! Those were some great years if you were an Islander fan
Could have won it, but didn't, those Islander teams knew how to win even when outplayed, which they were for whole stretches of this series.
I definitely went to bed happy after game 3
