To all those adding comments saying this video is incorrect: You are WRONG.
The guy in the video is following and calibrating the rotator as per the instruction manual for the G-1000 DXC model EXACTLY as it reads in the Yaesu manual...Therefore he is correct.
If you read the instruction manual for the G-1000 DXA model, you will see the calibration method is slightly different to the video, hence why there seems to be some confusion with regards to the position of the pointer / needle being North or South facing.

I just bought the G-800DXC and this video was a huge help, i got real lucky and my alignment was spot on right out of the box all i need to do was adjust the needle and put the plastic cover back on and then just worked right along with you and it was perfect. A Big Thanks for making this video it is a big help.

Peter, This is probably one of the best instructional video's I have seen to date. I'm currently installing my Yaesu G-1000DXC and I can't thank you enough for this video for people like me who learn quicker by seeing it actually done. You have done a top job here and I like the way you systematically go through things step by step without rushing anything. Thank you. Dean (VK3DCA)

Great video and good for those unaware of the setup procedure..... now your challenge is to setup a G5500 with both AZ and EL and set the output voltage to your external control gear. Calibrate zero degrees and FSD, then take that reference voltages and feed it into you control gear and then calibrate again and then back to your G5500 and make sure mechanical stop and needle stop are actually in the stop area either side of FSD and Zero. If either are out of alignment; that could be a few degrees discrepancy and it’s back to the start and realignment from scratch. Fortunately most amateur satellite antennas for 2m and 70cm are 35 degrees of 3db bandwidth so not a major hassle.... it’s only when you go to 23cm, 13cm and 3cm you start to cry if your hard work is for nothing..... also EME can be problematic..... Yaesu controllers are good...... but not 1 degree of accuracy more like 3 to 5% and your not going to get that with a 500ohm potentiometer as your position feedback!! 73

So simple and helpful! I just calibrated my new g-800dxa and your instructions were spot on! I set my 0° to 180° because that will put my main talking in the middle of the rotation but otherwise perfect! Thanks

Peter, this is very helpful to me. I’m very grateful you did this video because there wasn’t anything else out there. I’m going to feature this on my UA-cam podcast. Because you took so much time and effort to do this… I think it’s worth everyone that I can reach at least knowing about it.
Well done mate and thank you so much.

Small point on the instructions, when conducting initial calibration, it says hold CCW till the rotation is at the far left (the needle should actually be pointing South!) - Which makes sense if you think about it, when it is set North, you can rotate it quickly in either direction. (Or vice-versa, should you wish to have South at the top).

I agree that there is a discrepancy between the video and the manial I got but my rotator is a G-1000 DXA whereas the video is for a G-1000 DXC model., Maybe that is the difference ?

Thank you for taking the time with this great video. I'm probably getting the G-450 and was unsure about the calibration until you showed us what to do. I hope you put up other videos for the other calibrations. 73's from N3NQP! One more thing if you don't mind me asking. I'm planning on running around 300 ft. of rotor cable from the antenna to my shack. Any advice for what gauge wire I need to use for that long of a distance? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! 73's!

I know this video is a couple of years old now, but I have two questions. The first one is what is that blue line at 90 degrees on the bezel for?
Secondly, I'm about to install a Yaesu G-1000DXC on my tower for my Hexbeam. I live in South Australia and there is not much South of me, except Antarctica. As I'll be steering it mainly west to east via north, I want to set the overlap to be about 45degrees either either side of South (I hope that makes sense). Is there a way to do this when setting it up so that the presets etc are correct?

  • @bteixeira2013

Thanks for the video, I was looking to find if there's a way to have the rotor turning by North instead of turning by South but I endup learning how to fix a minor deviation on the 450º turn. 73 de CT2HUU

Thank you for the video Peter !! Very valuable... as the saying goes..." one picture is worth 1000 words"... I have a question for you; my manual (G-1000 DXA) says that during the initial calibration the needle should end up pointing south (before adjusting the needle) whereas apparently in your manual the said needle apparently should be pointing north at the stop. Interesting that there is a difference..

Did you do the follow up Peter, as I'm trying to understand how the positioning of the rotator on the mast is best conducted. I've just bought a GS-232B and now realiise that I have installed my rotator without proper calibration, as I can't get full 450 degree rotatation. I did search for a video like this when I installed the rotator in March..... Thanks.

Thanks for the video ...I am bolting my g-1000 to a rotator cage and the orientation of the holes means the motor will not sit with the physical stop at north....there is a circular disk in the box with the controller to have north somewhere other than at the top of the controller..anyone else had to do this? Think its simply a case of fitting the disk and moving the needle accordingly...am I missing something ? thanks...

Totally WRONG procedure. With this calibration when you are in 0 deg or North and you need to turn in 300 deg, you must make a long (CW turn right) till to stop in 300 deg. The first calibration must be in 180 deg and not 0 deg as you prefer. Except if your antenna in most of times looking or staying at 180 South.
