This vid was great, felt like I was with some friends geeking out on bike stuff, enjoying some fine liquids, Not getting all formal and hung up on specs, More bikes & bourbon,
YES! Russ keep this up. I had a great time watching this. As others have said, it would be an amazing podcast, but I also enjoyed watching the video. Looking forward to to the next one already!
Great video! I’m a Scotch drinker myself, so learning more about Bourbon would be cool. I like your english major math: price per Liter is an interesting comparison (normalizing the numbers is always a good strategy and volume is a good point ;-). Are the bag manufacturers cashing in on the hype? No. Small companies not manufacturing in the third world cost more. Is more innovation going on in bike packing bags? I think they are flattening and moving to incremental gains so prices should start dropping in the not too distant future. You see that when a company like Topeak comes in with quality bags significantly lower than the cool brands. Panniers are long in the incremental gain phase. What do you think is the next level? Micro trailers with good suspension and articulation? That could be pretty’s cool after a few drams. Slainte mhath (no accent on the “a” with this keynote board)..cheers. I agree, the Cannondale lefty fork is an abomination but some “subtle” shock adsorption would be nice: the Specialized approach looks interesting, as does the Redshift stem and the like (way too spendy though).
I love your content, I think you make thoughtful reviews. Your dilemma of carrying things you want while being light can be solved in a if you see it from a different perspective. If you see the core challenge as energy expensed, & lighter bikes being more efficient to maintain pace, the solution is to use a bike that allows you to carry more while not working as hard: ebikes. I know, it’s a sensitive topic, some people are vehemently opposed to them, but they are often people who’ve never tried them. Hear me out: If the goal is to get out with gear, we’re already committing to a different set of parameters than “peloton logic”. Ebikes simply allow you to carry more while maintaining a comfort zone of activity. You don’t burn out, & you can take your camera gear, fishing gear, camping gear, & everything else for your adventure.
For those who may insist that “Ebikes aren’t real bikes” I propose an alternative solution: get super aerodynamic. A fully fairinged bike is also drastically more efficient, while being still entirely your effort. Not great for every application (mountain biking with fairings?) but could be useful for many. If you insist that too is not a solution, I would question if the level of specificity of what constitutes a bike is a measure of how much likely a person is to be a Luddite. I think we need more human powered vehicles, I think they should come in all shapes & sizes & enable everyone to get some activity in their day.
Really enjoyed the video. (You're much more entertaining when drunk! Then again, so am I.) Got a bottle of that 12 year-old last week, actually. Needs a little water gentlemen...
Great stuff. Just a note on audio mixing - it's balanced more to the left, I think. The background music sounds even, but both your commentaries come mostly out of the left. No biggie, but thought I was going crazy at first.
This was fun. Got some new links to explore. Looking forward to the next episode. But I'm surprised that an English major can't pronounce pannier correctly. It's either `pan-yer or `pan-nee-er with an accent on the 1st syllable. Sorry to nerd out on you, but I cringe everytime I hear someone say puh `near. Or maybe it was just the bourbon and the scotch talking. If that's the case, then you are forgiven. :)
I LOVE the effort and energy you've put into this channel. I am a life-long fly fisherman who has always ridden commuter bikes. You and Laura have inspired me to make a change in my upcoming move to DC to begin Bike Fishing! I am under a really tight budget, but am looking to make a move from my track bike free wheel to a larger touring bike. Thanks again.
This is everything I want my Sunday afternoons to be. I'm hopeful for many iterations of this segment!
I ENJOY YOUR BIKES AND BOURBON. YOUR DISCUSSIONS ARE VERY INTERESTING AND EDUCATIONAL. YOU TALK ABOUT THINGS I,VE WONDERED ABOUT. THANK YOU.

Great. That was the goal!

Really enjoy the new format! You definitely have the start of a great podcast with this episode.
Great stuff, loved the new format, I watched it with a bourbon in hand and laughed and had a good time, thank you
8:10 "Grant Petersen is finally having his day" GOLD.
More bikes and bourbon and great shout out to the small makers doing stuff.
well played. Lets keep this going!
Love this format! Please post the link to that article.
If I'd taken a drink every time you guys said "supple"...I'd have caught up in no time. Fun video. Keep up the good work.
I like that idea!
Laphroaig cask strength. One of the best drams around. Total wine & more has it.
I think we have to build up to that level of peat.
Drunk 'n opinionated Bike Nerds. This needs to become a series. Next time I'll get my own Bourbon ready. Cheers!
Filming another one today!
Russ is bringing back the supple as new hot word of biking. love it Russ nice drinking and jibber jabber on bikes with lighter thoughts thread

Enjoyed this!
more of these!
Great vid, try Laphroaig single malt..best consumed on a freezing nigh around a campfire...one of the most distinct whiskys on the market :)

Good catch. I had set the L/R levels a little different and had one set as a safety track. Forgot to even them out in post.
That was good fun keep up the good work.
I love Elijah Craig! soooo good
Next time open with the bourbon of choice so we can join you. I love how you start slurring as it progresses. “...Because it’s bourbon.”
This would make a great podcast if it was maybe an hour long or more
How can I find your mailing address to send you something?

High Five!
Loved it!
I love the bike nerdiness, but I think talking fishing would go better with bourbon and scotch.
Great show 😀😀😀

LOVE this show. Maybe sit down around a table? You guys look a little uncomfortable.
This was actually our 2nd time shooting this episode. First one we did sitting and it didn't have as much energy :)
