Having a beard is Wajib. Letting the beard grow is Sunnah. Cutting after a fistful is from the Athar of the Sahaba. Shaving the beard is Haram. Just keeping the beard, meaning as long as one can understand you have beard and you haven't shaven it, fulfils the Wajib of beard keeping. This is what I have learnt from the scholars. May Allah forgive me if am mistaken or spoken ill.

The Ustaadh holds it to fard to leave the beard alone, as was the command by RasulAllah ﷺ. As for Ustaadh's on beard, he clarified in multiple accounts that that's all that it grows. Some of us don't have the genes to get a thick beard as soonnas we hit 14 haha.
