Didn't you hear anything about Queens like Laxmibai, Ahalyabai, Durgavati , Chennamma or perhaps martyrs like Matangini Hazra, Preetilata Waddedar and hoards of other such women who either led their people in times of peril or made the supreme sacrifice for their people? Have they been long gone? Any nation would be proud to have at least one such daughter mentioned in their history (they are not easy to find, you see) let alone hoards of them.
Also don't forget that the culture of this country withstood prolonged and intense invasion full of hatred by two different cultures in succession in the recent past, a fraction of which had destroyed entire civilizations. It is not hard to imagine that not all of the best practices would survive or take a beating. So we are surprised that you are surprised ;-).
