  • The speedo is intermittently showing zero while riding. It’s been getting progressively worse as time goes by. It’s a bit of a journey to fault find the cause but I get there in the end. Couple of links below 1st for the LED light and the other for the KTM wiring diagrams.

    Hello. check the resistance from fuse 1 to pin 11 on the dashboard. I had 14 ohms. I disassembled the ignition lock and cleaned the contacts. the resistance has become less than 1 ohm. after that, there were no problems with the speed readings even once.

    I need that bulb - just kidding!
    This is a very interesting video. I've been struggling with this issue for a while, culminating with my bike's battery outright dying on me. I run the same brand bulbs (Novsight) but mine comes with the little fan and ballast. Anyway just like your Duke, my speedo behaves almost exactly the same except that when I use maybe 20-30% throttle input, the speedo works fine. If I wring it out, the speedo dies but if say coming from speed and I'm just coasting with the throttle off, it reads fine again.
    A local shop tested out the bike where my battery (very old, very stock) was replaced along with a new regulator / rectifier. Issue is still there but I don't think my battery is fully charged yet. I'll charge it up and get back here to see if the issue gets resolved.
    Been dealing with the same issue for almost a year now.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the detailed video. I am currently facing similar issue on my Duke 200.
    The speedo works just fine when the headlight is turned off. But the moment I turn on my headlight, the speedo will occasionally show "0" while riding.
    The service center guys changed the stator coil and recharged the battery and still the issue persist. So now I am going to check the power consumption of my light bulb.
    However in India i couldn't find that LED bulb without the fan. I guess I might have to look into some local hardware stores here.
    However great video and I will keep you posted on my issue.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your effort and informative video. My 2013 390 Duke has the same problem and seems to do it more when I first start riding. I don’t ride ever day so I put your theory to the test and put the battery on charge and then took the bike for a test ride, knowing that the issue usually occurs more when I start riding. With battery fully charged the Speedo didn’t drop out once. Also think I’ll change the headlight over to an LED. Thanks again. Let me know if you still have the other bulb 🤷‍♂️.

      Interesting enough, after the bike sits for a few weeks (winter here) the speedo has a few hiccups until the battery fully recharges then it's fine. I'm wondering if there not a voltage regulator in the speedo circuitry that's on the way out.
      Time will tell.

    • @neilodonnell9541
      @neilodonnell9541 Рік тому

      @@mostlymotorcycles. Yep - it does definitely seem to be related to the charging circuit in some way.
      I've ordered one of the headlamp globes you recommended and I'll put that in and see how it goes, but to be honest I suspect my stator is on the way out, but if the lower power globe helps extend it's life then thats good for now.
      My speedo started playing up a few months ago literally after I'd over filled the pertrol tank and fuel spilled out over the bike. Once I started riding from the petrol station the speedo started playing up (my thoughts at the time was that the fuel had gotten in to some electrical connectors and dried them out/increased resistance so I blasted a few with WD40). Of course it could simply be coincidence that the fault appeared at that time.
      It's been intermittent since, and I recently come back to Sydney after 3 months overseas (and the bike actualy started on the third attempt without doing anything which impressed me) - so I fully recharged the battery overnight, tightened up the battery connectors and the speedo worked fine - until my next ride when it started reading zero again.
      So with a fully charged battery it works (my battery is only about 1 year old)
      My bike is 10 years old (only 15,000 KM) but there are so many annoying faults occuring, like the dodgy clucth switch which makes it stall for no reason - it fails when you stop at traffic lights or a junction) and my fuel pump went and started leaking fuel - that integrated unit alone was $650 and with mechanics labour it was expensive....
      The new 399cc Duke looks interesting though and I'd like to try the new 400cc Triumph when it lands here (be a few years before I can afford a 2nd hand one of either though I'm sure)
      Anyway, thanks for your help - love your work with the oscilloscopes etc , and I'll let you know how I go.
      Cheers,
      Neil

    Hello, first thanks for the video. I have the same problem with my 2013 Duke. I'm thinking about buying the LED bulb but I have a question. In my country it is mandatory to drive with the lights on, as soon as you turn on the ignition the light comes on. I tried turning off the motorcycle on a descent and turning on the ignition (which also turns on the light), but the speedometer continues to show zero from time to time. If the motorcycle is without the engine running, shouldn't the speedometer work properly, since I think the stator isn't working?

    • @mostlymotorcycles.
      @mostlymotorcycles.  2 місяці тому

      The light will come on when the ECU detect rotation from the front wheel.
      Maybe try disconnecting the connector to the bulb then go for a test ride. Not at night lol.
      Check the comments for other peoples faults on the same issue.

  • @willTryAgainTmrw
    @willTryAgainTmrw 4 місяці тому

    Hi, so if I got it right, the issue is bad stator. Correct?
    The problem goes in this order: speedo + headlight works after cranking up the vehicle -> bad stator -> doesnt charge battery properly while the headlight consumes power from battery -> battery voltage drops -> speedo stops working once the voltage drops below 9V -> Headlight also stops -> battery gains voltage -> cycle repeats
    My question is: My duke 390 also has same issue. It's 2013 model. Mine doesnt have always on headlight. Then why does mine have the same issue? Also, isnt replacing headlight with LED light not a permanent solution? Why is the speedo going off after a certain speed, while coming back on instantly after going below 60kmph? Shouldnt it stay off no matter the speed?

    • @mostlymotorcycles.
      @mostlymotorcycles.  4 місяці тому +1

      Sounds like a different issue to mine.
      Your right It's not a permanent fix if the stator is failing, but fitting a low wattage bulb may make it hang in there a little longer.
      Check a previous comment from a dude who traced his issue down to a faulty contact in his ignition switch. This was causing an intermittent low voltage to the speedo cluster.

    have the same problem with my old duke 200. im already using an LED headlight but going to check a lower ampere if it fixes the problem. Seems the stator in the early Dukes is a little week. I've heard of quite a few failing.

      hi, thanks for the advice, I tried but still the same problem, I did the same test as you by putting the multimeter on the handlebars and doing the test with/without the headlight, it's not clear if it improves or not.
      in my case there are moments in which it seems to mark for about ten seconds and then goes away.
      but the voltage in any case it is always of 13.5/14 V when I am on the motorbike and the problem occurs the same, I put the multimeter cables on two power cables under lock and key in front of the motorbike as you did (I don't know if they are the same but I think yes), do you recommend trying to change the phonic wheel? Already changed only the elettronic abs sensor near. Is it possible that the phonic wheel doesn't transmit properly the frequency?

    • @mostlymotorcycles.
      @mostlymotorcycles.  Рік тому

      It's unlikely to be the problem as it's just a metal plate. Check the gap from the pick-up to the disk.
      As the voltage is good I'm wondering if it's a fault in the gauge cluster itself.
      Only way to know for sure would be to swap it out with a spare from a friends bike or something like that.
      Otherwise I'm out of Ideas.
      Worst-case would be if you bought a new instrument cluster and the fault continued.

      @@mostlymotorcycles. Hi I have an update! First of all, thank you so much for your reply, you're really kind! I dismantled the fuse box at the back seat and found the 30a main fuse loose, but it still works. so I decided to change all the fuses and clean all the contacts, now the problem seems to have been solved, at this point I think I should do a more thorough cleaning of all the contacts.
      the strange thing is that I had the new speed sensor mounted and as soon as I tested it on the road it seemed to do it (1-2 times) then it seemed to have stopped completely, I refitted my old sensor and now it really rarely does it, I don't know whether it can also center the sensor as well as the contacts! one thing is for sure, the problem has reduced exponentially since I changed and cleaned the fuse contacts

      The third secret button is turning on/off abs.
      Two ground wires and two power wires fit to the dashboard. Probably, there was a bad contact in some connector, so 7 or less volts reached the dashboard. The stator of the generator is in perfect order. After all, at the beginning during the test run there were no reports of low battery voltage?! And the lamp didn't go out. Cleaning the green and black connector next to the dashboard helped me.
