Very good observations of a foreigner about Filipino values.. i appreciate your sensitivity of your wife's feelings and emotions ... it shows your maturity and level headedness.. seems that you're a good person .. both of you are inspiring
Hi Virginita, thank you for your comments. I think for a foreigner to survive and prosper in the Philippines, repect for the culture, religion, and values is a must. I feel its important to realise that you can't and should not try to change anything to what we are used to, rather for us to change to what we face.
Yes, you are on the spot. I was born there but grew up most of my adult life in the US. When I finally came back after 45 years, I was surprised how friendly the people in particular the services, and I don't even look foreigner. I'm just tired of the unfriendly services here in the US especially in the eastern part of the US. Just that alone made me want to reconnect with my birth country by buying my own vacation home in Manila. I think the reason Filipinos are welcoming to foreigners possibly because we were the most colonized country in Asia, and the US has been really good colonizer of the country till the end of WW2. What I am worried about is foreigners bringing their thinking from their country into the Philippines, in example the "woke" culture. I hope Filipinos do not follow these new thinking, keep our own original culture, stay good natured, religious (believing in God), and keep our schools in teaching our young the same Filipino culture and not follow any other country's new thinking. This was the way Japan was, but they are opening to other cultures in as well. This is also what my Japanese friend is worried about.
Thanks for the comment, and I agree with you about changing the Philippines. I hope this never happens. We love the way the Philippines is at the moment, and of course the Filipinas, if all that changes by influences from wester culture, it will ruin what makes the Philippines so attractive.
Thank you for your knowledge can I ask how it is in regards to a foreign person buying land or building a house do you own it or do you have to put it in someone else’s is name
Hi Margaret, you are correct, foreigners can not own land in the Philippines, so any purchases must be done in another name. Our land is owned by Clyde. Now that we are married, I can own part of the land, 49% maximum. A foreigner can buy and own a house, but the land it is on must be owned by a Filipno/a
