We were supposed to go to Colorado with friends.....That plan fell apart in the 11th hour. So I decided to set out on a solo overland adventure journey to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.(Of the unplanned variety)
We went to a route called the "Seven Hour Plane Crash Trail" bit.ly/3Fhn07U and while it was not a challenging route, it was over 250 miles off road and a very fun trip!

Those webs are most likey gypsy moths.
Those gypsy moths hatch caterpillars will strip a tree of its leaves totally in about 3 weeks after they hatch. Causes extreme stress to the trees especially under drought times

Excellent editing! These trails in the UP are very familiar to us. There are so many more that go past waterfalls, cliffs, cuts, rapids and lakes. I wish the Jeep community would amalgamate to support each other in scouting better.

Wen went back up there with the new Bronco in 2024, there are 2 more videos from that trip if you care to check them out. Waterfalls were found among other things.

If it makes you feel better, there is no fire tower down that road. Just a trail to the top of a hill where there used to be one.
If nothing else it solves my curiosity a bit. I still plan on going back though!
@@FlawedOffroadall the fire towers are marked on onx you can find them on the map and mark them. Only a few fire towers actually still stand in Wisconsin that are accessible to the public. It still cool to find the old bases.

He really enjoyed your video, and I’m a guy attends to be prepared but impromptu good a lot of times. Yeah and Northern Wisconsin Michigan late August. You will see the colors changing. I was going up the northern Wisconsin many years fishing and they contend to be that way, so enjoyed the content thank you
Great video, we ran the same trails from Crandon to copper harbor as you did. We ran into a bunch of those yellow gates and big tall dirt berms on the trails. In town they told us the loggers put them up for safety for the equipment
I could have easily gone around it but I try to follow the rules most of the time. Thanks for checkin out the video

I have been out to a lighthouse there when I was a kid, the walkway was giant broken rocks for a few hundred yards is all I remember. Might have been on the WI side

I lived in iowa for years, now i live in the upper peninsula. You should make the move, unlimited offroad opportunity, and always in the 70's, theres leprechauns and unicorns always prancing around, its magical. Oh and honestly the winters in Iowa were worse than what I've seen up here. Winters are longer, but milder here.
Realistically I cant move till our kids launch into their adult lives, youngest is 13 so it'll be awhile. We each have 2 kids from previous marriages so theres ex's involved, too much drama lol
This entire trail system you did we also did on ATV's starting from Green Bay Wisconsin and made our way to Copper Harbor.
The whole time I was out there I kept wishing we had our quads with us. Mines an old unreliable 96 yamaha kodiak 400 and she has a 2021 Honda recon 250. Thanks for stopping in

Yeah it was a lot of fun for a last minute unplanned trip. So anxious to get out again! I recently picked up a cheap overland trailer with a tent(can be seen in my newest vid)

I’d recommend not following the onX route yet as it’s not fixed yet. There is a gpx online that has correct route. And give yourself extra time to meander. I did a little bit but once my deadline started looming we had to jet.
@FlawedOffroad I already knew about the bill Nicolas trail and plan on following that. Unfortunately I only have 4 days total so we will be hitting as much as we can in that time.

There is not a fire tower on that road anymore, I was excited about it too but all that’s left is the cement block foundation where the tower was bolted to

Great video, those are tent caterpillar moths. Super common all over Wisconsin leafy areas.
I’ve had people give me like six different answers on what they are lol either way I enjoy looking at the giant webs they weave
@@FlawedOffroad Ha yeah, i saw all of em and figured I'd add mine to the group easily can google and see that is what they are with the correct name :D Should have been around here 5 years ago, the tree tops looked like cotton candy the population was so high around the wisconsin dells area at least. If we had spiders that made those, I wouldn't be in this state hahahaha. Either way, cheers and great adventures!

that was fun.
A lot of the trails around Copper Harbor go through private property. Some of the landowners have closed off the trail going through their property the last couple of years due to people not staying on the trail and trashing the property. The trails on onX haven't been updated to reflect this yet
That one I was on with the gate is clearly marked elsewhere as being only for atvs etc but whoever added the route to onx kind of went the wrong way(compared to the original track posted)
I'm only an hour east of Dubuque. Let me know if you ever want an extra rig along on an adventure.
I dont currently have anything on the schedule, however this summer I plan on making my way up to Iron Range, and maybe another UP trip
OMG man, had you gone just a little further past that former rocket range you would have found a wonderful free camp area right on Lake Superior! Not far from that the road ends but the view of the hills there is unbeatable. Guess you'll just have to go back now? Anyway, glad you enjoyed that area, it's some of the best in the U.P.
Would that be the fork in the road right before the range?
i recall a fork, left was rocket range, right was high rock bay. the thing was, we were 12 or so hours from home and I had to make at least some ground up to meet a deadline the next day so the exploration had to come to an end. Thanks for checkin out the video, this one did not resonate very well with my regular viewers lol
@@FlawedOffroad If you followed the road you were on the next left turn is the camping area. The road continues on a bit further south but dead ends; the view there is worth the time. High Rock Bay road is the first left after leaving US41.
I gathered time was up for you, if you go back up that way check it out
Note - A lot of trails like Bill Nichols Trail is part of Michigans ORV trail system and need purchase ORV Trail pass, about $35 total. Unless you are on a named national forest road than normal plates on your vehicle you are ok.

OMG I'm busting a gut. May flies are harmless but messy and come from the river. The worm's are bag worms. Looks like it was a great adventure.

@@FlawedOffroad ya the on site camping is pricy. There's a county park just to the north that has potential. Depending on who comes with me if I'm camping or hotel. At the moment it looks like camping. I use a hammock for that so I have concerns about trees at the fairgrounds.
Theres also camping at smorr but its a little ways away. theres a koa really close but thats pricy too@@alanharvey1499

You gotta try to ditch the technology. Enjoy the present and dont worry if your lost. Use a compass only and get lost. When you ready to head home then we use technology. Something about the unknown and the surprises make it better.
That’s the only way I’ve ever done it in the past. This was the first time I ever used the mapping software lol

Lake Ste Kathryn, we've stayed there before on our overlanding trips. You guys picked a nice area to ride through. We do a lot of ATV Overlanding trips. Check us out when you get a chance. I've subscribed to you also.
April-May the "May Flies" will eat you alive!! SERIOUSLY!! The flies will bite the hell out of you, you will be their "Bait Ball"
if you were up in late August/September, the bugs go waaaay down that time of year.
Guess we got lucky. This year if I go up again I want to see fall colors so it’ll be a month later
The colors changing that early is actually sick trees. I forget the name of the disease but it's odd.
Interesting, I just figured it was different species that start early. Down here in Iowa some start early some late but never middle of august! Hope you enjoyed
@FlawedOffroad I was up there around August about two years ago and thought the same. We were doing a 5 day kayaking trip so we had a while Ina van with a local. He was a wealth of knowledge.

Eastern Oak Wilt is hitting in some places in Lower Michigan. It attacks the tree early spring and is totally DOA by October. No leaves, no life of any kind in the tree trunk. Completely dead. I lost all my oaks trees in four years. If the oak tree shows a few leaves and branches dying in Late June or early July its dying!
In fairness, we do have color change in August quite often depending on weather. I love driving south even a half hour and driving “out” of one season and into another. 😊
