Great fly pattern. They simulate the ryhacophilia (green sedge caddis).I tie them using copper wire, multiple strands of peacock herl forming the body and head and green floss as a carapace shell over the top of the herl allowing the herl to show as legs. I then wrap the wire over the floss to secure it behind the head and tie off the wire, whip finish. Thanks again for another great video.

Matt, I don’t want to tell you how to do your job, but you definitely need to read “Pocketguide to Upper Midwest Hatches” by Ann R. Miller. Really fantastic book (especially for us Michigan anglers) with pictures, descriptions, and tying recipes for about 150 bugs.

I liked this one so much I watched it twice. Great little fly. I’ve tied something similar with yarn. Maybe I need to get a couple colors of floss. Do you have any additional color suggestions? Cream, yellow and tan.
Hahaha! I appreciate that. I can tell you, that yellow, red and green are the most common floss colors I use. One thing I do is buy a multi-pack of floss every year or so. Now the brown and silver may last a pretty long time as I rarely use them, but this is a pretty economical pack. flyshack.com/DisplayItem.aspx?ItemID=23422

Good morning Matt. I think a row of those will be going into my box as well. Not sure how well they will stand up though. I might try putting some krazy glue down before the herl rib on some to see if it makes any difference in durability. That book looks like a good pick up. Just got hit with hopefully our last winter storm. Our yard is white again but looking ahead to next week that will be gone in short order. Looking forward to getting on the water. Oh man, snow again?? We had some odd weather this weekend. Over 90 degrees on Friday, rainy Saturday and a kind of chilly 60 degrees today. As for the durability of this one, a couple people mentioned putting UV resin down on the body before the herl, and then seeing if it would be more secure after hardening it. You'd think it would have to be a bit more durable like this. Might be worth trying!
@@SavageFlies I tied a half dozen. 3 with glue and 3 without. We’ll see if it makes a difference…..now hopefully I can remember which are which when I use them. 😀

Absolutely Bob! And you know, until reading the first chapter of La Fontaine's book, I never realized that the humble caddis had been neglected so much for the last hundred years. But when I started looking back, it doesn't show up near as often in my really old books as do all sorts of mayfly patterns. I'm definitely learning a lot from both of these books.
When I first started fly fishing, the streams locally in MA had a lot of mayflies as well as caddis. However, when I started on the “fly fishing only” part of the Penobscot, I found that caddis & sometimes stoneflies were the predominant insects. Mayfly patterns worked but weren’t the most effective most of the time. That suited me just fine, since they were (to me) more fun to watch in or out of the water. :-)
Ha! Most of my memories of illustrations from that era are in black & white 😂. Awesome pattern, from the thumbnail I thought the body was a dyed biot. I imagine ostrich herl could be used as a rib too, and maybe metallic embroidery floss or the many iridescent threads for the body for that peacock sheen. I like the hook used in the book, think I've seen it before, any idea what the brand/model is?

I'll have to look at the model number when I get home but I'm pretty sure it was a Saber barbless klinkhammer from the Fly Shack. These are supposedly cheap hooks but I use them all the time and never had any issue with sharpness or with them breaking. (The Saber hooks in general I mean.)
@@SavageFlies Cool, but I meant the hook used in the BOOK :o) looks like a Gamakatsu C12U Caddis hook. I have klinkhammer hooks from Daiiachi. I think I have Saber egg hooks I bought at Dick's, red wing or black bird they were called. That was ages ago, inexpensive but sharp as hell, strong too! I couldn't debarb them with my needle nose pliers. I used them for drop shotting panfish when I fish the "dark side"I wanted to tie flies with them but never got around to it, plus I couldn't pinch the barb :o( and when I went to buy more the price went way up. I think I might try to sneak some wire weight onto the hook shank....and maybe a bead.
Could you twist the herl around a piece of wire to strengthen it? Or use a dubbing loop?

Yep, I go down the rabbit hole all the time too. :-) And now that you mention it, I'll bet leaving a long tag of thread and spinning that with the herl would be an easy way to make this more durable. But will you lose some of the gill effect by twisting the herl with thread? I don't know, maybe a little. But still worth a try!
Good looking fly Matt, if trout are wanting to be tight lip, green is my favorite go to color. Most riverbeds are covered with moss and matching the bottom color usually triggers bites, don't know why it really works, but it beats a skunk, whenever other color pattern
seems to fail.
No doubt Phil! I break out the egg patterns or San Juan Worms if I'm about to go home with a skunk. :-)

I wonder, in this day and age of UV resins, if you could put a thin coat on the floss before wrapping the herl gills? Could it eliminate the need for the counter rib?
Yes i have the same idee because after 1 catch i also think that the herl is broken. Aniway it is a nice patern and nice tying 👍
How about adding the herl over the resin & then drying it with the light? The embedded herl couldn’t be broken that way. I used to do this with Sally Hansens before UV resins came out. I would be tempted to add the wire or some narrow Flashabou as an attention getter though even if reinforcement isn’t needed.

All- I think these are great ideas. Are you thinking, like Bob mentioned, to put the UV resin down, then wrap the herl, and THEN harden it? That would be a pretty cool trick that I've never seen done. You might have come up with a revolutionary idea Jim! I'm going to give it a try. :-)
