    Ludwig…for rock. Sonor for jazz

I've always believed Ludwig made the best lower level kits. After watching this video, it turns out I was right.

The Sonor is a little beast

I own the Safari SE (poplar shells) and the Ludwig Breakbeats, also poplar shells. I love each kit equally. The Safari you played is their upgraded Safari which are maple shells. Still, I think the Ludwig Breakbeats held up pretty well. You also have to take into consideration the heads you are using.

You can hear the audio pumping from the limiting/compression circuitry on the mic. Probably not the best way to hear these drums

Great drumming! I have a Sonor AQX (poplar shells) Jungle kit. installing Evans EC2 heads on the tom batters and and Genera reso heads made a big differece in the tone quality, also slapped an Emad on the kick batter, not sure what the stock head on the kick is but it seems to get a deeper tone than the Emad. The kick pedal mount is solid but a bit of a pain in the ass to get set right so might switch to a Dixon riser. I played a gig last week with the EQ 2's and the stock kick head, mic'd with a Beta 52, unported stock reso head. The gig was a small venue as a duo,(acoustic guitar) mostly classic rock/old school country tunes. The kit sounded great and is a lot of fun to play but i did notice the kick getting a bit lost in the mix (2 15's on the floor) on some higher volumn tunes. We'll see how the Emad does tonight. Would really like to find out what that stock kick batter is...possibly a PS3 knock off. If the Emad doesn't cut it i'm going back to the stock head with a felt strip on reso to knock off some of the overtones. Thought about an Aquarian Superkick 2 on the batter but the head test is getting expensive. Really pleased with the tom/cymbal bass drum mount and hardware, top notch for $400 kit, add a good light weight single braced cymbal stand and high hat and it's very easy and quick on load in/out and on also easy my back! Hope this helps some drummers interested in the AQX Sonor Jungle kit! PS , The 13x6 snare, stock, is not bad at all , might throw some different heads on and maybe Puresound wires, but i like useing an old 14x5 ludwig maple snare, seems to blend much better with the rest of the kit. This is a great little small venue kit but definatly need to bust out the cannons for larger gigs! Thanks for your video review. very cool!

Great comparison, but shame the skins weren't the same. The Ludwig seem to have pinstripes and the sonor amabassors or similar. That's like night and day

I`ve never seen a comparison like this. Very good. Thank you. I am a Sonor guy. Like the darker sound. of course it depends how you tune it. For me - 16" BDs are not gonna cut it. simply too small to get a good sound. for sure a cocktail set is a compromise. but 500 to 900€ only for the shells (which are to small imho) I think you can use a 10" tom as an effect in a fill or something - but ONLY having this tom... don't think its fun... OK you have the 13" floor tom too... but here`s the thing: you can mount a 13" tom tom on a 18" bass drum with a regular snare and here you go. :)

I've had the sonor jungle and skins, tuning and technique has also alot to do with it. Also if your kick is miced. I've used my sonor jungle kit is some big gigs. I never use the matching snares. Often I had a 14x7 maple 1970s premier. In the studio I recored a real heavy rock track and my biggest Tom was 18 while, after recording with a 22, then 20, the 16 sounded much better

I've just put an Emad UV1 on my AQ2 Safari, port holed the front head and put a small roll of cloth in front of the batter inside the kick and it sounds incredible..

Damn.. considering the Breakbeats is a 3rd of the price the AQ2 definitely doesn’t sound 3x better… if at all considering the sound is subjective. And when you add in one of the major reasons to own a micro kit… to cut down on weight for easier transportation, the Sonor also weighs almost twice as much since it’s made of a much heavier wood (maple compared to poplar) and the hardware and hoops are much beefier, again the Ludwig has the advantage.
Now if you were to record with the kit and want the best possible sound and want a better tuning range then the AQ2 will win all day.
Point being, for an everyday beater that’s super easy to transport, something like the Breakbeats, New Yorker or Midtown are an amazing value and you can’t go wrong.

What pedal do you use for the kick?

  • @U2WB

To be quite honest, I hear very little appreciable difference - especially considering that the Sonor kit costs considerably more money. Aside from the obvious build quality, but at the end of the day does it really matter much if you’re just using one of these mini-kits for easy transport to rehearsals ? I would honestly never consider playing a gig with either of them. That rack tom sounds just awful on both kits.
