It's useless ,big , not good to drive ,too damn expensive ,performance and economy are a joke ,the styling has barely changed and...i just love it! love doesn't make sense
I can attest that the performance is pretty impressive off road, having owned both it out range rovers the Range Rover, on road though hmmm, much more reliable though
This is a car you buy because it looks cool, it can go off road and it's a ton of manly fun. You buy one because you want one. It's purely for car enthusiasts. And that's why we love the G-Wagon.
I've got a G63 because I live in Park City, Utah. It's very hilly, and when it snows, getting around can be an issue. Because this thing weighs as much as it does, and has the incredible off road equipment, it never has an issue. My parent's also have a cabin that's up a rather rough dirt road. My parents have a Range Rover, and we often times see who can get there first when I visit. I've never lost, because there's only really three buttons to run the transfer case, and it's just so much tougher. The Range Rover has that annoying knob system, and is surprisingly fragile. Being an actual off road enthusiast makes me pretty critical of off roaders. This is certainly one of the best I've had. It's a lot like a Land Rover Defender, incredibly tough and mechanically simple, but with a Range Rover's interior. It's also loads more reliable than a Range Rover. Mine has never broken down, just normal maintenance and such. It's been great.
Firemarioflower I'm clearly joking about Hitler and the bearded woman. So much, in fact, that I actually said I was joking and then complimenting him on his comment, which was actually genuinely interesting. Oh, and for the record, I actually like this car, although I'd never buy one.
a love this car, it's from an era in wich mercedes were on the top of their game. i've seen one a few days ago and i wathced beneth it, the ammount of thick heavy steel is impressive, this was made to last. i hope one day i can afford one
imp alor Surprisingly, not everyone does because there are a few idiots on the road who do speeds of 80 to 110 km/hr on the faster lanes and slow down the high speed traffic. PS: It's 87mph.
I am in the DK military and often drive a 25 year old version of this car. It is definately not designed for roads, but NOTHING beats it off-road. This thing, with proper tyres, will drive you anywhere! I have been in the iraqi mud and on steep kosovo mountains without roads of any kind, and it just simply never fails.
Why do British reviews focus so much on expected disadvantages? Of course, it's not surprising how it's crude and handles like a tractor. I don't think many people believed a military vehicle from the 1970's would drive like a modern hot hatch. They also make silly complaints about other sports utilities, pickup trucks and their disadvantages. Why not complain about the 3 series having poor off road abilities or a Golf not being able to tow gooseneck trailer?
I like matts review he's critical of car and highlights the good and the bad, most car reviews only talk about the good stuff cus their to scared to say something and upset the manufacture
PatLadsChan99 Perhaps he's generalizing, but it does seem like British reviews tend to focus more on expected downsides while not giving enough consideration for the intended purpose of the vehicle. Many knew this vehicle wouldn't handle or ride like an E-Class or S-Class, but they emphasized that anyways.
meow larry There's also nothing wrong with being critical of the review. Just saying it's all good and important to someone that buys a 4x4 would be untrue.
I think matt missed the whole big point. This car was built primarily for driving on rough terrain. It started out as a military vehicle ffs. One of the best off roader out there. Should've focused more on its off-road capabilities rather than on normal road. It's kinda like ridiculing a Gallardo for impracticality because it couldn't fit a family of 6...
I disagree. People in the Middle East buy and drive them in the desert often. Granted there are also many buyers who won't ever bring it off road. My point was that matt focused too much on normal road which is not the vehicle's strength. I'd have enjoyed the vid more had he showed the off road part a bit longer than the 30 secs in a 6 mins video..
Aidan Haiqal Mate, I live in the Middle East, the UAE to be exact, this car is infamous here and you can just about see this car on just every street. The locals here love it but they don't like the 'standard' version, they go for the AMG ones, in fact, the standard non - AMG versions are more rare, I kid you not. Eitherway, they don't buy this car to use this offroad, very few, if any people do that, just because they're rich doesn't mean they're stupid. For offroadinf purposes, everyone uses either a Nissan Patrol or a Toyota Land Cruiser, which are firm favourites here aswell. People invest in a G - Wagen because theres nothing else like it and its essentially a status symbol.
I loved this review, every review I've watched on this car have had only one or two disadvantages. Matt says it how it is and gives an honest review. It's not just a "look how pretty it is" review. It's down to the nitty gritty about driving. When you really appreciate cars it's the handling and driving experience that's more important. Not just the look of the car.
This is my favorite type of car. You either love it or hate it. If you hate it, like Matt seems to do, you'll point out the disadvantages and move on to a different vehicle. But if you love it, you'll dismiss any negatives, buy it over anything else the market has to offer and love it til the day you die.
I got lucky and had short drive on G55 few years ago and with all the negatives this is stunning machine! Getting in and you feel like you can go over a incoming truck without even scratch the paint or survive nuclear war! May be it is not so sophisticated but it is really trilling!
I just bought one. It is insane, I don't have any use for it. It is outdated in every way. Every time I see it I smile and await an experience of driving it. This truck is an experience, that is what you buy it for. The rest of the SUVs are boring compare to this monster. I am ashamed even referring to G as an SUV.
In reality its a proper machine for someone who actually needs offroad option, but sadly its more popular in towns for celebrities and other status owners. Mat you should have done a offroading clip instead. Then the negatives would have vanished. Its one of the better oldschool offroaders out there still and for someone who needs those qualities a good car to own, i would consider a G-class, used one of course 10 years old or so if i would live in a farm. Its more reliable than the Landy of same spec and actually Defender is more basic compared to G-class, even the late 80s G-classes had leather and wooden-esque trim which made the car kind of classy, Of course Defender has its positives as well but i would take G-class over Defender.
This is a great car. My dad has one and I have driven it quite a lot. Of course it is not the best car for tar roads, but on off road you won't get anything better. The car's off road capabilities is insane.
AMG G63 6x6, is that beast considered a SUV? If it is than that is clearly best SUV ever. But that goes into the crazy field of offroad vehicles, like another Merc the UNIMOG.
Everything he complains about I think is endearing. I love these. It is not designed to be a sports car. I don't know any footballers who drive one, they have the RR Sport for that. Yes the odd drug baron and Chalga stars have one, but seriously how many cars can you park in Knightsbridge, Ben Nevis and the Black Sea coast and not look out of place? Yes it is flawed, but marvellously flawed.
I don't know what he's on about. It may be horrid to drive when it comes to turning, and it's not as comfortable as some other cars, but it's the best offroader out there, and the looks you get for driving this car... It really stands out on the road! I use it to go snowboarding, and it's a perfect car for that sort of stuff.
I'm sorry, but there is a lot of B.S. said about the G-class here... Had a chance to have a go for couple of weeks in the 1993 model and even then it didn't have heavy steering or was hard to move around. Yes, it is a big car, but a very easy one to drive aroud and after have a day behind the steering wheel you even start to doubt is it really that big or just look like that. Why people like it? Can't say I know exactly, but I think a lot of it is because how reliable it is. And really comfortable. No need to judge just because it is hard to afford one :)
I have driven the G63 amg, it feels very much like a supercharged tractor. Despite of excellent offroading and towing capabilities, it's actually bad driving on the road. It doesn't turn really, on small winding roads you often end up in the wrong direction, on the motorway about 120km/h it has problems to hold it's lane over bent as well, it has a turning radiation of maybe 18 meters (thinking when you park it in a underground parking lot). It really sucks in usual stuff, however, people buy it for its unique look and sense of security, it's still a cool car, just not practicle.
Well done for the 200k guys ! Keep coming the good detailed reviews :) Would it be possible for you to review a Ford Focus 1.6 Ecoboost 182 ? Or if you can soon the 2015 model with the 1.5 Ecoboost 180 engine. Can't find that much detailed review about this specific model on UA-cam yet. Cheers !
I love the brashness of the G-class! I love the heavy doors and the gunlike locking sound. I have actually driven an old G-class offroad and I loved it! Great traction, great gearbox. It just drives. Snow, mud, holes, rocks... the G-class soldiers on! Tho I doubt the G-class makes a good daily driver. XD And then take a look at the G65... You ask yourself "why". Well, just because Mercedes can!
god the thing is i love the look of it, i really want one but i want it to look rugged and tough but be supper comfortable and luxurious inside. in other words give me the looks of the old days but the tec of now
A three way lockable differential, now there is an interesting idea. Not sure what it would used for, but I know this doesn't have one. On the other hand, it does have three differentials, all of which can be locked
The G-class' stats refinement luxury styling driving dynamics compared to the range rover definatly aren't as good but there is just something about it that you would have it every day of the week over a range rover, it's crazy.
No. People just don't get how expensive this car is. If it was cheaper by not trying to luxurious, it's one of the best off-roader in the world. But it's positioned in the luxury toy segment which is why people who look for luxury would rather have an actually luxurious car.
Yes its maybe a problem, because people who would use this car for its original purpose usually cant afford it. But its not an issue if people who are looking for a luxurious car and can afford a luxurious car rather buy a Porsche Cayenne or Audi Q7 or the new Maserati Levante which is ugly as hell in my opinion. All in all, lets leave this car for wealthy worldcrossers. Unfortunately im not one of them:D
this might sound like a stupid question but is the mud an actual optional extra? i would usually take that kind of thing as a joke but mercedes is the kind of company that would actually include that feature of an optional extra.
Traingineer Well if you said to them "I'll pay you five grand extra to drive my car in a field before delivering it to me" they'd probably grant your request. But no designer mud is not in the extras list :)
if not the amg, i'd rather take the GL over this G class... cheaper,7 seater, more luxurious, more comfortable, better on road (since i wont take car with such high price tag for offroad)
I will recall vehicles that have circular head lights. Land rover defender, most older Porsche vehicles, fiat 500, jeep wrangler, patriot and renegade, mini vehicles and that's about it
The only good point is how huge the boot is. Now we can move on to the negatives. Negatives: Boot is a pain to open in tight spaces with the spare wheel making it very very heavy. Getting inside is very hard. You have to leap up to get in. You’ll be better off in a GLC, ML, S, or GLA. Lemmy: Why am I driving the G? Yooka: Yooka drive Citroën C3! Laylee: You just spoke all weird, Yooka. Also Laylee: (clears throat) Yooka: (says nothing) Also Yooka: Hold on, Laylee, there are more bad points. #YookaLaylee

I would love to take this off roading!
strangely I want this car badly
Everyone wants it, the G Class is more of a status symbol today
As an Austrian, i am very proud that this car is build in my country
Oh please ffs
You must also be proud of Hitler and the bearded woman.
Just kidding. It's actually a fairly interesting fact :)
My dad is a Manager At Magna Steyr :)
der Mixxer I'm assuming that's the company that builds the G?
Firemarioflower I'm clearly joking about Hitler and the bearded woman. So much, in fact, that I actually said I was joking and then complimenting him on his comment, which was actually genuinely interesting.
Oh, and for the record, I actually like this car, although I'd never buy one.
a love this car, it's from an era in wich mercedes were on the top of their game. i've seen one a few days ago and i wathced beneth it, the ammount of thick heavy steel is impressive, this was made to last. i hope one day i can afford one
Funniest Carbuyer review ever. 1st time ever they've done a negative review lol
not sure it was negative, he did say he liked it .-)
Verliebt Mostly negative. On the site it's only 1 star though lol
Finally! The G Class Review!
I don't thing I've ever seen a regular G-class. Every G-class you see here in Dubai is an AMG.
whats the speed limit on a highway & regular road in Dubai?
imp alor The speed limit on most highways is 120 km/hr but you won't be fined until you exceed 140 km/hr.
wow, thats nearly 90mph. so im assuming everyone just goes 140km/h right since u wont be fined?
imp alor Surprisingly, not everyone does because there are a few idiots on the road who do speeds of 80 to 110 km/hr on the faster lanes and slow down the high speed traffic. PS: It's 87mph.
yea, 87mph. still faster then any road here in the states.
I am in the DK military and often drive a 25 year old version of this car. It is definately not designed for roads, but NOTHING beats it off-road. You Don't have to generalise. Not all British car reviewers are exactly the Same..
It's a review not a tribute
I like matts review he's critical of car and highlights the good and the bad, most car reviews only talk about the good stuff cus their to scared to say something and upset the manufacture

It's more likely to be on normal roads not going to be off road everyday so he didn't miss the point of the car

People love this car way too much in RUSSIA
My God I love it
I got lucky and had short drive on G55 few years ago and with all the negatives this is stunning machine! Getting in and you feel like you can go over a incoming truck without even scratch the paint or survive nuclear war!
May be it is not so sophisticated but it is really trilling!
You can tell that he watches Top Gear
My father owns a G63 2013 model and is very pleased with it!
you know why it's more expensive than the range rover? because during the production of the G class, range rover went bankrupt how many times? 4-5?
By far the funniest carbuyer video ever!!
...Truth! Bless you Matt. I just got mine in white. Love love love it!
I just bought one. It is insane, I don't have any use for it. It is outdated in every way. Every time I see it I smile and await an experience of driving it. the defender costs a 3rd of the price of a g-class. you can't compare the 2.
Best review ever, we need this banter..Thanks pal
😂 Mat before carwow 😂😂
I'm surprised nobody is talking about how stupid the mud option is.
Well, it seem that they all got the joke
I though it was a real option.. dw
Wtf? It was a joke?
Last time I saw rond headlights ? Well... this morning on a 991 turbo s !
thats not really round.. more oval. Bentley Mulsanne, however, has completely round headlights!!
Torrey B yes its True !
benben benxd Are you really what round is, I thought it was anything with circular features and oval has circular like features.
Torrey B ...But round headlights in a square socket?
mini and 3 series bmw
This is a great car. My dad has one and I have driven it quite a lot. Of course it is not the best car for tar roads, but on off road you won't get anything better. The car's off road capabilities is insane.

TheCargeek123 Indeed!
WORST

congratulation ti car buyer frim may 2014 2k subbies.
Well done Carbuyer! keep up the good reviews!
Someone has taken my mums table cloth off her washing line ! You have made a shirt out of it ! Fab Chanel

You must live in Bulgaria?
Yes Alex, between Sofia and London.
Interesting, I used to live in London, now Sofia.
Alexander Stefanov You Bulgarian? It's defo a Bulgarian surname.
it is, but alas, only 1/2!
I went to my local dealer the other day. This merc look tiny next to the 6x6 version. Im 6ft and my head up to wing mirror level. Loved it
I don't know what he's on about. It may be horrid to drive when it comes to turning, and it's not as comfortable as some other cars, but it's the best offroader out there, and the looks you get for driving this car... It really stands out on the road!

Oh my gosh thanks so much for doing this review
My favourite car
What a stylish, fast car! Wish I had $135K! I buy it!
Great review.
Thanks Mat!
The guy's great. I love watching Carbuyer reviews.
Well done for the 200k guys ! Keep coming the good detailed reviews :)
Would it be possible for you to review a Ford Focus 1.6 Ecoboost 182 ? Or if you can soon the 2015 model with the 1.5 Ecoboost 180 engine. Can't find that much detailed review about this specific model on UA-cam yet.
Cheers !
best thing about it, its not an suv its a proper 4x4 vehicle with some luxury bits bolted to it
I love the brashness of the G-class! I love the heavy doors and the gunlike locking sound. I have actually driven an old G-class offroad and I loved it! Great traction, great gearbox. It just drives. Snow, mud, holes, rocks... the G-class soldiers on!

You should've done the G 63 Matt! Thanks for a good review as ever.
One of the two coolest cars in the world
YAY YOU FINALLY DID A G class
god the thing is i love the look of it, i really want one but i want it to look rugged and tough but be supper comfortable and luxurious inside. in other words give me the looks of the old days but the tec of now
Why didn't Carbuyer review the Mercedes GLK? Is it not sold in the UK?
Manliest car ever PERIOD.
Kylie Jenner has one a teenage girl
Every person I've seen driving this is a girl...
close but the lm002 has it beat lambo power
lol come to Beverly hills, like all the girls drive this car
eliottkid123 jerk.
I love this review because all the faults you list are the things we love about it. Except the mpg.
loved this sincere review, it isn't practical, neither cheap, but it has something nice... maybe the badge? the retro style? idk...
Ha ha great report. Laughed my head off. The G63 is currently THE coolest car in Nigeria.
Can't you put the links to the reviews you talked about in the end of the video in the discription for the people who are watching from a gadget?!
Round headlamps on a car? hmm let me think, MINI? Porsche...?
...Land Rover Defender...
All Bentleys....
Bentley Mulsanne... Which needs to be reviewed BADLY
My grandpa's car also have round headlamp
Bentley..
KING OF THE ROAD! PERIOD
G63 is something Special
It's old school and I love it.
This car is a legend! :D
Do a review for Mercedes CL class.
Great review
A three way lockable differential, now there is an interesting idea. Not sure what it would used for, but I know this doesn't have one. On the other hand, it does have three differentials, all of which can be locked
looks better in real life than on this footage.😋. who will not want one of such, that's for free though 😄
It’s not a “3 way lockable differential’. It’s 3 separate differentials. Learn the car before commenting.
The G class is just pure awesome...
the G-Wagon is undoubtedly the 2nd SUV I would buy in the form of a G63 AMG after the Toyota Land Cruiser V8 (my 1st and foremost choice).
Practicality beautifully mixed with Power
The G-class' stats refinement luxury styling driving dynamics compared to the range rover definatly aren't as good but there is just something about it that you would have it every day of the week over a range rover, it's crazy.
Would I buy the current model or should wait for the new 2018 ?
Such an iconic car. LOVE IT
Designer Mud Upgrade?!!!! Popped an artery laughing at that
round headlamp ? porsche 911 LOL
Not quite round - more oval!
Carbuyer
+Carbuyer jeep wrangler????
Bently ?? lol they have 4 of em'
+Carbuyer Bentley continental
brilliant car, always been and always will be.
It's reliable and in production for decades.
Love that car so much!
please dont make g-wagon a laughing stock its one of the most powerful cars in mercedes! remember the saying "old is gold"
"the last brand new car to have circular headlights" the Land Rover Defender springs to mind
Saw Professor Green rolling in one of these in Lewisham last week. Nuff said.
Its clear that they don't get the point what this car made for.
Postman Pat always springs to mind when I see a G wagon
My favorite Mercedes.
this might sound like a stupid question but is the mud an actual optional extra?
i would usually take that kind of thing as a joke but mercedes is the kind of company that would actually include that feature of an optional extra.
Traingineer
Well if you said to them "I'll pay you five grand extra to drive my car in a field before delivering it to me" they'd probably grant your request. But no designer mud is not in the extras list :)
i dont really car that its awful to drive. its just badass
I see new Jeremy Clarkson here.
Last time i saw round headlamps on a new car was on the Skoda Yeti!
Does it have a camera in it??
Okay, what are the 6 wheel drive MB? That needs to be
ReFitted, IMHO.( on a wider, longer frame, & similar body style )
Why is the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car?
Coolest review ever
if not the amg, i'd rather take the GL over this G class... cheaper,7 seater, more luxurious, more comfortable, better on road (since i wont take car with such high price tag for offroad)
Please review Honda Freed. I'm planning to get that car but some of my friends said it's an old car. Please review it regardless! Thank you
I last saw round headlights on the brand new mini
I will recall vehicles that have circular head lights. Land rover defender, most older Porsche vehicles, fiat 500, jeep wrangler, patriot and renegade, mini vehicles and that's about it
The last time I saw an suv with round headlights? 2 hours ago of a
fj cruiser
Please do a review on the Jeep Wrangler.
Please review the Nissan pathfinder hybrid 2014
if i had the money, i'd buy it in a heartbeat
The only good point is how huge the boot is.
Now we can move on to the negatives.
Negatives:
Boot is a pain to open in tight spaces with the spare wheel making it very very heavy.
