      Fun Fact if you do some digging there's a 3D walkthrough of the cave from.. I feel like the early to mid 2010's, Obviously the cave has DRASTICALLY changed over Adam's time working over on his own channel Tested, many projects we see him complete on Tested become aspects of the Cave's background cacophony and old friends are sometimes put away to make way for others but even the old 3D walkthrough is a fascinating dip into both Adam's mind, and also a wonderful look at some very amazing things.
      I end this by also telling you if you haven't to PLEASE go listen or read Adam's book Every Tool is a Hammer, it's a wonderful read and really helps you grasp who Adam is and better explains his shop/cave than anything else.

    I just want to make a small correction to Adam’s explanation of how the Curta got started: Curt Herzstark did not come up with the idea of the Curta while in a concentration camp. He was encouraged to work on the device after being imprisoned in 1943, but the idea of a miniaturized calculator had been present for him since at least 1938, when he filed a patent for what would become the Curta’s stepped drum mechanism. The Nazis were aware of the idea, hence why they gave him preferential treatment in a place where he was supposed to die.

    • @Dave_Sisson
      @Dave_Sisson 2 роки тому +5

      Didn't navies in the Second World War (at least the British and Americans) have big mechanical range finding computers on their battleships that made the complex calculations necessary for them to land their shells accurately on opponents? To me, it looks like the Curta is just a cut down and simplified one of those... or am I missing something important about the Curta?

    • @blindleader42
      @blindleader42 2 роки тому +16

      @@Dave_Sisson You're thinking of gun directors, which were in no way similar to mechanical _digital_ calculators such as the Curta. In WWII, they were large (in the case of shipboard fire control) electro-mechanical _analog_ computers that worked out firing solutions in real time. Even anti-aircraft and field artillery had smaller, simpler analog gun directors in the war. The Curta is the mechanical equivalent of a four-banger. You can do addition, subtraction, multiplication (somewhat laboriously, but much easier than pencil and paper), and division (more laboriously yet, but still infinitely easier and faster than pencil and paper)

    • @Dave_Sisson
      @Dave_Sisson 2 роки тому +7

      @@blindleader42 Thanks for explaining that and clearing up my confusion. :)

      When Is started work in X-Ray in 1974 I worked on a generator made by Koch & Sterzel (Essen). The heart of the system was an analogue computer made of motors, cams, Bowden cable, microswitches, etc. I was told by an old timer that this was a development from the torpedo launch computer for U-boats. This is possible as it took in three inputs and produced an output in real time.

    I was fortunate to be left a Curta calculator when a friend died. He was a computer engineer and told me it the calculator was one of a number that had been issued to the engineers/designers of the UKs first atomic power station. Turning the handle is reminiscent of a fine old camera, just a gentle zzzt as the gears turn and the numbers register. My favourite calculator.

One tip for Adam if you will just take three objects from your cave of wonders and just make a video about them, you could have videos for the rest of your life and it's kind of like Jay Leno talking about his car collection.
