The Ritual is a movie and has a book! And one of the rare instances where I prefer the movie to the book. I think that would be a neat one! I loved the Ruins movie AND the novel. The novel was excellent, one of my favorite horror novels. It was incredibly agonizing to read and I love the way Scott was able to really bring across the bleak, dismal horror of the situations at hand. It made the plants feel much more eldritch horror-y. Love love loved it! Amy’s death was so depressing and horrifying that it still sits with me.
My one true complaint about the movie, is it felt like everything happens in a day and a half. The book on the other hand made me feel the length of time these victims were on that mound.
I think the book takes place over 2-3 days, which is still relatively short, but I agree. It feels so much longer in the book because we get more detail throughout each day.

I would recommend ‘let the right one in.’ I feel I have to warn you that this book features some very disturbing themes. ‘The books of blood’ by Clive Barker have had numerous screen adaptations, I mention these books so I can recommend a short story that’s not been made for a screen. In the hills, the cities.’ (From volume one) is one of the greatest short stories I have ever read! As a side note Stephen King read this short and said that Barker was the future of horror.

I kind of like how they explain his hunger for human flesh with a tragic backstory but the whole thing with the Japanese aunt or whatever she was to him felt out of context even in the series when they add her as a childhood friend felt off
The Exorcist! I’ve really appreciated and respected the movie for years but I read the book earlier this year and was surprised by how much I preferred and adored it; the characters are so likeable and while it sticks to the story in the movie it delves deeper in all the parts you’d want it to and gives context. The audiobook is read by the author and I couldn’t recommend it enough!
I absolutely loved the Exorcist. I've read the audio book several times and let's just say the exorcism scenes are really intense; more so than the movie in some cases. Love the movie too.
I love this content ! I read the ruins a long time ago and forgot how bleak it was. I liked the book a bit better, but now going to rewatch the movie after hearing that it was written by the author. Happy Friday the 13th!
Laura Ramsey performance as Stacy was incredible she really made you feel for her was so uncomfortable to watch when she was cutting flesh off her body . Need to give the book a read .

I just finished watching the movie for the first time after stumbling across clips on YT. People in the comments praised it and after seeing it, I agree with them. It’s interesting from start to finish, I care just enough about each character that I’m invested and hoping they succeed even though it’s pretty obvious they won’t. It had everything I want from a good tension building, body horror, tragedy - if I can call it that. I was emotionally drained at times from the scenes, so I can’t imagine what the book is like. I’m really curious now though because you didn’t exactly say who died at the end of the book or how…you just teased how gruesome it was and damn, I kinda wanna find out for myself! Excellent review!
I love the changes in the movie, though usually I like a film to stick to the book as much as possible - we agree. Yet, The author being the script writer makes this idea void in this case, of course and I really like how Scott Smith used this opportunity. Brilliantly. In the book there's a scene when the group is sitting around the top of the mound and trying to keep the ghost alive in each other, having a fantasy talked thru about gettin' home and bein' famous. In that conversation they lament about who'd play who if their story were to be made into a film. As they analyze the world of films, they conclude that changes would be made and some changes they speak about are implied, hinted at or made it into the flick. I always thought it's a 2-in-1 deal with this tale. Really enjoy art like this. Similar to the twin books of Stephen King [ Desperation & The Regulators ] which I also respected for the unusual style of having a basic tale or characters which with the author spins two different tales of. And The Ruins is simply is what it is. A well written, really dark tale that gets ever darker toward the end... I reread it few times, watched it [too]many times but the story doesn't seem to lose that particular dread, that "damp smell" my brain kinda links it to. I think that guy - Ryan Hollinger - on the other youtube channel has one of the best observations about one of the sly secrets of The Ruins; as he puts it: "Things happen just as sudden as they do slowly and deliberately." I think this sums it up well. I think The Ruins indeed has to be spoken more about and should be read by all horror freaks & ghouls out there.

i liked the movie when i was younger, i never knew it was a book! but i read it in one sitting last night and i loved it. my favorite character was eric - i thought he was so brave and sweet and cute, and i think out of the four friends he suffered the most :(
The Chalk Man - is such an amazing book with great character development, left me guessing right till the end. They're meant to be making a 6 part series on it this year for the BBC.

Girl read Uzumaki please, it's amazing. Also when people ask my favorite horror movie I always say The Ruins. My aunt owned it on DVD and I believe I watched it when I was about 9 or 10. I'm yet to read the book.
I remember reading this book. I used to be a book reader when I worked in West Africa. I passed it to my friend after I finished it and I’m like…read or not. It’s a heavy read and you will struggle with it because you want to read more. But you just don’t feel good with how it’s going and you end up pass the book to somebody else because it’s good, but it’s one of those books. I forgot the whole story but remember the impact of that book and it was crazy because every night it would rain in the jungle and I was reading this book. I ended up of course with True Blood books and Reacher stuff. But this one book.

watching this after finishing the ruins (the movie) and all i gotta say is in terms of the movie stacy’s ending and how the vines & paranoia & the situation got to her is just simply heartbreaking to me and i felt so sorry for her and eric as well and the ending he got. i cried tbh when they got their ending it was so disturbing and heartbreaking 😩 i will say i LOVE this movie so much it’s disturbing and gruesome i am OBSESSED 😩

You are the first person referring to this film. The story seemed interesting so I watched it, it has suspense, tension, is dark and works as a horror film and while I'm not crazy about it, it was good to watch for once. I didn't knew it was a book but why they switched the deaths and put the girl who dies in it to be the only survivor? 🤔 Ok changes can be made in book adaptations (the Mayan temple instead of the hill) but when changes violate the original material is a very negative element.

I love this book. I read it in High School and I'm so glad I did. I like the movie, too! It was interesting the changes they made. How about you do A Simple Plan? It's also written by Scott Smith!
I've had the book for awhile, several years now but was waiting for the right moment to sit down and read it, pretty much dedicated two whole days and finished it. I could not put it down. I also had seen the movie first and really enjoyed it, felt a few things were off pace etc but it is one of those fantastic, dread-filled, hopeless movies. And I agree that bits really well adapted and really well acted. That's said, unsurprising, the book I feel is far better than the movie and does a REALLY great job at just making you not only feel hopeless about the story & situation, but how you go back and forth between feeling sorry for the characters their struggle and hopelessness...but on the flipside how tou want to just slap them for their stupid decisions at times. Which to me signifies how well written and paced the book is. While having seen the movie "spoiled" a few big surprises that reading the book would've been absolutely a shock, I was still glued to each page. I feel we don't get enough of this Horror, this sheer, overwhelming force of evil and hopelessness and being stranded. Horror monsters Ike the Vines, The Blob for 1988's Blob Remake, The Thing from John Carpenter's remake of The Thing, The Pods from Invasion of the Body Snatchers and a few other Horror properties where you feel you can't win and all is lost...when you sit and marinate in such topics and situations, its absolutely dreadful....and makes for great Horror movies and Horror Books. I will say that the biggest disappointment and misstep of the Movie adaptation is how they ruined both Pablo and Mathias characters. they pretty much erased Mathias entirely outside of being German and looking for his brother. He was such a great support and anchor for the story and characters and a great balance for Jeff's character and aiding him, plus how he wa sin a way, the most reasonable and level-headed character and added that almost fitting role for many readers. Plus not having Pablo be this excruciatingly tragic and tormented character who you think will die at the next turn on the page, who has some of thee most horrific descriptions for his wounds and slow death...add in how he can't communicate properly or be understood by everyone else.. that as really missing from the movie. I agree that the ending in the movie pales in comparison to the book, SPOILERS that nobody makes it alive snd even Stacy's suicide and final moments are take from cruelly by the Vines dragging her away and feasting on her before she even dies...and then scintillating ending of the last two Greeks and their newfound friends arriving a few days later and doodling themselves to step upon the Ruins themselves in a "Oh hell, here we go again" is just perfect for me and I feel they, if anything, should've stuck with that ending instead of the two more Hollywood ending of the Final Girl escaping...even if on version had her infected.
This is an old one but “ A Simple Plan” is a book and movie I both read and watched. The movie was really good… It’s from the 90’s and also by Scott Smith.
It's one of the few that I like the movie more than the book. The visual of the vines moving like snakes is pretty awesome. In the book The plant is fully satient and messes with them just for fun. So the movie is a little more down to earth.
House of leaves is an amazing book! I wonder if they’ll ever make a film on the Navidson records. I feel like it would be good cause its a pretty new concept in my opinion!
I keep hearing how great House of Leaves is, and I just did not feel that way once I read it. I wonder how much of the disorienting effect was lost because I read it as an ebook.
@@royaldiggy That's what I gathered after I *begrudgingly* finished it, then read other people's take on it on reddit. I liked the general story and felt like there must be something there with the narrator that I missed because of the format. I read the whole book though, so it at least wasn't so bad that I just gave up
An underrated read is absolutely "Phantoms" by King's rival, Dean Koontz. I am not an easy person to scare, but this book unnerved me so fucking much the first time I read it many many years ago, and it is without a doubt my most reread book, ever. And it even has an adaptation, from 1998. And oh my god, it is such a dreadful movie. What I wouldn't give for a new adaptation. Done by Mike Flanagan, of course.
O I would love to see a comparison of The Exorcist! I love the book and the movie. But must admit i find the book even scarier. And I do recommend the audiobook where w. Peter Blatty himself narrates . His voice is too perfect!
Honestly, I’d love to hear your take on Uzumaki! There is a live action j-horror version, but you could also wait until the new animated series comes out next year, if you preferred.

The Troop messed me up so much because of the extreme body horror in that (as well as the animal abuse I had to skip over those parts)!! I just finished reading The Ruins but I prefer The Troop to The Ruins but know people who feel the exact opposite! I really enjoyed hearing all of your thoughts! Compared to the Manga, Uzumaki was kind of good, they added a little comedy, but the special effects were actually really good. It's worth a watch either way, I kind of wish Ito had more of his Manga turned into movies, Del Toro would be the perfect director for them!

I'd love to see someone try to adapt "The Call" by Peadar O'guilin. I know the description calls this book juvenile fiction but the sheer amount of body horror and disturbing imagery that this book has left me with adult levels of existential dread. If you want a good Irish horror I cannot recommend "The Call" enough.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Junji Ito I would die for him, so I really recommend his work!!!, Uzumaki is the best for me, but Gyo and the Junji Ito Collection has amazing stories!
my wife got me into big brother about 14 years ago. we watched until last season. once they started to allow racism we could no longer support it. when someone is sat down and told "sorry, we can not keep you here because you do not match the skin color of the people who need to win" i can not agree with that. the woman even replied with "i understand, you should do what you have to do". even on the exit interview she is asked about it and she seems totally fine with it happening....julie chen even goes on to celebrate it. going as far as saying something like "we need to teach this in school". no person should ever be excluded from anything just because of how they were born. it made me very sad and angry. a lot of people who tried to talk about it the next day had their youtube channels flagged and were met with threats of removal.

My favorite horror writer is Anne Rice, which means “Interview with the Vampire “ the only good movie adaptation. It’s an old one but I don’t know if you have ever done a review of the movie. She is definitely a gothic writer and I think most critics would agree she is the best. “The Witching Hour” is her Magnum Opus in my opinion. Probably the best book I’ve ever read. It is Historical as most of her books… which she obviously does extensive background research and weaves her fictional stories in such a way to make them seem real. If you’ve never read Anne Rice you’re really missing something. I’d love to know your opinion.
Coming back to this vid after finally reading/watching it! I definitely prefer the book - it’s one of my new all time favorites! *spoilers!!!* I think a lot of the choices they made in switching the deaths was to make more tension/emotional situations since we didn’t get as much character development in the movie, so they had the couples in situations like that together. So they had Stacy kill Eric instead of Eric killing Matthias because it’s more dramatic/sad for a girlfriend to kill her boyfriend , and they had the emotional moment at the end when Jeff saves Amy and lets her escape instead of them both just dying separately.
I suggest The Lost Village by Camilla Sten. I knew I had to read this book when I saw it described as "The Blair Witch Project meets Midsommar." Yes, please!

Some versions of the myth say Tlaltecuhtli would not stop crying and bear fruit (plants and other growing things) unless she was moistened with the blood of men. Skip hannibal rising in both book and movies, obviously up to you but I wish I'd never acknowledged them and left it as a trilogy

When I read the book, I pictured Eric as Matthew Lillard so hard my brain was unable to process anyone else playing him.
i liked the movie when i was younger, i never knew it was a book! but i read it in one sitting last night and i loved it. my favorite character was eric - i thought he was so brave and sweet and cute, and i think out of the four friends he suffered the most :(
The Chalk Man - is such an amazing book with great character development, left me guessing right till the end. They're meant to be making a 6 part series on it this year for the BBC.

Also when people ask my favorite horror movie I always say The Ruins. My aunt owned it on DVD and I believe I watched it when I was about 9 or 10. I'm yet to read the book.
I remember reading this book. I used to be a book reader when I worked in West Africa. I passed it to my friend after I finished it and I’m like…read or not. It’s a heavy read and you will struggle with it because you want to read more. But you just don’t feel good with how it’s going and you end up pass the book to somebody else because it’s good, but it’s one of those books. I forgot the whole story but remember the impact of that book and it was crazy because every night it would rain in the jungle and I was reading this book. I ended up of course with True Blood books and Reacher stuff. But this one book.
Ooh I would be interested in your opinion on The Road book and movie! While entirely different in plot, I feel The Road gives very similar vibes to the hoplessness of a situation!

watching this after finishing the ruins (the movie) and all i gotta say is in terms of the movie stacy’s ending and how the vines & paranoia & the situation got to her is just simply heartbreaking to me and i felt so sorry for her and eric as well and the ending he got. i cried tbh when they got their ending it was so disturbing and heartbreaking 😩 i will say i LOVE this movie so much it’s disturbing and gruesome i am OBSESSED 😩

You are the first person referring to this film. The story seemed interesting so I watched it, it has suspense, tension, is dark and works as a horror film and while I'm not crazy about it, it was good to watch for once. I didn't knew it was a book but why they switched the deaths and put the girl who dies in it to be the only survivor? 🤔 Ok changes can be made in book adaptations (the Mayan temple instead of the hill) but when changes violate the original material is a very negative element.

Bram Stoker's Dracula Vs Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) movie
I've had the book for awhile, several years now but was waiting for the right moment to sit down and read it, pretty much dedicated two whole days and finished it. I could not put it down. I also had seen the movie first and really enjoyed it, felt a few things were off pace etc but it is one of those fantastic, dread-filled, hopeless movies. And I agree that bits really well adapted and really well acted.
That's said, unsurprising, the book I feel is far better than the movie and does a REALLY great job at just making you not only feel hopeless about the story & situation, but how you go back and forth between feeling sorry for the characters their struggle and hopelessness...but on the flipside how tou want to just slap them for their stupid decisions at times. Which to me signifies how well written and paced the book is. While having seen the movie "spoiled" a few big surprises that reading the book would've been absolutely a shock, I was still glued to each page.
I feel we don't get enough of this Horror, this sheer, overwhelming force of evil and hopelessness and being stranded. Horror monsters Ike the Vines, The Blob for 1988's Blob Remake, The Thing from John Carpenter's remake of The Thing, The Pods from Invasion of the Body Snatchers and a few other Horror properties where you feel you can't win and all is lost...when you sit and marinate in such topics and situations, its absolutely dreadful....and makes for great Horror movies and Horror Books.
I will say that the biggest disappointment and misstep of the Movie adaptation is how they ruined both Pablo and Mathias characters. they pretty much erased Mathias entirely outside of being German and looking for his brother. He was such a great support and anchor for the story and characters and a great balance for Jeff's character and aiding him, plus how he wa sin a way, the most reasonable and level-headed character and added that almost fitting role for many readers. Plus not having Pablo be this excruciatingly tragic and tormented character who you think will die at the next turn on the page, who has some of thee most horrific descriptions for his wounds and slow death...add in how he can't communicate properly or be understood by everyone else.. that as really missing from the movie. I agree that the ending in the movie pales in comparison to the book, SPOILERS that nobody makes it alive snd even Stacy's suicide and final moments are take from cruelly by the Vines dragging her away and feasting on her before she even dies...and then scintillating ending of the last two Greeks and their newfound friends arriving a few days later and doodling themselves to step upon the Ruins themselves in a "Oh hell, here we go again" is just perfect for me and I feel they, if anything, should've stuck with that ending instead of the two more Hollywood ending of the Final Girl escaping...even if on version had her infected.

This is an old one but “ A Simple Plan” is a book and movie I both read and watched. The movie was really good… It’s from the 90’s and also by Scott Smith.

It's one of the few that I like the movie more than the book. The visual of the vines moving like snakes is pretty awesome. In the book The plant is fully satient and messes with them just for fun. So the movie is a little more down to earth.

I keep hearing how great House of Leaves is, and I just did not feel that way once I read it. I wonder how much of the disorienting effect was lost because I read it as an ebook.

I liked the general story and felt like there must be something there with the narrator that I missed because of the format. I read the whole book though, so it at least wasn't so bad that I just gave up

An underrated read is absolutely "Phantoms" by King's rival, Dean Koontz.
I am not an easy person to scare, but this book unnerved me so fucking much the first time I read it many many years ago, and it is without a doubt my most reread book, ever.
And it even has an adaptation, from 1998.
And oh my god, it is such a dreadful movie.
What I wouldn't give for a new adaptation. Done by Mike Flanagan, of course.

The Troop messed me up so much because of the extreme body horror in that (as well as the animal abuse I had to skip over those parts)!! I just finished reading The Ruins but I prefer The Troop to The Ruins but know people who feel the exact opposite! I really enjoyed hearing all of your thoughts! I agree that the book is not too gratuitous.

Compared to the Manga, Uzumaki was kind of good, they added a little comedy, but the special effects were actually really good. It's worth a watch either way, I kind of wish Ito had more of his Manga turned into movies, Del Toro would be the perfect director for them!

I'd love to see someone try to adapt "The Call" by Peadar O'guilin. I know the description calls this book juvenile fiction but the sheer amount of body horror and disturbing imagery that this book has left me with adult levels of existential dread. If you want a good Irish horror I cannot recommend "The Call" enough.

my wife got me into big brother about 14 years ago.
we watched until last season. once they started to allow racism we could no longer support it. when someone is sat down and told "sorry, we can not keep you here because you do not match the skin color of the people who need to win" i can not agree with that. the woman even replied with "i understand, you should do what you have to do".
even on the exit interview she is asked about it and she seems totally fine with it happening....julie chen even goes on to celebrate it. going as far as saying something like "we need to teach this in school".
no person should ever be excluded from anything just because of how they were born. it made me very sad and angry. a lot of people who tried to talk about it the next day had their youtube channels flagged and were met with threats of removal.
I love the idea for this series, I cant wait to see your next comparison.

My favorite horror writer is Anne Rice, which means “Interview with the Vampire “ the only good movie adaptation. It’s an old one but I don’t know if you have ever done a review of the movie. She is definitely a gothic writer and I think most critics would agree she is the best. “The Witching Hour” is her Magnum Opus in my opinion. Probably the best book I’ve ever read. It is Historical as most of her books… which she obviously does extensive background research and weaves her fictional stories in such a way to make them seem real. If you’ve never read Anne Rice you’re really missing something. I’d love to know your opinion.

I think a lot of the choices they made in switching the deaths was to make more tension/emotional situations since we didn’t get as much character development in the movie, so they had the couples in situations like that together. So they had Stacy kill Eric instead of Eric killing Matthias because it’s more dramatic/sad for a girlfriend to kill her boyfriend , and they had the emotional moment at the end when Jeff saves Amy and lets her escape instead of them both just dying separately.
I suggest The Lost Village by Camilla Sten. I knew I had to read this book when I saw it described as "The Blair Witch Project meets Midsommar." Yes, please!

I always felt it was cosmic horror. The vines are a material manifestation of Tlaltecuhtli (pronounced Tlal-teh-koo-tlee and sometimes spelled Tlaltecutli) is the name of the monstrous earth god among the Aztec. "The one who gives and devours life." She represents the earth and the sky, and was one of the gods in the Aztec pantheon most hungry for human sacrifice.
One piece of Tlaltecuhtli's body became the earth, mountains, and rivers, her hair the trees and flowers, her eyes the caves and wells. The other piece became the vault of the sky, although, in this early time, no sun or stars were embedded in it yet. Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca gave Tlatecuhtli the gift of providing humans with whatever they needed from her body, but it was a gift that didn't make her happy Thus in Mexica mythology, Tlaltecuhtli represents the surface of the earth; however, she was said to be angry, and she was the first of the gods to demand the hearts and blood of humans for her unwilling sacrifice. Some versions of the myth say Tlaltecuhtli would not stop crying and bear fruit (plants and other growing things) unless she was moistened with the blood of men.
